Wet formed leather pouches.

A couple of guys asked how I wet formed the pouches I used on the Altoids Tin /SAK Pancake I made recently. So here's my attempt at a photo step by step. As I'm still learning I hope themore experienced leather workers will add more info and correct where I've goneastray.

First off make a former to shape the leather over. I use scraps of wood cut tothe shape of what's to be carried. ( firesteel in this case )

It's important to round the corners so that the leather can smoothly follow theshape i.e no sharp corners or 90 degrees.Once you've got your former made and before it's fixed to a base, use it to markout a hole in the board used to squeeze the leather around the former.I used a bit of ply here , leave a gap for the leather +.

I use an off cut of the same thickness to work out how much leather to cut,saves waste. Now soak the leather you've cut out in hand hot water until it becomes soft andpliable, usually about five minutes or so.

Place the wet leather over the former and gently work to shape with you'refingers then place the board with the cut out over and slowly clamp in place.

Leave to dry and then shape edges as required.

I used veg tanned shoulder leather here ,around 3mm thick. Thinner leather would probably be easier to work with but there's no need to runout and buy expensive leather if you just want to give leather work a try as somerecycled leather works out OK too. Keep an eye out in the thrift shops for oldbags etc .

This pancake for a firesteel and sharpening stone was made totally from variousbits of recycled leather.
