Stuck for ideas, and taunted by his rival William Thackeray (Simon Callow), Dickens sets out to write and self-publish a book he hopes will keep his family afloat.

Taking inspiration from characters encountered in the real world, as well as his imagination and a dark secret from his past, in six weeks Dickens creates the masterpiece that became 'A Christmas Carol'. Along the way he also helps define the holiday, establishing traditions that remain commonplace today.

This warm family drama recounts the story in entertaining, educational fashion, opening up the creative process, highlighting issues around social inequality, and capturing something of the life of one of our greatest authors.
