Where there’s a will... For several years, Mrs Rose Callicot and her pets travelled regularly from Ayrshire to our hospital. She was so impressed with the treatment she received from the staff, that when she died in 2002, she left over £16,000 in her will to support our vital work in animal health and welfare. Mrs Callicot and her love of animals will now be remembered in perpetuity, as her gift will name one of 11 consulting rooms in our new building. Her name will appear on a permanent Donor Wall in reception, as well as on a plaque on the consulting room door. “This bequest is very important to us, as traditionally, we have tended in the past to receive such gifts solely from our graduates, who have an affinity with the University having studied here for their five year undergraduate course,” explained Dean, Professor Stuart Reid. “Mrs Callicot, we believe, had no other connection to the University other than she experienced top-class care in our hospital and she wanted to say “thank you” by remembering us in her will,” he continued. “One of the things which continues to strike me most, is the huge numbers of letters we receive from grateful families after their animal has been treated. For some, it may not be possible for them to offer support to us currently, but by considering leaving a bequest to the Faculty, it allows a gift to be made which will make a difference to us in the future.” For further information on how to leave a bequest to support our work, and for a copy of our Bequests Guide, please go to: www.gla.ac.uk/faculties/vet/smallanimalhospital/ newhospitalcampaign/bequests/ Or contact Ailsa Macmillan at: [email protected] Or by telephone on 0141 330 2808 SMALL ANIMAL HOSPITAL Major Gift • For Holly • The Moffat Charitable Trust • Toby Charitable Trust Platinium Gift • Professor Michael H. Mays, has made a major gift to the Small Animal Hospital campaign. The Moffat Charitable Trust has pledged £60,000, which will go to support the chemotherapy and isolation unit in the new building. “In the past, we had a long and happy association with AT Mays, when the Faculty booked all travel through the company,” said Dean, Professor Stuart Reid. “I am delighted that this link will be celebrated in perpetuity by naming this important function within the hospital.” At its peak, AT Mays, which was based in Saltcoats in Ayrshire, was one of the four largest travel agents in Britain, employing 2500 staff in 272 branches. In 1988, the firm was sold to the Royal Bank of Scotland and eleven years later, the Moffat Charitable Trust was established, predominantly to support medical and educational establishments and places where the company had prospered. “When we are making donations, we tend to start in Saltcoats and radiate out,” explains chairman of the Trustees, Jamie Moffat. “Before we make a decision, we ask whether there was a local connection or whether there was an AT Mays in the area, because we feel like some of the money was generated in that local community and we’re giving it back to them.” “We are very aware that the Small Animal Hospital provides a valuable service to communities throughout Scotland and we are delighted to be able to support it in this way.” Pictured are five year old Connor and three year old Samantha Collins from Girvan with their dog Susie. Susie was diagnosed with diabetes and as a result had to undergo surgery to have both eyes removed. Connor explained that she is coping very well and enjoys going out for walks. “We decided to have a sponsored walk to raise money for the Small Animal Hospital, so on 22nd September, which was a lovely sunny day, we walked along Girvan beach with two of our friends, Charis and Danielle.” “We asked all our friends to sponsor us and we raised £109! Thank you to everyone who looks after Susie so well.” Date for your Diary For those who would like the opportunity to take their dog for a sponsored walk, our fourth annual Doggy Dawdle will take place at Garscube on Sunday 10th May 2009. Where there’s a will...For several years, Mrs Rose Callicot and her pets travelled regularly from Ayrshire to our hospital. She was so impressed with the treatment she received from the staff, that when she died in 2002, she left over £16,000 in her will to support our vital work in animal health and welfare.

His most unusual recent outing was when his pin badges were used as favours at the recent wedding of Glasgow University graduates, Shadan Noorbakhsh and Robert Mudge, who held their reception in the splendour of the University’s Bute Hall. A shot of one badge even appeared in thecouple’sweddingvideo!

“We are great animal lovers and when we learnt about the new Small Animal Hospital appeal, it seemed an ideal way to support the campaign and also publicise it as a good cause to our family and friends,” Shadan explained. “All our guests were delighted and thought it was really unusual and interesting and it prompted a great deal of conversation around the tables.”

Mascot Dougie attends alumni wedding–asafavour!our hospital mascot, Dougie the dog, appears on many items – hospital scrubs, publicity material and on lapel pin badges which are sold by supporters throughout the country.

Staff at our Small Animal Hospital have helped a young sheepdog with a nose for trouble!

All male staff and students working in the hospital were invited to grow and groom a variety of facial hair for the whole month of November and to be sponsored for their increasing hirsuteness, with the person raising the most money being crowned “Top Tasche” at the end of the month.

Inaddition, threemembersofseniorstaff, whoalready were be-whiskered, were challenged to a competition, with the winner of the most money raised having to remove their much-cherishedfacial hair.

Despite a generous donation to save it from his wife, whom he claims has never seen him withoutabeard, hospitaldirector,Dr.IanRamsey, was leading from the start with the “Remove the Ramsey” movement growing as fast as the other participants’ stubble.
