Issue No 22 29/07/2015

Dear Parents,

As a school community may we keep Fr Joseph Tran and his family in our prayers on the passing last Sunday of his beloved grandmother Mrs Lieu Tran.

May Mrs Tran rest peacefully in the gentle arms of her Lord.

Information in regard to the Requiem Mass and Religious Services is detailed further in this newsletter. Community members are very welcome to attend any of the Masses.

After my time away, it has been wonderful to see the children back safe, well and ready for an important term of work and play. Congratulations to all children who are in full school winter uniform and representing our school with pride in both the way they wear their uniform and in their actions.

A huge thank you must go out to all those parents who have worked so enthusiastically on revamping and renovating the Pre-Primary playground! It is an amazing transformation and you have certainly started the ball rolling on making this a special area of outdoor play and learning for our children. It is difficult to single people out when so many have worked tirelessly, but I take this opportunity of thanking Nadine Cooperwhite for coordinating the project, getting everyone on board and continuing to build a vibrant community. A few pictures of the Pre-Primary playground are included below.

Our school community this term will be focused on our Year 4 children as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Eucharist. We ask Jesus to be with our children and families during this time. As our Sacramental Program is family focused, Parish based and School supported, our children will have the opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament in the Parish Community in which they regularly participate. If this is not Our Lady of the Mission Parish and you wish for your child to make their First Communion elsewhere, please let us know.

Students not returning in 2016: At this time of the year the Catholic Education Office asks all Catholic schools in Western Australia to provide anticipated 2016 student numbers. If you intend to have your children attend school elsewhere next year, please advise the Admin staff as this will assist us when compiling accurate numbers and giving notice to families on our wait list.

We are nearing capacity with regards to enrolments in our Kindergarten classes for 2016. If you know of anyone seeking a place in this program it is important that applications are submitted so that they can be either offered a place or placed on a waitlist. This is important, as toward the end of the year some families will withdraw their enrolment for employment and other reasons. In such a circumstance it is possible to make a second round of offers depending on the places available.

On a final note, a huge thank you must go to Pep and Marie Ienco (Jamel House of Fine Furniture) for their very generous donation of new conference furniture for the Principal’s Office. It has been a real pleasure working at that beautiful Marri wood table!

Many blessings

Tamara McGougan PRINCIPAL

SCHOOL PHOTOS On Tuesday 4 August and Wednesday 5 August, the school photos will be taking place in the school hall. There are a number of issues that require your attention for these two days:

Children must wear their full school winter uniform on both days. If your child normally wears their sports uniform on Tuesday or Wednesday, they must be in full winter school uniform for these two days.

Academy Photography is offering the chance to have family portraits done again this year. If you wish for your children to have a family photo together, please obtain the family photo envelope from the Office. This is a separate envelope from your children’s individual photo envelope.

Please note the arrangements for Pre Kindy classes. Photos will only be taken on Tuesday and Wednesday. If your child is in Pre Kindy on Thursday they should attend on Tuesday from 9.00 – 9.20am for an individual and group photo. Photos are not compulsory, however, it would be a lovely memento of their first year at school.

School photo envelopes must be returned to the school by Friday 31st July. Every student must return their envelope, even if they are not buying photos. If for some reason you have not received an envelope, please let the office know as soon as possible.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB Please return all book orders by Friday 7th August. No late orders can be accepted. Please make cheques payable to Whitford Catholic Primary School. WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN Please continue to bring in your Woolworths Earn and Learn points sheets and stickers and pop them in the box just outside the Office. The more we collect, the more new resources we can get for our school!

Adriano D’Adamo PE SPECIALIST SOCIAL WORKER NEWS Self-time – What every parent needs – Happy Children, Steve Biddulph

You can’t give love if you don’t have a clear sense of self. And a sense of self only comes when you give yourself space to be. Every day, you must keep some time just for yourself. Some people get up early, or stay up late when everyone else has gone to bed, to get this time. Others make a deal with their partner to provide some self-time for each other.

Self-time is even more important than couple time, because you cannot connect with your partner until you have re-established a sense of self. Once you are happy in yourself, you will feel like being close to another person, but not usually until then.

Self-time does not mean doing housework, though sometimes a big clean up while the kids are minded can be very satisfying. It could mean time with friends. Watching TV doesn’t do it well – you lose yourself rather than find yourself. Writing works very well – letters or a journal. Praying or meditation is good if you have a spiritual dimension. Reading is pretty good. Head off to the bush, go into the garden, walk the dog. Everyone has their preferred way of having self-time. The important thing is to do it and to schedule it regularly. Try to meet all with peace and ease.

Catherine McAuley (1838) Feeding the Five Thousand: In Sunday’s gospel, John 6:1-15, we hear of one of Jesus miracles to meet the everyday need of the people. He draws on the limited resources of the littlest of his followers to nourish and sustain the multitudes. This was brought out so beautifully, as the 180 children preparing for their first communion made their commitment at the weekend masses and so a multitude of people, family members, were drawn into the celebration of the Eucharist, to be nourished and sustained. Let us keep those children and families in our prayers. May they continue to be drawn to the celebration of the Eucharist each week. Jesus will feed you! Kids of Mercy: Last week the ladies were very impressed with Oliver Frost’s rendition of “Greensleeves.” The ladies lounge is always abuzz with excitement. It is so beautiful to see. Our visits are brief, only 20 minutes, but they bring a lot of joy to the Sisters and ladies at Mercyville. Children should expect to be rostered on around three times in the year. On the Fridays they do attend, they would need to meet promptly in front of the office when the second lunch bell sounds. We then proceed to Mercyville and meet with the ladies in their common room for a chat, show and tell or music performance. We leave in time to start classes at 1.40 pm. If you would like your child to be involved please write me a note. This week, Week 2, the children attending are NAOMIE VERHEYDEN 1B, BRANDON PAWLE 1G, BENJAMIN JACOB 1W, MASON PICKARD 2B, TAYLA HENRIQUES 2G, MIKAYLA LONG 2W, LACHLAN DUNN 3B, NIAMH WOOLS-COBB 3B, EVANGELINE McALPINE 4G, JETT STOLP 4G, OWEN HURLEY 5B AND JYE CAMILERI 6G. Remember to bring some show and tell. It helps to keep the conversation going. LIBRARY NEWS Book Week: Books Light Up Our World: Book Week will be held in Week 6 of Term 3 this year and the theme asks us to reflect on how stories can brighten our day and enlighten us to the perspectives of other people and their experiences. The dress-up parade may not be until Friday 28th August but you can all start thinking of characters that have shone for you and shed a light on your life. The short-list for 2015 can be viewed at http://cbca.org.au/ShortList-2015.htm Library Quiz: Congratulations to Mark Puiu and Adam Lewis in 5B who correctly solved: There are twenty people standing over a volcano on a bridge. The bridge breaks the people fall in. Twenty four heads pop up, how is that possible? There are 20 fore-heads. Not 24 heads. This week: What is the centre of gravity?
