We would like to say a big thank you to our fantastic distribution team who work so hard in all weathers!

DEAR RESIDENTS...Hello, and welcome to your March edition of Widnes Local. Remember we deliver to alternate areas around Widnes each month, so keep hold our your copy until the next one lands on your doorstep, you never know when you might need to contact one of our advertisers. You can always see the latest version on our website: widneslocal.co.uk.

This month we’ll be celebrating Mother’s Day on Sunday 14th March and as many of our advertisers have some great gift ideas why not treat her to something special, maybe some jewellery or a hair treatment? You can pre-order your flowers from the The Flower Shop - see page 32.

Several of our advertisers have reader discounts on this month - see Namaste Interiors on page 10 and the Gallery on page 27. Please don’t forget to let all our advertisers know where you got their details from, it’s good for them to know you saw them in your copy of Widnes Local.

Many of our advertisers have been with us since issue 1, but we still have some business categories such as a carpet cleaner or a security firm who could benefit from reaching thousands of houses directly each month and our rates start from only £15 per month, so there is something for everyone’s budget.

‘Til next time, take care and keep in touch!

Competition Results

In the autumn we ran a lifestyle family portrait

competition with Andrew Collier Photography and had a terrific response. The lucky winners were the Wallis family from Widnes.

When Andrew Collier rang Janet Wallis to tell her the news, she just wanted a picture of her two sons but Andrew suggested they should have something for the whole family. Andrew explained that his sessions were great fun and he would create something really natural and very different from a typical studio portrait.

The first part of the session was at the Wallis’s home and then they all went to a local country park for the second part of the session. Andrew loves using natural light and local environments and the disused quarry provided a fantastic backdrop.

After the session everyone said they’d had a great time and really enjoyed being photographed by Andrew. Janet said ‘I was worried about feeling self conscious but Andrew’s relaxed approach made us feel really comfortable in front of the camera and it was so different to anything we’ve experienced before. We’ve just received our bespoke framed picture and it looks gorgeous on our dining room wall.’

The photographs featured are a small selection from the day.

Gardening... A Cutting Garden

For centuries flowers have been used to create beautiful displays and to scent

homes. Cut flowers bring a little bit of your garden into your house and an extra, cheering sense of life.

If you love to have fresh flowers adorning your rooms, why not create a dedicated cutting garden to provide your own flowers all year round? You don’t need as much room for this as you might think and can even grow them in containers.

Set aside a patch of ground that receives plenty of sunshine and cultivate it like a standard vegetable patch. This means digging over the soil, adding humus, ensuring good drainage and scattering a slow release fertiliser. It is useful to plant the flowers in rows leaving enough space between them to walk along while harvesting.

Fill your cutting garden with flowers you

love and don’t forget to grow some foliage too. Your main planning is to decide which plants you wish to cultivate, when they flower and how tall they grow. Build your knowledge by researching in which seasons your preferred species bloom and plant accordingly so you can have fresh flowers for most of the year. For the winter months, consider putting in some plants for drying to create everlasting arrangements. Specimens such as Chinese lanterns, globe thistles and statice are perfect for this.

Group each variety together to make them easier to cut, keeping the tallest plants in

an area where they won’t cast shadows on the shorter ones. Mix perennials, bulbs, shrubs and annuals for a constant and diverse selection.

Annuals are perfect for a cutting garden because regularly picking the flowers encourages new bloom production. Some species of annuals to consider are rudbeckias, cornflowers, marigolds, nigella, and spectacular short sunflowers.

Plant the annuals in succession so you have a steady supply. Once their flowering season is over, pull up the plants and replace with another species, but don’t forget to feed the soil before replanting.

Perennials such as Japanese anemones, gypsophila, chrysanthemums and Michaelmas daisies are ideal for the cutting garden and don’t need to be re-planted each year. Bulbs are also wonderful as cut flowers, with daffodils and their relations being the most popular. Other stunning bulbs to consider are alliums, irises, lilies and gladioli.

To get you started right away, here are some flowers you can put in now, as long as the weather isn’t too cold. Plant summer-flowering bulbs such as lily and gladioli and perennials such as lavender. Sweet-peas can be sown outside in a sheltered area now too. Other hardy annuals you can sow now are larkspur, nigella, and marigolds.

If you have space, include some shrubs and trees for foliage and branches to add to your fresh flower arrangements. The perfect foliage shrub is pittosporum which comes in a variety of sizes and colours from deep burgundy leaves to pale variegated ones.

As well as being able to step outside and pick a lovely bunch of fresh flowers whenever you want, you could also grow enough to provide bouquets for your friends and family. Everyone loves to receive flowers.

Recipe24

March’s Recipe

Raspberry Muffins

Home-made muffins fresh from the oven are truly delicious and so

easy to make. This basic recipe works with any flavouring - you can replace the raspberries with other fruit such as blueberries, diced apple or dried apricots or try adding chunks of milk, white or plain chocolate. They are best eaten on the day of making.

Makes 12 Ready in 35mins

Preheat the oven to 200C, 400F, Gas 6. Line a 12-hole 1. muffin tray with 12 paper muffin cases.

Sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl 2. and stir in the sugar. Coarsely grate the chilled butter into the bowl and stir with a fork to coat in the flour mixture.

Beat together the egg and milk then pour into the bowl. 3. Mix lightly with a fork until just combined. Take care not to over beat the mixture - it should still be a little lumpy. Gently fold in the raspberries.

Spoon the mixture into the muffin cases. Bake in the 4. preheated oven for 20-25 mins until the muffins are risen and golden. Sprinkle lightly with a little extra sugar whilst still warm, if liked.

250g (9oz) plain flour

1tbsp baking powder

75g (3oz) butter, chilled

100g (4oz) golden caster sugar

1 large egg

175ml (6fl oz) milk

150g (5oz) fresh raspberries

Extra sugar for sprinkling (optional)
