WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

Chemical vs. Physical Changes

When a physical change occurs… it does NOT change what the substance is!

Physical Changes

It only changes the physical appearance.

Then, what does it change?

When you change the •state of matter

What are three examples of Physical Changes?

• shape• mixing/

dissolving

When a chemical change occurs… a brand new substance is formed!

So, what aboutChemical Changes??

For example, mixing vinegar with baking soda will react (and chemically change) to make a salt, water, and carbon dioxide gas!

If there is a change in theodor (was odorless, now it smells)

What are five examples of Chemical Changes?

Odor changes

If there is a change in thecolor (colorless, and now it is

bright yellow)

Another example of a chemical change is

Color Change

If there is a change in thetemperature (gets warm or

cold WITHOUT an outside source)

Actually any energy change

Another example of a chemical change is

Temperature Change

When a gas is produced… observe bubbling/ fizzing

Another example of a chemical change is

Forming Bubbles

When a solid forms after mixing 2 liquids… this is called a precipitate.

The last example of a chemical change is

Forming a solid
