I) Britain Imperializes

A) First country to industrialize (Why?)

B) Strong navy (military ships)

C) Strong military (army)

II) ImperialismA) Imperialism – domination by one country over another country or area

B) Using new technology developed during the Industrial Revolution, Western European countries began to use their new power for invasion

III) Why Europe imperialized?

***A) Need More Natural Resources – for manufacturing (iron, coal, rubber, oil, steel).

***B) Needs New Markets - Lots of goods produced in European factories. Europe wants to force weaker countries to buy those goods.

III) Why Europe imperialized?

C) Smooth Coastline– New steam ships needed places to refuel. Africa coast was smooth and perfect for ports

D) Good Will – It was the “right thing” to do to share European technology and science with “lesser” countries
