...and welcome to the very latest edition of Widnes Local Mag...I’m going to start with my inspirational quote this time rather than end with it... for a couple of reasons. Firstly if the world didn’t end on 21st December (I was writing this just before we went to print on 20th!) as was predicted then it’s very apt and also because I think it’s a good philosophy for the New Year. We can sometimes worry about the little things so much when they either won’t happen or we can’t do anything about them anyway.

We had a really interesting phone call recently from the producers of ‘Come Dine with Me! (shh…it’s one of my secret guilty pleasures… ) asking if we knew any interesting characters who may want to apply for a future show! Let us know if you want details and we’ll put you in touch.

Also worth mentioning is that we are always looking for new writers, so if you’re involved in any community groups and want to contribute to a future editorial feature then drop us a line. We’re particularly keen to get a regular contribution from a local teenager, so if you know someone aged around 14-16 who is keen to get some great journalistic experience then get them to drop us an email or give us a call. It would look great on their statement when they’re looking to apply to universities.

The Local Magazines – the only local magazine that can offer 3 ways to connect – via the magazine, via our website or via our own fab new phone app! And that makes us unique!

Until next time...

Choosing Fabrics for the Home

How to choose fabricsBefore buying fabric, ask for a swatch or, even better, borrow or buy a length of fabric that can be draped at the window or placed over a sofa or cushion. It is invaluable to see how the fabric looks in situ, at different times of the day and night. Ask these questions before you start:

• How wide is the fabric? The wider it is, the better the value, and the less sewing will be required. 140cm is average.

• How heavy is it? Heavier fabrics are usually too bulky for small projects, while lighter fabrics usually wear more quickly.

• How durable is it? Fabric is divided into categories depending on whether it will be subjected to light, general or heavy domestic use.

• Is it washable? And, if so, has it been pre-shrunk?

• If it is patterned, what size is the repeat? Large patterns require more fabric so that you can match the repeats.

Types of fabricFabrics are composed of natural or synthetic fibres, or blends of them, and made using a wide variety of weaves.

FIBRES... Cotton can range from lightweight muslin to heavy canvas. It is the most commonly used fabric for home furnishings as it dyes and prints well, and is easy to care for. Linen has a lovely drape and lustre, is durable, but has a tendency to crease (hence is often mixed with

other fibres). Nylon, or polyamide, is tough and resists abrasion, but tends to produce static electricity. Polyester is a very strong synthetic fibre that mixes well with other fibres to produce versatile fabrics. It can withstand high temperatures and frequent washing. Silk comes in intense colours and has an attractive, lustrous surface. Not as hard-wearing as other fibres. Viscose is made from wood pulp. It is hard-wearing and durable. Wool is breathable, warm and naturally water-resistant. Available in a wide range of thicknesses and textures, it varies from heavy sheep’s wool to fine cashmere. It will felt if washed at a high temperature.

WEAVES... Bouclé has a looped pile. Corduroy features pile in stripes that may be narrow or wide. Damasks contrast matt and shiny areas of pattern and are usually rather traditional in style. Jacquards feature a complex, raised pattern. Moiré is a water-mark pattern, often found on silks. Plain weaves have a smooth surface. Satin is heavy with a lustrous surface, usually made from silk or polyester. Twill weave produces diagonal or zig zag lines on the surface. Denim is a heavy-cotton twill, for example. Velvet may be made from a variety of fibres and features a luxurious, soft pile.

Patterned, textured or plain, subtle or spectacular, fabrics can transform a room. Our guide will help you sort the silks from the synthetics and the cottons from the corduroys, while giving you the lowdown on what to use where.

What to use whereUPHOLSTERY... • Hard-wearing, tightly woven fabrics are best for most upholstery. Medium-to heavy-weight cottons and cotton mixes, linen mixes and wools are all good, conventional choices, while corduroy, denim and low-pile velvet are interesting as well as usable.

• Avoid deep piles, which may become crushed, and loose or loopy weaves, which are likely to snag.

• Bold motifs should usually be centred on sofa or chair backs. You will need to buy more fabric to ensure everything fits in the right place.

LOOSE COVERS... • Choose a fabric that is washable and substantial enough to hold its shape yet soft enough to be comfortable: medium-weight cottons, linens or blends, or light wools are all ideal.

