ALASKA West Lodge is aremote fishing camplocated on the banks of

the Kanektok River inSouthwest Alaska, whichguarantees first-class fishing incomplete wilderness.

The river has a tremendous run ofkings that come in from mid-June untilthe end of July. The absolute peak ofthe fishing is the first two to threeweeks. This is a big game fishadventure and once bitten by the bug,it’s a hard habit to cure. Atlanticsalmon anglers leave bewildered by theawesome power of these fly gobbling

giants. The fish are tide bright andsealiced and can be caught ontraditional “down and across” swingingtactics with double handed rods andbig spider patterns. This will appeal tothe cognoscenti of the Atlantic salmonworld.

Not to be overlooked is the fact thatthe river also has one of the best silversalmon runs along with superbrainbows and very strong runs of theother species. This means it can alsooffer out of this world fly fishing duringthe rest of the season.

With an angler to guide ratio of twoto one, Alaska West offers incrediblyhard working guiding professionalswho stop at nothing short of “making it

happen” for their angling clientele. The equipment, although an integralpart of the ensemble, is second only tothe can do attitude, enthusiasm andexpertise of this exceptional group ofindividuals. Alaska West is very proudof its entire staff. The crew is comprisedof motivated, dedicated and highlyskilled persons, whose commitment toa good job well done is seldomequalled in this industry.

Alaska West is one of Alaska’s mostfly fishable rivers offering a variedrange of fishing options, includingprolific runs of the five species ofPacific salmon, as well as dolly vardenand resident rainbow trout. It is truewilderness fishing at its best

Alaska’s premier wild rainbow and salmon river

THE Copper River is one of the premierwild rainbow trout rivers in Alaska;and considered by many to be one of

the premier fly fishing rivers in the world. It is a State of Alaska designated “trophy

rainbow river” and regulated to “fly fishingonly; catch and release.” It is thisdesignation that has kept the fishing on theriver so outstanding. The Copper River is aclassic trout stream packed with long, dry,fly glides, deep winding pools studded withboulders, faster riffles, and deep undercutbanks.

The Copper River is one of the last placesin the world where fly fishermen can do

battle with wild rainbow trout that reachwell over ten pounds. These rainbows arethe largest in Alaska. They are bright silver, full of fire and a real joy to catch.

For the serious salmon fisherman there isalso a prolific run of sockeye salmon.Salmon are so abundant and such hardfighters that a fisherman’s arm will tire longbefore the end of the day arrives.

When the sockeye first run into the river, this is a particularly enticing time for the flyfisherman who enjoys incredible salmonfishing or sight-fishing nymphs and dry fliesto Alaska-size rainbows in some very thinwater.

The AreaWe have chosen what we believe to be one of the bestrivers in Alaska in an area of outstanding naturalbeauty. The Copper River Lodge is unlike most otherAlaskan lodges which are typically located in smalltowns and native villages, because it is totally isolatedin the midst of the vast Alaskan wilderness andtherefore offers you the best Alaska has to offer both interms of fishing and a unique wilderness experience. This is an area where towering mountains preside overa magnificent landscape, and the rivers are filled withthe world’s greatest sportfish.

The Copper River LodgeThe Copper River Lodge only caters to six fly fishinganglers a week. This ensures personal service, and arelaxing atmosphere that is impossible to find at manyother larger lodges in Alaska. The lodge is the onlyoperation located directly on the river, so we nevermiss a day of fishing due to the weather. Additionally, use of a 20-foot lake boat is available to access otherrivers in the area. From your arrival on the lodge dock until yourdeparture, you will enjoy an unrivalled standard ofpersonal service. What most distinguishes this lodgefrom the others is the professional guide staff. For them guiding is a profession, not a summer job. They understand that flexibility is the key to anyholiday and have extensive experience with flyfisherman in destinations as far as Mongolia, SouthAmerica, Russia and throughout Alaska.

Hospitality, Food and DrinkOur gourmet food will leave nothing to be desired.Fresh baked bread, pastries, and rolls complementmeals created by our professional kitchen staff. If there is something you crave, or if you have dietaryrestrictions, just let us know.

BRITISH COLUMBIA

EVERY year the runs of salmonthat enter British Columbia’srivers number in the tens of

millions. However, for many anglers, the real prize that British Columbiahas to offer is the phenomenal runsof large wild steelhead.

