Make a fashion statement The Apparel Merchandising & Management Program prepares students for leadership roles in what is a major global business sector. The apparel business is a large and dynamic component of the U.S. economy. In addition to apparel manufacturing, trading and retailing activities, it embraces many specialist supporting sectors, including the media, logistics, business consulting, textiles and equipment manufacturing. Southern California is home to a vibrant apparel sector, the largest in the nation. The area contains many top apparel brands and retail groups with Los Angeles at the hub being a leading international fashion center. The area is also an incubator for dynamic new apparel businesses based on the California lifestyle. The B.S. degree in Apparel Merchandising & Management provides a comprehensive education in all aspects of the apparel business from market research and forecasting, through product development, manufacturing, sourcing and supply chain management, retail buying, merchandising, store management and brand marketing. Two program options provide an opportunity to develop advanced knowledge of either apparel production or fashion retailing aspects of the business. A Fashion Merchandising Minor is also available to students who seek additional study in the fashion industry as a complement to their major. Why Apparel Merchandising & Management?

A Comprehensive Program: The Apparel Merchandising and Management degree is unique. It provides comprehensive coverage of the apparel business from market research and forecasting through design, production, and distribution to consumer marketing and customer service.

Interdisciplinary Approach for Leadership Careers: Our curriculum utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to provide students with the intellectual capabilities and specialized knowledge to be effective leaders in their chosen apparel field. An array of support courses from the College of Business provide students with a solid foundation in business and management concepts. These are fused with the creative, scientific, and business disciplines specific to the apparel and retail sectors. The combination provides a rigorous and challenging program that has achieved local, national and international recognition for its excellence.

Hands-On Experience: From concept to consumer, students are responsible for running the AM2 apparel production and ApparelScapes fashion retailing micro-businesses where students design, produce and market merchandise ranges in stores on campus and through their own ecommerce site. Students also have the opportunity to participate in student exchange, study abroad programs and yearly study trips to Europe and New York.

Interface With Industry: The AMM program is closely linked to apparel production, retail and related businesses through our Industry Advisory Board. They support the program in many ways, including scholarships, speakers, internships and support for keeping our curriculum ahead of the latest business developments. Internships are required of all students. AMM students have interned with over 100 different companies, not only in Los Angeles but across the nation, and as far away as Asia and Europe. Students also get to take part in regular field trips, hear from a wide range of guest speakers and attend major industry events.

Career Placement: Our graduates are highly sought after by many major companies for their technical skills and their ability to think and act like managers. The AMM program provides support to kick-start your career through internship and career preparation courses, special career workshops, AMM Career Days/ Career Fairs, job placement assistance and referrals.

Facilities: The AMM program is housed within a unique 23,000 square foot facility with state of the art equipment that includes multiple computer labs, a testing lab, a large production lab and a retail showroom. Our computer labs are fully equipped with the latest industry-leading computer-aided design programs (CAD) for fashion design, patternmaking, marking and grading, as well as business software programs for apparel inventory management, retail buying, and store design.

Accreditation: AMM is one of only 13 schools to be accredited by the American Apparel & Footwear Association, the national association representing the U.S. apparel sector.

Our Faculty: The AMM faculty are active in professional organizations, participate in research, continuously interact with industry professionals and bring the very latest information to the classroom. Adjunct professors from the apparel industry teach specialized courses, assuring students of “real world” learning.

Our Students: Our students are drawn from a rich diversity of cultural backgrounds, reflecting southern Californian society. In addition, we attract many students from around the United States and from an array of international locations. Student organizations such as Phi Upsilon Omicron and the Apparel Merchandising & Management Association (AMMA) are very active and run a variety of events with professional networking and leadership development opportunities.

Scholarships: A range of scholarships are available through professional organizations, apparel companies and the University. The AMM departments itself awards over $10,000 of merit-based scholarships each year. Financial aid is also available to eligible students.

Great CareersThe apparel sector offers a diversity of exciting and challenging careers in areas such as design, product development, merchandising, international sourcing, supply chain management, retail buying, brand management, visual merchandising, store operations management, and fashion journalism. Opportunities abound with companies ranging from world famous brand names and mega retailers, to smaller and younger entrepreneurial businesses, in the apparel production, retail distribution, and related technology and service sectors. A number of our graduates have also gone on to earn master’s degrees in fields such as education and business administration.