CURTAINS... • Curtains can be made of practically any fabric, from cotton and linen to velvet, silk or wool.

• As well as the conventional fabrics, consider unusual ones such as blankets, tweed, fleece, mohair, canvas or madras, or perhaps a sari, a length of vintage embroidery or a lovely chintz quilt.

• Very thick, heavy fabrics will be too bulky for small window openings.

• Sheer fabrics will not hold a crisp fold and will allow light through.

CUSHIONS... • Choose almost any fabric, within reason.

• You could use remnants from fabric used elsewhere in the room, or choose complementary patterns and colours in a different fabric.

• Use expensive fabrics, as you’ll need such a small amount (use cheaper fabric for the back).

BED AND TABLE LINEN... • Light to medium weight cottons, linens and cotton or linen blends are best. Avoid pure linen if you don’t like ironing.

• Loose, textured and pile weaves are impractical for these purposes.

• Choose fabrics that will withstand frequent washing

• For outdoor and children’s dining, oilcloth is ideal.

Pippa Greenwoodby

February is the time of year to think about perfect potatoes and smashing spuds. Home grown potatoes are an incredibly good value crop and you’ll soon find that the so-called humble spud is actually a very tasty and extremely versatile vegetable.

If you don’t have much space, use a 45cm (18in) diameter pot with a single tuber. Make sure the container is well supplied with drainage holes, fill it two thirds full of compost, pop a tuber in the centre and add a further couple of inches of compost. As foliage appears, add more compost to cover it over and repeat until no more can be added, then keep the container well watered.

Most potatoes produce a slightly earlier and somewhat heavier crop if the seed potatoes are allowed to produce small but sturdy sprouts before planting. Stand the tubers widest end uppermost in a seed tray or old egg carton and place these in a cool but frost free spot with plenty of natural light. After a few weeks the sprouts will be about 1cm tall, perfect for planting.

What to Grow:

•Steamed potatoes are delicious, especially if cooked the day you lift them. Try Vanessa, Dunluce, Edzell Blue and Lady Christl for some of the tastiest steamers.

Pippa Greenwood

•New potatoes dripping in chives and butter are wonderful. Try Lady Christl, Charlotte, Juliette, Casa Blanca, Nadine and Nicola.

•If you adore mashed potato then try Dunluce, Valour, Maris Bard, Lady Balfour and King Edward.

•If you love your potatoes in their jackets, then try Cara, Lady Balfour, Picasso, Kestrel, King Edward, Desiree and Valor.

•For great roast potatoes try Kestrel, Maris Piper, Desiree, Lady Balfour, Vivaldi and Edzel Blue.

•For the best chips, use Kestrel, King Edward, Maris Peer, Accord, Rooster and Edzel Blue.

Potatoes are divided into ‘earlies’ (first to be harvested)

and ‘main crop’, generally larger tubers, harvested later. Try ‘earlies’ if your soil hasn’t been cultivated for several years. ‘Earlies’ are in the ground for less time than main crops and are less likely to suffer from wire-worm attack. ‘Earlies’ are also useful in smaller gardens as they takes less space and are in the ground for a shorter period, giving you the opportunity to grow another fast-maturing crop after the potatoes have been lifted.

No crop is without its share of problems and the fungus responsible for potato blight is sometimes hard to beat, especially in warm, damp years. Generally, ‘earlies’ suffer less with blight and you can select varieties which show resistance to the infection such as Valor, Lady Balfour, Coleen and especially Sarpo Mira and

Sarpo Axona.

Slugs are also a real menace, tunnelling into the tubers’ flesh and sometimes even hollowing them out completely. The biological control nematode Nemaslug works under the soil surface, has a brilliant effect and poses no threat to wildlife.

Why not grow some great vegetables in 2013? Visit www.pippagreenwood.com, sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ and choose from a fantastic selection. Pippa sends them to you at just the right time for planting AND each week you receive an email with advice on ensuring great results; from just £29 for up to 66 garden-ready plants and the advice. You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter, receive a free e-book on organic gardening, buy Nemaslug and other biological controls and a hand-picked selection of garden products from her website.