These fish are probably the hardestfighting and most acrobatic of allgame fish and British Columbia hassome of the most incredible andexciting steelhead fishing in theworld.

There are few rivers where it ispossible to catch steelhead up 30pounds.

The Sustut is one of them and isregarded as one of the finest of thenorthern steelhead rivers in BritishColumbia. The fish on the Sustut areamong British Columbia’s largest andaverage around 12 pounds, but oftenreach well into the high twenties. There are 30 to 35 pound fish landedyearly.

The river is also one of the mostbeautiful with a great mix of longboulder filled runs, short pockets, great side channels and unforgettableglassy dry fly guides.

The Sustut River has severaladvantages over other rivers:

no crowds, clear water and its fish arehuge... built for a long, cold winter.Due to its remote nature, it is tooexpensive for weekend travellers tovisit, so there is little angling pressureand much of the water remainsunfished throughout a season

The fish are all wild, large and verynumerous and contrary to publicopinion, steelhead are aggressive andeasily catchable for an angler of anyskill level. Perhaps one of thegreatest joys on the Sustut River is tofish the dry fly as it is without doubtone of the most exciting ways tocatch a steelhead.

THE mighty Rio Santa Cruz ishome to the only steelheadruns on the whole Atlantic

coast. From February to Maychrome bright steelhead between8 and 25lbs enter the river fromthe ocean in huge numbers.

This majestic waterway rises inthe huge glacier fed LagosArgentinos in the Andes and thencarves its way for over 360kmsthrough the sere brown Patagonianplains to the Atlantic Ocean. The milky blue appearance andlatent power of the river createa striking impression resulting in asteelhead fly fishery like no other.

Pioneers in the 1900’sintroduced rainbow troutoriginating from California’s

McCloud River. Forgotten andvirtually untouched by the hand ofman these fish were allowed toflourish and now representprobably the single largestuntapped steelhead resource inthe world. Steelhead on the SantaCruz hit the fly hard and as befitstheir powerful environment oftenrun out huge lengths of line inacrobatic fashion.

Steelhead have often beencredited as being one, if not the, hardest fighting migratory fish andthe specimens in Santa Cruz areno exception. Using fast, rigid, inflatable boats we have theability to cover greater expanses ofthe river than ever before and thelimit to what can be fished isrestricted only by your stamina.

TRIP DETAILS

We do not profess to know more than 20% of the available water, however, what we do know is that 20% is more than a match for agroup of eight intrepid anglers. The Santa Cruz should be considered as nothing less than anawesome glacial river running at a rapid pace through a highdesert environment. This is emphatically not a river for the be ginneror inexperienced fly fisher and whilst wading and bank fishing areless intimidating than they first appear noboy shouldunderestimate the challenge of fishing for sea run rainbows in thisenvironment.

We have, however, recruited Mario, probably the mostexperienced guide that Santa Cruz has to offer, with over twodecades of experience guiding for steelhead on the river, he quitesimply knows where to fish.

The Area & The FishingIn 2005 and 2006 we conducted test fishing progams along the

length of the river. Whereas before all fishing on the river ha dbeen limited to the lower stretches of the river for the first time wenow have access to the entire length and breadth. Over theprevious two seasons we experienced some exceptional fishing andthis has given us the knowledge and the opportunity to gain an un-paralleled understanding of this mighty and prolific river.

Optional Two Day Trip to Jurassic LakeAs part of the package we also plan to offer two days of fishing

for huge rainbow trout in our newly found Jurassic Lake. For thosewho choose to travel to Jurassic Lake it takes 5 to 6 hours and theroads are extremely tough. The pay off for those who make the t ripis wild rainbows from 5 to 20 pounds in a remote and virtuallyuntouched area of Patagonia.

The LodgeOur operation will be based at the Piedra Buena hotel, located

by the river, where we will have our own service area, nice roo msand a dining area for our anglers. The operation will be superv isedby a manager that will make sure all is running smoothly and canoffer help with tackle and instruction. Furthermore, we will haveour own chef to guarantee the standard of food that we are knownfor in Las Buitreras.

