For so much, what shall we repay?

Reminding parents, carers and students about the NSW Department of Education’s School Students Uniform Policy is very straightforward:

“Schools expect students to wear the uniform during school hours, while travelling to and from school, and when engaged in school activities out of school hours.”

But, is this the only reason we expect students to wear our school uniform? Is this a reason why we ask parents and carers to

provide a school uniform and give reminders about it being worn?

The answer is No!

Our school uniform is a reminder of the people who came before us. The people who served in a war and those who ensured a war memorial remembered them and provided future generations of school students with a place of education.

they display our school colours and the symbols of the community’s war memorial. Purple for remembrance, brown for the honour boards and gold for the lettering. The colours represent the community; it speaks of the men and women, young and old, and Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people from our community.

Our school uniform reminds everyone who comes to or lives in or is born in the community that the school honours the extraordinary commitment made by people who enlisted from Hay and served in the First World War.

In 1923 the community acknowledged those who served, those who had an adventure and those who lost their lives. They reminded

everyone about those who gave so much to others.

This act of remembrance has now been broadened to remember the people from the community who served in other wars and conflicts.

With an understanding or reminder of our school’s past, I thank parents and carers who ensure we honour those of the past. Your actions in providing the school uniform and reminders about its wearing demonstrate remembrance of the actions of our people.

Students take on the responsibility of wearing the school uniform every school day. Parents and carers already fulfil their part by the provision of the school uniform and the reminders about it being worn.

I remind the students that when we say, “For so much, what shall we repay?”, the wearing of the school uniform is one way to repay and acknowledge. Staying safe Students are encouraged to wash hands regularly with water and soap for 20 seconds. Hand sanitiser is available in each classroom as teachers have been given a pump bottle containing sanitiser.

I would like to acknowledge the amazing

work the students have done in adjusting to the physical distancing at the canteen. Students late to school Students who arrive to school late are to bring a note from a parent / carer stating the reason why they are late to the front office in the main building. Students lunch pass Students are very fortunate that we have maintained the lunch pass system on their return to school. The actions of several students who leave at lunch via the rear carpark or around the sides of the main building instead of the main office to sign out and back in are generating conversations about pausing the lunch pass system for a period of time.

During Phase 0 of the school operations last term and earlier this term we had a regular number of students who attended school and they did not use the lunch pass system. Over the coming weeks I will continue to reflect and discuss this occurrence.

I remind our school community the school has a P & C canteen which operates 5 days a week and provides a variety of food and drink. Therefore, there is no requirement for your child to leave at lunch. Students may also like to bring their own recess and lunch to school. All bottled water at the canteen is still free for students at recess and lunch. Upgrade and maintenance After nearly 10 weeks of a huge installation process we are on the verge of having our new heating and cooling system finalised to over twenty student learning spaces such as classrooms, the school library, etc. The system is extremely high tech and the rooms are to be set at an ambient temperature. I would like to thank CID Electrics in Hay, who were awarded the contract by the NSW Department of Education, for their outstanding service to the school and to the preservation of our main building. We also have had additional heating installed in the school museum and a regular split system installed in the staff common room for staff