Blueshield... Your Protection from the Cold! John Kenwright and Joe Woodward set up Blueshield just over 3 years ago because they wanted to offer a real alternative to some of the bigger names you might buy boiler protection from. They understood that people like to have reliable breakdown cover in place so that if you do have a problem with your boiler or radiators you won’t have to fork out for potentially expensive repairs! But they also realised that they could offer you the same (probably better…) service but for much less, in fact it’s only £10 per month! And this includes an annual boiler service.

This is typically half what you might expect to pay with the big national companies.

Between the team they have over 45 years experience so you can trust that they know what they’re doing. But you don’t have to just take their word for it... they’re backed by the industry governing body GAS SAFE REGISTER which ensures all their work is compliant to gas safety regulations and all new appliances are registered. Not only that but you’re sure to be greeted with a smile and good old fashioned customer service! They genuinely pride themselves on how they look

after their customers. They won’t sell you a boiler unless you need one and can source genuine approved parts for older boilers from an extensive network of suppliers for most makes.

If you do need a replacement boiler the lovely guys from Blueshield will only fit top quality boilers as they believe buying cheap is expensive in the longer term – how many times have we said to ourselves buy cheap, buy twice! Don’t get blue with the cold this winter – call Blueshield now before the winter grips us!

There’s no shortage of interest in the new Jaguar F-Type, the firm’s boss tells James Baggott...

More than 1,000 buyers have placed a deposit or expressed a serious interest in buying the F-Type. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) managing director Jeremy Hicks said that he asked his dealer network to find out just how popular the new sports car would be, and the results came as a nice surprise.

‘We asked how many people were seriously interested,’ said Hicks. ‘What we’ve found is a very strong level of interest. F-Type will draw from performance saloon and coupe buyers because the design credentials are great. We want this car to re-establish the brand. It’s a big statement car and returns us to where our roots lie: sports cars.’

Priced from £58k, Jaguar is aggressively targeting the Porsche 911 and even though it’s a small sector in terms of sales, the British manufacturer is hoping for great things.

‘We have huge expectations of what it can do for the brand,’ added Hicks. ‘It’s not going to be massive in terms of volumes – remember this is a niche sector we are operating in. The good news is we have three positives; it’s well priced, it drives brilliantly and there’s a home advantage.’

The F-Type, arriving in the brand’s 90 dealers in the spring, is the start of a product offensive from Jaguar. The XF Sportbrake will also be arriving soon and other volume sectors are being explored too.

‘We are laying the foundations for growth and that means new cars in new segments,’ revealed Hicks. ‘The obvious place to go is down to the burgeoning area of the market. We need smaller cars, saloon cars and we’re looking at the crossover market. The SUV market is growing and even though we’re there with JLR, the definitive SUV maker, there

is scope for Jaguar too.’

Hicks explained JLR invests £2bn a year in R&D (he claims that’s higher than any UK car manufacturer) and the team are looking at several options including a replacement for the X Type.

‘Jaguar has an opportunity to move down from the XF,’ he said. ‘A Mondeo sized car. We’ve been there with the X Type and did well however the problem with the X and S Types, in my opinion, was that they were too retrospective. The F Type isn’t; it has lineage and clear DNA, but it’s not a retro car.’

JLR has been a fantastic success story. Whilst in 2008 the manufacturer was accepting loans from the government, new products have launched successfully and the maker has bounced back.

‘What’s the secret? Great cars,’ explained Hicks. ‘The crisis was a combination of financial problems and the SUV market being down in general, plus this was immediately prior to the XF launch.’

‘Since then we’ve had the XF and Evoque launches which have transformed things. We are up 30% year on year. I put that down to a great team and a can-do attitude.’

Hicks said the dealers are seeing the returns too with profitability up.

But the MD has ruled out increasing the size of either the Jaguar or Land Rover networks from their current 90 and 120 points respectively.

‘Both franchises are profitable,’ he said. ‘But that doesn’t mean we’re going to drive growth by expanding the network. The current sites are making good returns so it’s more important to drive more capacity through those. We can see bigger sites at some of our outlets, but not new dealers.’

Local businessman Peter Hart is celebrating 30 years in the art business, he has seen it all when it comes to art, so here is a little bit about how he got started in this fascinating world of art.

Peter started off in 1982 with the purchase of £1000 worth of secondhand picture framing equipment after seeing an advert in a local newspaper. Having worked for a number of years for P&O, he finally decided to make the transition into art to follow his passion.

