What’s Your Take?Romantics will not want to miss the modern classic

WestSideStory at Plays & Players thru Sun Nov 7. What’s your all-time favorite love story?

• Owner of Haddon Heights’ Village Cheese Shop & Bistro,

ETHEL HARRISON enjoyed “Somewhere in Time, a movie

with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour.”

• DEBBIE RODGERS was found ordering breakfast fare at Village Cheese Shop & Bistro before reporting to work at PNC Bank in Haddon Heights. She adored the movie Never Been Kissed starring Drew Barrymore. “Her character was so innocent and funny ... and the guy in the movie was so cute!” Debbie exclaimed.

• Spoiler Alert! A sales associate at Main Street Realty in Haddon Heights, MONIQUE DOWNING is a fan of The Notebook. She explained, “I loved the whole movie, especially the ending when the woman realizes the whole story is about her, right before she dies.”

• PAUL and JOYCE CIERVO, of Main Street Realty in Haddon Heights, had no

trouble coming up with an answer. The

Ciervos, who have been married for almost 35 years, recalled enjoying

the film Love Story. “I always liked Ali

MacGraw,” Paul replied. Joyce

appreciated the movie’s message,

“love lives on.”

• The past president of the Haddonfield Historical Society, DIANNE SNODGRASS is busy preparing Greenfield Hall for the society’s Halloween events (see page 21) and the “It’s A Toy Story” exhibit (see page 24). Primarily a fan of mysteries, Dianne revealed that one love story she enjoyed reading was

Emily Brontë’s classic Wuthering Heights.

• Haddonfield nanny JENNA HINDELANG is pictured enjoying

some treats in Kings Court on a sunny fall morning with two-

year-old ADINA DOMINITZ. Jenna’s favorite love story is The Notebook. “No matter how long the characters were apart, they

found each other in the end,” Jenna sighed.

Hitch a ride to lizzie Haddon’s Autumn fair Don’t miss a true Haddonfield tradition on Sat Oct 23 when Elizabeth Haddon Elementary School (501 Redman Ave) holds its 60th annual Autumn Fair! The event, sponsored by the Lizzie Haddon PTA, will be held rain or shine from 11am to 3pm on school grounds. A “must” for families with children, the celebra-tion will feature food, pony rides, inflatables, face painting, the ever-popular Golf Fish Toss, and “Guess Again” jars. Grown ups will have almost as much fun as the kids! Be sure to purchase raffle tickets and peruse the tombola baskets and auction items. Lucky winners will leave the fair with extravagant prizes. Up for grabs: a trip to Williamsburg VA via private plane for dinner, a bi-plane sight-seeing tour of Ocean City, sky diving at Free Fall Adven-ture in Williamstown, an iPod Touch, autographed Flyers gear, a $75 gift certificate to Pipsqueak, and more. Proceeds from the fair support technological improvements in the classroom, as well as the Bookworm and Noontime Enrichment programs at the school. haddonfield.k12.nj.us/eh

Our history’s in your hands The Historical Society needs volunteers! Help preserve history by donating your time. There are several scanning projects available. Volunteers will scan delicate materials in order to make them more accessible to the general public and reduce the handling of the materials over the long run. Volunteers are also needed to organize and digitize the society’s collections. To learn more, e-mail [email protected]. Do you have a special interest or talent? Those who wish to help the society in other ways may call 429-7375.

This question is a legitimate one that all Rotar-ians asked themselves before they became mem-bers of their local clubs. What is the answer? Why do people voluntarily give up personal time each week – early in the morning, during lunchtime, and at night – to attend club meetings? Why do they give up personal time – during the day, at night, and on weekends – to perform community service? When J. David Newell, a Rotarian in Chester-town MD, informally asked fellow Rotarians why they joined the organization, the answers were pretty much what he expected: “for the business contacts”; “it’s good public relations for my busi-ness”; “my employer required me to”; “my father was a Rotarian for most of his life”; “my best friend convinced me to join”; “for the social connections.” The responses were generally self-centered. But when Newell asked those same Rotarians why they have remained members of the organization, a different – and deeper – set of reasons emerged. These new reasons related to values. They are values we embrace as private individuals and which make us the sorts of persons we are. They are the values that are embodied in the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self,” and in the Four-Way Test: truth, fairness, goodwill, and friendship. They are the values of persons with community spirit and a commitment to helping make the world a better place. The most common question that many Rotar-ians are asked is not “Why do you belong to Rota-ry?” but a more fundamental one: “What’s Rotary, anyway.” Some years ago, a member of the Rotary Club of Haddonfield developed an easy-to-remember,seven-word answer: “Doing good. And having fun doing it.” If you were to ask the more nearly 120 members of our Club if that’s what it’s all about, there’s no doubt they’d agree. Is Rotary for you? Are you for Rotary? We’d be happytohelpyoufindout.

Kick it old school You can learn to the dance like the characters in films such as SenseandSensibility and Emma. Held every Tuesday from 8 to 10pm at the Had-donfield Friends Meeting House, English Dancing lessons are open to all. Singles and couples are welcome to join. The footwork isn’t too fancy, there is rarely any body contact, and you don’t need a perfect sense of timing or coordination. Friends Meeting House is located at Lake Street and Friends Ave. Be sure to call 429-9186 prior to attending the lessons.

All aboard! Generally, the West Jersey Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society meets on the fourth Monday of each month at 7:30pm in the Borough Hall, Auditorium. The next meeting will be held on Mon Oct 25. George Huemmrich will discuss the mechanical side of the Pennsylvania Reading Seashore Line and the Pennsylvania Railroad. He retired from the railroads after serving in numerous positions (Huemmrich was a management foreman during the Blizzard of 1958). Learn about the efforts to keep trains running despite obstacles. 547-5324
