Typical Virtualised Datacenter demonstrating several Virtual hosts running virtual machines. Microsoft System Center provides a service level view of the environment managing virtual machines defined as a service.
Generally the Datacenter requirements will shrink during the evenings and weekends but most datacenters always operate at 100% capacity.
Each service can have a defined max and min number of virtual machines and it shrinks and grows dynamically based on the workload.
As new virtual machines are provisioned System Center uses a technology called placement to select the best host to provision the new system.
As the service performance requirements drop, so the number of virtual machines requires also drops and systems are removed dynamically
Multiple services can exist on the same underlying infrastructure and happily co-exist without any need for operator intervention
As we move into time periods where the requirements drop across the board (Such as a weekend) all services will shrink.
At a specific point the ability for dynamic consolidation will occur and System Center will migrate virtual machines and shut down the host.
As we move out of this quiet period, services will start to grow again and placement will deploy new virtual machines automatically.
When the existing Host capacity is exhausted System Center will dynamically bring offline servers back online to manage the load.
At some point it could be conceivable that the capacity of the entire datacenter could be exhausted with this model.
At this point a virtual machine could be created in an off-premise Private or Public cloud to create additional dynamic capacity.
Despite different components of the service residing in different Datacenters, System Center can still manage them as a single service