He began framing out of his garage at home before setting up stall at the old Widnes Market.

He quickly expanded into art dealing and had permanent display windows in the Hillcrest Hotel in Widnes, the Eurocrest Hotel in Runcorn and the Midland Hotel in Manchester, before deciding it was time to open his own gallery.

His dreams became reality when in 1988 he opened his first gallery on Victoria Road, Widnes, and named it, Victoria Gallery.

“On day one I got an order for 40 pictures from the Hillcrest Hotel to furnish their new extension. It wasn’t always so easy, very early mornings and framing late into the night, for the first 12 years I worked 7 days a week, but I was really enjoying myself and couldn’t imagine doing anything else”

He had a great rapport with a number of the old school art dealers and artists, and has

many a tale from those early days, of Brian Shields (Braaq) and Steven Scholes dropping by, of Doug Kewley getting rather tipsy at one of his first exhibitions, of selling his first David Shepherd original and going down to Plymouth to buy paintings direct from Robert Lenkiewicz. That said, times change but the art world is just as exciting, contemporary art is more vibrant and exuberant than ever and European art is really having a huge revival, with outstanding fine art taking centre stage in both the UK and the US.

Fast forward 30 years and the gallery on Victoria Road is still going strong although under a new name, ‘The Unicorn Gallery’, following Peter’s purchase of The Unicorn Gallery in Wilmslow in 2003 and the total refurbishment of

the premises in Widnes.

Peter is proud of what he has achieved, and the past 30 years have flown by, the galleries have gone from strength to strength and Peter now has 2 successful galleries which boast over 1000 superb works of art.

He always claims he’ll never retire, he ‘loves it too much’, so on that note here’s to the next 30 years!

10 Easy Ways

to Save Money...

While many people hold notions of being better with money, it’s rare that a practical action plan is put together. Here are ten top money-saving tips which are commonly-overlooked and which, over the course of the year, will have a drastic impact on your expendable income.

1. Pausing for Thought The four-day wait works. Any time you’re about to buy something which isn’t a necessity, listen to that niggling voice on your shoulder and wait four days until purchasing. Developing this simple habit rids you of compulsive buying inclinations and affords you time to compare prices online.

2. Balance Your Bank Account Few people take the time to balance bank statements. What your bank statement says you have at the end of each month is not the money that’s available to spend. Learn to reconcile your accounts and track your finances properly. Understanding your financial throughput properly will help develop positive spending habits.

3. Resell Your Clutter It’s frighteningly easy to accumulate unnecessary and unused products. Survey your belongings and unclutter your house and loft by setting up a Gumtree or eBay

account. Rid yourself of these things in a way which will make you money.

4. Transfer Your Balances If you have credit cards debt, find another credit card offering 0% interest for several months, sign up and transfer the balance over. You can do this as many times as there are card companies and it will save you a fortune in interest.

5. Insurance Swapping Put aside an afternoon to phone all of your insurance companies. Finding cheaper deals on your car, home, life and other insurances will take just a couple of hours and could save you hundreds of pounds.

6. Mortgage Shopping While you may have been given a good deal on your mortgage initially, shopping around for a new mortgage could save you hundreds or even thousands of pounds every year if you find a great deal, so spend an afternoon hunting around. Always check the small print.

7. 0% Interest on Purchases When purchasing new products which offer 0% interest, the APR is worked into the price. If you’re in a position to pay cash, negotiate with the salesperson to do so, but minus the interest worked into the cost. You’d be surprised how often

this works and, if the salesperson seems uppity, ask to speak to the manager.

8. Creative Re-using Develop the habit of re-using things. Use modified cornflake boxes for file holders and the bags inside for storing bread in the freezer. Re-use padded envelopes, cut old towels into cleaning cloths and always be on the lookout for new and creative ways to re-use things to save money.

9. Claiming Tax Benefits A certain stigma used to be attached to claiming tax benefits. Not anymore, and the government puts tax credits at the heart of family budget policies to garner public support. Make sure you take advantage of this and claim for child benefit, working tax and child tax credit if you’re eligible: www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/taxcredits.htm

10. Join Moneysaving Expert Saving money should become a hobby and there’s no better place to do so than Moneysaving Expert. The forums are awash with incredibly insightful and useful guides on how to save more money than you ever thought possible. CHOCOLATE PECAN PIE If you have a bowlful of nuts left over from Christmas then why not make this classic American favourite with a British twist – simply replace half the pecan nuts with walnuts, hazelnuts and Brazil nuts. Serve with a dollop of thick Greek yoghurt or whipped cream. WHAT TO DO...

