Issue No 2 11/02/2015

Dear Parents, We have a child at our school in Year One who is receiving treatment for leukaemia. He is doing well and attends school on a regular basis. As his immune system is affected by the chemotherapy treatments, he is at a greater risk from contagious illness than other children. As such, it is important that you let the school know as soon as possible if your child develops chickenpox or any other contagious illness such as measles or influenza.

As always, we ask that children be kept home from school when they are unwell. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter. Please call the school if you have questions or concerns.

Our return to school has been very smooth in terms of students, staff and families……so a huge thank you to everyone! We have however, had significant issues with our internet and emails due to a critical outrage at the datacentre that houses CathEdNet. From Monday to Friday last week, our [email protected] address was not functioning, so we ask that anyone who tried contacting the office at this address to please resend their communication, especially any absentee notes.

It was great to see all our new and experienced 2015 PEACE mums meeting with Elaine Mahon this morning. Thank you for your enthusiasm and commitment, it certainly sounded like a lot of fun and laughter.

How lucky are we that the incredible and phenomenal Giants are in town this Friday, Saturday and Sunday! What a great opportunity to catch the train into town with your children and participate in this free fable across the streets of Perth. What an AMAZING experience it should be.

Many blessings Tamara McGougan PRINCIPAL

Excellence Sports Academy Last week some families will have received a flyer advertising football registration as part of the Excellence Football Academy. Please note that this is a sporting centre and not a care centre as advertised at the bottom of the flyer. We apologise for the miscommunication on this flyer. SCHOOL FEES Please note that School Fees are being sent out this week.

CONGESTION OUTSIDE YEAR 1B (Mrs Hughes/Mrs Badock) We ask that all Year One parents who collect children from their classrooms wait in the courtyard area rather than in the walkway between PP and Year One. We are currently experiencing significant congestion in this area, especially  outside the 1B classroom. This is making it difficult for people  to get through,  as well as creating a safety issue for our little people. The courtyard is a lovely place to wait, we look forward to seeing you there.

ACROD PARKING Please remember these bays are only for people with acrod stickers and stickers must be displayed.

PRE-PRIMARY We have all settled in beautifully to Pre Primary and we are enjoying making new friends and learning lots of new things.

Year 1 We have really enjoyed catching up with our friends and making new ones. Welcome to all our new families! Our teachers are very impressed with how we have settled into the Year 1 routines.

Year 2 We have been exploring water using our five senses. This week we are talking about where we find fresh water and how we can use water responsibly at home and at school.

Year 3 We've had a great start to the year and we are looking forward to trying out our skills at badminton tomorrow!

Year 4 Once upon a time there were 2 Year 4 classes learning all about narratives. We are hoping for a happy ending! Year 5 We have been very busy this week studying place value in Maths and analysing narratives in Literacy. It has been an awesome start to the year and we are having a great time working as a team.

Year 6 We love our new classrooms and are trying really hard to get used to the new routines and ways of thinking. SCHOOL BANKING Welcome back to the 2015 school year. Just a reminder that school banking day is a Tuesday morning. Pat the dog can be found outside the school office from 8:30am ready to collect your deposit books. Can I please ask if the new class number can be written on the front of the deposit folders, allowing them to be returned to the correct classroom. We would like to say thank you to Julia Shaw and Melissa Arundel for volunteering their time to the school banking last year and welcome to Stephanie Stritch and Wendy Scanlan for volunteering their time to school banking for 2015. The new rewards are out and ready to be ordered so get saving and collecting tokens toward ordering a reward.

Go to the people: Listen to them. Learn from them.

Love them. Catherine McAuley

This Sunday’s gospel saw Jesus reach out and heal Simon Peter’s mother-in-law and she immediately responded by waiting upon the group. Our challenge is to recognise the goodness our Heavenly Father bestows on us and respond in service of others. The parish Ministry Fair is conducted 21st and 22nd February, after each Mass, where the various groups in our parish showcase their outreach. Come find your niche in our parish.

