What would Dame Cicely do?
What I’ve learned
about charity comms…
from the founder of
hospice care
You matter because you are you
“You matter because you are you.
And you matter to the last moment
of your life”
Dame Cicely Saunders, 1918 – 2005
You matter because you are you
An ethos for telling stories and narratives
A way of valuing service users
Fully transferable across different causes
Love and steel
‘Love and steel, how
kind. Anyone doing
hospice work will
need plenty of both.’

Love and steel: in practice
‘Love and steel’ is what charity comms can and should
be – as innovative, cutting edge and professional as
the best in the PR industry, but also caring, human
and with our service users at the heart of absolutely
everything we do
Some days, you need both!
Seeing the whole person
A patient is more than symptoms to be controlled – needs
an integrated approach
In practice: integrated, holistic comms
No person is just their medical
condition, and no charity is either.
If you don’t have a holistic view of
your charity, you’ll only ever be
telling part of the story.
Multi-disciplinary approach to
every project
Beware of jargon
Real people, real lives, real engagement
Match4Lara
Little things matter
Keeping heritage alive
The real individuals who
started it all…
What I’ve learned from Cicely…
Every service user, and every interaction, matters
Go beyond describing the cause – tell the story in a
full, holistic, meaningful way
People – not patients
Integrated cross team working – with beneficiaries
at the heart
Quality of relationships and experiences with charity
Raid your archive – tell stories of founders, activism
Love (and steel) is all you need.