• To make the pastry, sift the flour into a bowl and add the diced butter. Using your fingertips, rub the btutter into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the egg and water and mix to a crumbly dough.

• Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently until smooth. Wrap and chill the pastry for 20 minutes.

•Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 25cm round deep metal pie tin (or a loose-based fluted flan tin).

•Crimp the pastry edge with your fingers and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill for 30 minutes.

•Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6 and place a baking sheet in the oven to heat.

• To make the filling, melt the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water.

•Remove from the heat and stir in the golden syrup, maple syrup and sugar then whisk in the beaten eggs. Chop half the nuts and stir into the mixture.

For the pastry:•225g plain flour

•100g butter, diced•1 medium egg, beaten with

2tbsp cold water

For the filling:•100g dark chocolate, broken

into pieces

•50g butter, diced•75g golden syrup•4 tbsp maple syrup•75g caster sugar

•4 medium eggs, beaten•175g pecan nuts (or a mixture

of pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts and Brazil nuts)

I first met the brains behind Bombay 8, business partners Chand and Mofozul back in October, on the very day their contractors had just started on the transformation of a bare shell to the stylish and inviting Bombay 8 Bar and Restaurant that just 6 weeks later opened to the public! It was fascinating to see, the builders had literally just marked out on the floor where the main walls were going to be and I had to visualise the restaurant area, bar area and where the kitchens were going to be.

Just 6 weeks later we were lucky enough to be invited back along to the opening party of Bombay 8 and I was astounded to see the bare breeze block was now this modern and contemporary restaurant! I really liked the interior, the furniture, the bar layout, the colour

scheme and I loved the slate wall that was a real feature. But what was more impressive came out of the kitchen just a little while later!

There were 10 of us in our party and we started with deliciously fresh and crunchy papadoms with a selection of onion, mango, mint and chilli. Then we all had a mixed dish of vegetable and meat starters, including sheek kebab, chicken tikka, garlic chicken, onion bhaji, samosa and pakora, and none of us could decide on our favourite as they were all so tasty. We all then had our choice from the menu – I opted for the Lamb Shank, which was so tender it had obviously been cooked slowly for hours as the meat just fell away, Phil went for Chicken Afghan, a slightly hotter dish with a two chilli rating, which of course I had to try – it was quite different to mine

but so tasty without being too hot. I won’t tell you exactly what we all had as that would be like reading the menu! What I can say is that everyone really enjoyed their meal and there was a real variety of chicken, lamb and fish dishes adorning our table! Along with a selection of wines and beers, and of course soft drinks for the drivers – lots of choice for all.

I’ve been back twice since then – once when I was out shopping in the Gemini Retail Park and we ate from the lunch special menu for less than £6 each! And then again I called in and grabbed a takeaway one Friday night!

All three experiences have been very pleasant indeed, don’t take my word for it – call in and try for yourself?

When it comes to skincare most of us are pretty good at looking after our face. We’re used to cleansing, toning and moisturising as part of our daily routine and every year we spend a small fortune on trying products that claim to make us look more beautiful, youthful and radiant. We think nothing of this, but what about our body?

Many of us completely neglect the rest of our skin, especially in the wintertime. It’s easy to become lazy when you’re covered up under layers of clothing, but we all want soft skin.

If you’re honest you probably won’t have thoroughly scrubbed, buffed and polished your body since the summer months just before applying your fake tan. There’s no doubt that your skin will be looking lackluster as a result.

You’ll be pleased to hear then, that there are some quick, easy and simple steps that will have you ready to bare all in no time. All you have to do is promise to follow them once or twice a week. The reward? Fabulous skin all over.

The Benefits of Brushing There’s been a lot of hype about body brushing. It has been shown to have great results on reducing the appearance of cellulite, toning

the skin and guaranteeing a youthful glow.

Using a dry natural bristle body brush, work from your feet upwards in long, firm, sweeping strokes. Be careful not to press too hard - the idea is to invigorate the skin, not irritate it.

