TODAY’S PROGRAM…

GENESIS: Cross & Star of David Dick Benedek introduced speakers Rabbi Josh Whinston of Temple Beth Emeth and Christine Moody, who is a member of St. Clare of Assi-si Episcopal Church. They are both involved with Genesis, the 501c3 organization that owns the property located at 2309 Packard shared by the church and temple. A Cross and Star of David are side by side on the building. This may be the only building in the United States that was jointly designed and built by two different religions. The facility was com-

pleted and dedicated on September 11, 1994. Both the church and temple use the building for their own services. In addition they work together on Habitat for Humanity projects, a joint Thanksgiving service, pulpit switches and choir concerts. Their joint vision statement is as follows:

HOSPITALITY… Dave Hughes reported that Doug Hanton had fallen and broke a few ribs. He is in the hospital but expects to go home very soon. Former educator Bill Browning passed away. Jim Wheaton’s memorial service will be May 9th. Kathy Barden-Perlberg is the April Hospitality Chair.

ANNOUNCEMENTS...

The Kiwanis Spring Divisional will be held Saturday, April 7th from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m. at the Troy Community Center. Let Kathy Wilder know if you are interested in attending. The Kiwanis International Convention will begin June 28th in Las Vegas. Anyone interested should register by April 6th. The Kiwanis Michigan Division Convention will be held Sep-tember 6th through the 9th.

PRESENTATIONS...

We were honored to have Kiwanis Michigan District Governor Larry Memmer visiting our club. He presented Deb Jones with the Silver Level Award for her great efforts in sponsoring five new Kiwanis members and that she is on track for the president’s trophy.

Larry also commended the U of M Circle K Chap-ter. He thanked our chapter in advance for host-ing the August, 2019 convention, and said that a committee is being formed to help with the con-vention.

FINES...

Emily Allshouse was almost fined because she had shared Kiwanis Thrift Sale cus-tomers with other cashiers. President Hampton ruled that the motion failed, but then showed how to “pay it forward” by paying Emily’s next four fines. All members who have not kept a promise were fined. Dan Dever fined Jim Wolfington for punning without a license. New member Karol Chubb paid because of tradition.

HAPPY DOLLARS...

Bob Gray will be very happy if all Kiwanis thrift sale workers let him know when they can work during April, May and June.

Claire Dahl thanked Ken Hillenburg for his technical expertise in helping the Rosies.

Circle K'ers Melissa Zhou and Jill Davidson gave a joint contri-bution for the multitude of awards won by U of M Circle K at the District Convention including Outstanding President (Jill). Our club was cited as the Outstanding Sponsoring Organization for our sponsorship and other assistance.

Max Ziegler was appreciative of Circle K members help sorting our incoming sale merchandise.

Larry Dittmar had a proud dollar as his son is the audio producer of the Jesus Christ Superstar this Saturday on NBC. (There might also be a sporting event on T.V. this Saturday.)

Emily Allshouse contributed because of Jill Davidson’s Kiwanis Young professionals application and because she is or will be Aunt Emily x 2.

President Hampton announced that there will be no happy dollars on April 30th so plan accordingly.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES... Musical Events Chair Larry Dittmar said that there are lots of upcoming free recit-

The Ypsilanti Kiwanis Club’s annual pancake breakfast will be held at the Ypsilanti Methodist Church on Saturday, April 14th from 7:30 am until 1:00 pm. $8 for adults and $4 for kids.

There is one opening to be Max Ziegler’s golf partner at Brookside golf course. They tee off at 8:00 am so there’s plenty of time to play and then go to Kiwanis.

Fred Sanchez said it’s time to think spring and baseball. The annual Tiger trip is Saturday, August 11th against Minnesota. The cost is only $70 including, game, bus ride, lunch. Fred guarantees a Cracker Jack time.

CENTENNIAL MEMORY GEM... RICHARD E. (RIP) KINNEY joined the Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor in 1995 (23 years) following a stellar career as an educator and baseball coach at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School. Rip served as a club board member and on numerous committees including the voucher program. Not surprisingly, he found his niche as a key organizer and expeditor of our club's renowned, traditional college scholarships for graduating sen-iors in the Ann Arbor Public Schools. Rip is devoted to his wife of 60+ years, Judy, and they are the proud parents of two sons. He coached high school baseball in this area for 39 years and an annual county

baseball tournament is named in his honor. Says Past President Peter Schork, "Coach Kinney taught me the fundamentals of baseball and he is an inspiration to our college scholarship program with his leadership and dedication to setting and achieving career goals for young people.” Our annual presentation of the scholarships and camperships will be held on April 30th at the Kiwanis Center. A tip-of-the-hat to Rip Kinney.