Pianist/Organist/Keyboardist: The 8am Mass choir urgently requires a pianist to accompany the choir on 2 to 3 weekends a month. They must be able to attend a weekly practice and able to commit to the Sunday Mass time. If you can offer your time and talent please call Celine on 9307 5199 or 0431 114 763.

Kids of Mercy: With 40 students signed up already we are going to start our visits this Friday. The visits are brief, only 20 minutes, but they bring a lot of joy to the Sisters and ladies at Mercyville. Children should expect to be rostered on twice per semester. On the Fridays they do attend, they would need to meet promptly in front of the office when the second lunch bell sounds. We then proceed to Mercyville and meet with the ladies in their common room for a chat, show and tell or music performance. We leave in time to start classes at 1.40pm. If you would like your child to be involved please fill out the slip below and return it to the office or myself in the library. All participants from last year must re-enrol if they interested in coming along this year.

LIBRARY NEWS Library is Cool: Our library is the coolest place to be in our school. We have the most air conditioners! Don’t forget to pop in to play some games with your friends. You can perform puppet shows, build with the blocks, race with the hot wheels tracks, connect with the Lego, dress the Barbies, colour, cut and paste with the scrap paper, practise your educational games on the computers or just relax with a book on our comfy cushions. Feel free to pop in and change your books before school, at lunch or after school (with your parent’s permission).

Congratulations: Fantastic work 2 White! Never have I had a class bring all their library bags in the very first week. You are library stars. Pre-primary children need to go on a “bag hunt” this week. I’m sure you’ll “catch a big one”.

Library Days are: Tuesday: Year 6s, PP White, Year 1s Blue & White. Wednesday: Year 3 Blue, Year 2s. Thursday: Year 5s, Year 1 Gold, PP Blue and Gold, Year 4 Blue Friday: Year 4 Gold and Year 3 Gold.

Recycling Batteries and Mobile Phone Paraphernalia: Our purply bin is ready and waiting for your donations. It is essential that only batteries and mobile phone parts go in the bin. No plastic bags, computer parts, ink cartridges or rubbish!

Library Quiz: Congratulations to Arann Salinger, 6 Blue, for correctly answering Mr Clarke is one of our new teachers. This week: Which saint has his feast day this Saturday? Hint: See you in the Library. St Jerome, pray for us. Mrs Annette Lynch TEACHER/LIBRARIAN SOCIAL WORKER NEWS: As we are all no doubt trying desperately to muster cooperation in getting back into routines, I thought this might prove useful! Taken from - How To Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk, Adele Faber & Elaine Mazlish. 5 Skills you may find helpful to Engage Cooperation: - 1. Describe – Describe what you see, or describe the problem. When adults describe the problem, it gives children a chance to tell themselves what to do. “There’s a wet towel on the bed.” 2. Give information – When children are given information, they can usually figure out for themselves what needs to be done. “The towel is getting my blanket wet.” 3. Say it with a word – Children dislike lectures, sermons and long explanations. For them the shorter the reminder, the better. “The Towel!” 4. Talk about your feelings – It is easier to cooperate with someone who is expressing irritation or anger, as long as you are not being attacked. “I don’t like sleeping in a wet bed!” 5. Write a note – Sometimes nothing we say is as effective as the written word. Above the towel rack – “Please put me back so I can dry. Thanks! The Towel!” Rainbows and Seasons permission slips are due back this Friday 13th February. Elaine Mahon SOCIAL WORKER Available Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesdays P&F NEWS Our first Family Movie Night will be held on the school oval on Friday 13th March. Gates open at 6.30pm and the movie will start at 7.30pm. This year we will be showing Despicable Me 2 and there will be a BBQ available. More information will be sent out this week.

Wednesday 18th February will be our first P&F meeting for 2015. If you have an hour free please come and join us in the staffroom at 7.30pm. We would love to see some new faces. Nadine Cooperwhite P&F PRESIDENT