Loop Tackle ServiceAs a Loop run and sponsored lodge, San Ramon will have thelatest array of Loop rods, reels and lines available to trial or borrowthroughout your stay.

Wise Men Tips• Combine a trip to Santa Cruz with a trip to Las Buitreras (also inArgentina) in search of sea trout, the traditional quarry of Pa tagoniafishermen.

THE fishery on the Agua BoaRiver is without doubt one ofthe best we have encountered.

It is perfectly suited to fly fishing. The water is so clear, that moststrikes are visible. Many anglers visitthe Royal Amazon Lodge strictly tosight fish for peacock bass, arowana, pacu and a host of other junglespecies. The Royal Amazon Lodge onthe Agua Boa River is the Amazon’sfirst and only fly fishing peacockbass lodge.

Fishing includes the three speciesof peacock bass: the butterfly (up to10 pounds), the paca (up to 20

pounds), and the temensis (up to 24pounds). Peacock bass are perhapsone of the toughest gamefish aroundTheir top water strike is often soferocious that the entire fish will flyseveral feet out of the water with thefly. Once hooked peacocks exhibita savvy toughness unknown to troutand largemouth bass fisherman

The AreaThe Amazon Rainforest has long inspired awe andwonder whether viewed as an environmentalist, anaturalist or simply as a result of being mesmerised infront of a television documentary. The Agua Boa Riverin the midst of the Amazon Basin, the world’s largestfreshwater river system and the largest ecosystemanywhere on the planet represents a truly remarkableenvironment. Quite apart from the fishing you are likelyto not only hear the sounds and smells of the jungle butsee a huge variety of wildlife including monkeys, manatee, river otters, parrots, toucans and anteaters toname but a few.

Royal Amazon LodgeThe Royal Amazon lodge is located in one of theAmazon Rainforest’s last remaining tracts of uncut anduninhabited rainforest. Flanked by a combination ofupland forest, flood forest and svannah with itsunspoilt diversity of wildlife it makes for both aninteresting and scenic stay.

The lodge itself provides fishermen with exceptionalcomfort, warm and friendly service, in a secluded andprivate location. On top of this the size of the lodge islimited to afford anglers a greater expanse of fishingwater whilst fostering a homely atmosphere and it isthis combination of factors which allows us to state thatyou will not find a better lodge in theAmazon.

Alternative ActivitiesBrazil is a fascinating country to visit, not only for therainforest but for the vibrant energy of its cities.Manaus is the capital of the state of Amazonas and isthe hub for peacock bass fishermen tavelling to theAmazon. It is a city built upon the wealth of the forestand although its riches have faded since the days of therubber barons, its history and architecture remain verymuch alive. It is well worth a day visiting the famousopera house and markets of the city after you havefinished our fishing trip

Wise Men TipsThere is an abundance of wildlife to be seen duringyour trip, so make sure to read up beforehand withwildlife books such as the excellent “Brazil: Amazon& Pantanal” by David Pearson and Les Beletsky(available to buy on our website).

THE west of Ireland is blessedwith large crystal-clear limestoneloughs that support a massive

population of wild brown trout. Thesetrout are some of the fittest andstrongest you will catch anywhere andfight far beyond their size. You willhave the chance to catch the trout of alifetime and fish over 10lbs are takenon the fly every year with trout of 5lbsto 7lbs not uncommon. The fishing season on these loughsfall into distinctive periods whencertain methods far-out fish othersFrom opening day on 15th Februarywet fly fishing is the norm when the

fish can be found feeding on shrimp, hoglouse and small fry. This is followedby the duck-fly which usually starts inmid-March and continues to mid-April.At this time buzzer fishing is by far thebest method but dries and small wetscan also work.

From mid-April to mid-May there is‘Olive’ fishing on wet, dry and nymphsduring which time buzzer can also playa major part. Early May to mid-Junebrings the famous ‘Mayfly’ hatches. Thefishing at this time can be superb forboth wet fly and dry fly, as well asdapping the live insects. Hatchingthroughout the olive and mayflyhatches are massive ‘greyboy’ and‘campo’ buzzers which trout also feedon. An evening spent gnat fishing or‘ball and buzzer’ fishing is also highlyrecommended.

Around these great loughs the localschool children get a special week’sholiday to collect Mayfly and sell themto the visiting anglers to make somepocket money.

June to mid-August daytime troutfishing depends on weather conditions, whereby early morning and lateevening fishing can be more productivewhen sedges hatch in large numbers.Mid-August through to the end of theseason trout can be found over deepwater feeding on daphnia as well ason sedges and fry in the shallows.

In summary, throughout the entirefishing season, these loughs offer thevisiting angler ample opportunities andvaried methods to catch beautiful wildbrown trout for which this region hasbecome so famous.

HE Fermanagh Lakeland is one of the most scenic areas of Ireland that not only

offers some of the best wild trout fishing but also the chance of catching Atlantic salmon. WhereWiseMenFish gives you the chance to enjoy excellent fishing, accommodation, food and the famous Irish hospitality. Traditional lough style fishing is the norm drifting from a 19' lough boat and for those less experienced anglers we can offer instruction from fully qualified guides.Lower Lough Erne is a huge expanse of water 18 miles long and up to five miles wide, with depths of up to 200 feet and many islands and rocky outcrops. This

gives an ideal habitat for wild brown trout which average 2lbs with many much larger specimens caught each season. Early season fishing starts in the shallows around the rocky areas where the trout are feeding on hog louse and shrimp. This is then followed in early April with the duck fly hatch and the olive hatch towards the end of April and start of May. The highlight of the season is the mayfly, for which Lough Erne is justly famous. The mayfly hatch lasts three to four weeks and fantastic sport can be had pulling wet flies through the waves as well as fishing dries. In July and August fishing can be challenging but fishing early morning and late evening with sedge patterns can be excellent. From mid-August to the end of the season traditional wet fly fishing is the best as the fish turn on to daphnia. Also available on the Erne, when trout fishing is slow, is the chance to catch pike on the fly. The Pike is Irelands largest fresh water predator and

can provide excellent sport with the possibility of catching some very big fish.

Lough Melvin compliments Lough Erne due to the fact that it not only fishes throughout the season but it can fish well due to the fact it holds four separate trout species as well as salmon and char. No artificial stocking has ever taken place on Melvin and the trout have not changed since the Ice Age, making this Lough a must for the wild trout enthusiast. The four species of trout are brown trout, gillaroo, sonaghan, and ferrox. So different genetically are these that scientists have suggested that they be regarded as separate species. Salmon enter Lough Melvin from January each year but the fishing on the Lough does not start until 1st February. They are frequently caught while trout fishing and therefore add a bit of spice to your days fishing throughout the year.

MONGOLIA

MONGOLIA presents a rareglimpse of a wild exotic landunchanged in time.

For most, just the opportunity toexperience a pristine unfenced landscape, undeveloped river valleys lined withhealthy forests and high peaks or a pair ofMongolian riders driving their stockthrough a high mountain meadow on acrisp fall morning is enough.

Combine this with the opportunity tocatch the world’s largest most aggressivesalmonid and a unique and compellingproposition begins to unfold. The taimenhave been known to reach weights of 200pounds in the rivers of Siberia and arerenowned for their voracious strikes.

Most of our fishing for the taimen is donewith dry flies and we have not found anyfish unwilling to take a properly fished dryfly swinging across their lie. In ourexperience, these are the greatestfreshwater gamefish in the world.

All fishing is catch and release withsingle, barbless hooks. Taimen are handledwith the utmost of care and considerationof the fish’s well being.

We regard the fishery as one of theplanet’s healthiest taimen populations. Themost overlooked aspect of the fishing is thedry fly fishing for lenok, the oldest memberof the trout family. Lenok run from 16 to 30inches long. They spend a majority of theirtime in shallow water where they can becaught on assorted dry flies and terrestrials

The AreaMongolia offers a wonderful cultural and sporting experience fortoday’s angler. It provides the opportunity to step backwards in timewhere people still move to the rhythms of the seasons and thelandscapes are still unbroken. For years, Mongolia has been knownas a land of fiece nomads, barren steppes, and cold, desertlandscapes. In fact, a closer glance reveals fertile river valleysinhabited by kind, hospitable nomads, and rivers filled with fish. The rivers where taimen are found are small to mid-size low gradientrivers that will remind the fly fisherman of places such as Montana.

The river valleys are also home to populations of elk, wolves, deer, and the ubiquitous herds of sheep or cattle.

The Sweetwater LodgeBoth the lodge and fishing are run bythe outfitter Sweetater Travel Limitedand as a result the highest levels ofstandards are maintained throughout. The facilities are located on the banksof the river and provide a wonderfulhome during your visit to Mongolia.

Anglers stay in the gers while at camp — gers are the Mongolian felttents which dot the Mongolian countryside. Each ger has beenupgraded to include electric lights, hot water, wood stoves, wo odfloors and comfortable beds. These spacious Mongolian homes arecomfortable and offer clients a truly unique living experience. Formany clients, staying in a ger is one of the highlights of the trip.

CUBA

In the Jardines de la Reinayou will find some of thefinest bonefishing in the

world. With hundreds of milesof flats, you will get to fishmany areas where few anglershave ever cast a fly. Thebonefish are both large andeasy to catch. The averagesized bonefish is perhaps asolid three to five pounds, butthere are opportunities tocatch fish in the seven to tenpound class every day.

This destination offers not only some ofthe best flats fishing in the world for fly

fishermen, but anglers using spinning andbait casting tackle can catch a widevariety of fish along the reef. It is notuncommon for anglers to catch morethan twenty species of fish in just a fewdays. Huge groupers, snappers, horse eyejacks and jack crevalle, barracuda, sharksand other blue water fish abound.

Tarpon fishing at Jardines de la Reina isquite simply amazing. They are abundantand readily available on the flats and inthe channels and “rivers” on any day. Most of the fish in the channels are“baby” tarpon - fish in the ten to fortypound class, which are a delight on a tenweight rod to catch. These smaller tarponare far more acrobatic than their largercousins but fight hard enough to makeyou work at catching them. In the flatsthe average size grows from 45 to 80 lbsand in a new fishery discovered in 2002,

in a deep ocean channel, the specimensgrow to over 120 lbs.

Permit are also found in good numbersand the fishing is similar to the very bestin the Florida Keys. The flats where wefind the largest permit are two to threefeet deep on a high tide, yet adjacent todeep water. Many of these fish are in thetwenty to thirty pound class, with a fewwell over thirty. Silky sharks andCaribbean reef sharks can also be caughton the flats and sharks up to 150 lbs havebeen landed by fly anglers. Seeing one ofthese monsters roll up to the surface andsmash a popper is sure to get youradrenalin flowing.

In summary, Jardines de la Reina offerssome of the finest light tackle fishing inthe Caribbean.

TRIP DETAILSThe AreaNamed the Queen’s Gardens by Christopher Columbus, theJardines de la Reina is a pristine chain of islands, very similarin nature to the Florida Keys in the USA. The island systemruns more than one hundred miles back to the northwest, from Cuba’s south-eastern coast. Most of the area we fish isforty to fifty miles offshore and has been designated as aCuban National Park.

As such, there is no commercial fishing in this exclusivearea, which covers nearly eighty miles. There is no habitationof any kind on any of the islands in the National Park. This isa huge expanse of saltwater wilderness, perhaps the last placelike this left in the world today. With Cuba’s continuedprotection it should remain a treasure forever.

The Accommodation There is a range of accommodation available at Los Jardinesde la Reina while you are ourguest. For example there isthe “Tortuga” — a large, 110foot long, double-deckedfloating hotel withaccommodation for 14 anglers(two per room).

This is an unbelievably solidboat, made of steel and thenanchored in a protected channel, so that it never movesabout. The threat of getting seasick is non-existent. This boatdoesn’t move one inch. Each cabin has its own shower withhot water, toilet and individually adjustable high tech air-conditioning system. A large air-conditioned dining roomdownstairs with both a foredeck and afterdeck makes this avery comfortable home away from home.

The staff at the accommodation are all extremely helpfuland will do their best to tend to your every need.

Wise Men TipsOur resident “Wise Man”, the lodge co-owner FilippoInvernizzi, highlights that you should spend at least one dayin Havana. “From the beautiful Spanish colonial architectureof the Old Town, to the spectacular Havana Centro, this is amust day trip.” (For anglers travelling from Europe, VirginAtlantic gives you flexibility to spend extra days in Havana).