This action has been proven to boost circulation and lift skin-dulling impurities from the pores in one easy action.

Be Brave - Boost Your Circulation Although this isn’t the most appealing step, it definitely does the job. When you’re in the shower, alternate between blasts of warm and cold water for about 30 seconds. You only need to do it a couple of times to encourage blood that’s rich with fresh nutrients and oxygen to travel to the surface of your skin, leaving it looking healthy and glowing.

Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate Exfoliators have great results when used on both face and body. The tiny grains lift and remove impurities and dead skin cells from the skin, leaving it looking instantly brighter.

It’s best to use an exfoliator that has fine particles, rather than coarser varieties, because they are less abrasive on the skin.

Use a circular motion to apply the product to damp skin and work from your feet upwards, spending time massaging every bit of your skin.

Rinse thoroughly, and move on.

Gently Does It Whether you consider your skin to be sensitive or not, it’s always best to choose a shower gel that’s designed for sensitive skin and one which has natural ingredients.

The harsh chemicals that can be found in some products strip the skin of essential moisture and leave it feeling dry and irritated.

Don’t be tempted to have the water too hot when you’re in the shower, as it dehydrates the skin - instead turn down the heat to pleasantly warm.

Lock-In Moisture It’s essential to moisturise your body every time you shower.

Leave your skin damp and massage a generous amount of product into the skin - this helps to lock-in moisture for long-lasting hydration.

Again, try to use creams that have been designed for sensitive skin and which have no harsh ingredients.

Try to avoid perfumed products. They can contain strong chemicals which have a drying effect on delicate areas of skin.

It’s the New Year, and having eaten and drunk your way through the contents of at least three shopping trolleys during the festive season, you are feeling in need of a quick fix so you can begin to feel healthy again.

The time of the year doesn’t help. Spring is still a couple of months away and although you’d love to go for a bracing walk in the park, you know that after half an hour in muddy boots, being soaked by persistent rain, you’ll give up and go home.

But what’s the alternative when you need a regular exercise regime to help you lose weight and regain vitality?

Working out at home with the help of a video console has become a popular alternative to going out to a dance class or a gym. The great advantage is that it allows you to design a programme to suit your own needs and preferences.

However if - like me - you’re not a great self-motivator, you

may find it hard to keep going without a human instructor to give encouragement. After several attempts to follow anaerobic routine in my lounge I felt that the floorboards had suffered enough and made the decision to join a regular exercise class.

So how do you find a movement class that will suit you? A quick browse round the websites of local clubs is likely to reveal a baffling array of exercise styles with exotic-sounding names such as Zumba, Pilates, Ashtanga Yoga, Spinning, Hatha Yoga and Tai Chi.

It’s nice to be spoiled for choice, but there are a few things to consider before you start shopping for the lycra bodysuit and matching accessories. How old are you? Do you have any medical conditions? How much exercise do you normally take (for example, do you regularly walk, bicycle, play a sport, or are you a complete couch potato)?

If a leisurely stroll around the supermarket has maybe been

your main form of exercise then perhaps you should consider BodyFit Express for Women? Their highly trained staff proved a personalised programme for you around a 10 station circuit. It includes all elements of fitness – cardiovascular, toning and flexibility. it’s suitable for all ages from 18 – 85, and because it’s tailored for you, most people even those with health issues can still exercise with Bodyfit Express

However you decide to pursue your new exercise regime, make a promise to yourself to keep it up. You won’t really start feeling the benefit until you’ve settled in to your new routine and begun to master those new moves. After a few weeks you’ll be surprised to find how much better you feel, both physically and mentally.

It may take a few attempts before you find a class that suits you, but it will be worth it in the end. Make sure the New Year really does mean a new you.

New Year, New You!

Taxing Times... Some self-employed people are really organised and keep all their receipts and invoices in a safe place and file them properly and do their books every month and, when it’s time to fill in their tax returns, have everything they need to hand and can sail through it in a morning or less.

Not me. And quite possibly not you either.

Actually, I do have a system of sorts – the euphemistically-named “dump file” system. Everything related to income tax goes into a big box, and at the end of the year I spend days – two or three, usually – arranging it in some sort of order and turning it into a spreadsheet that bears at least a passing resemblance to what I’ve actually earned and what I’ve actually spent. Then I send it all off to my accountant, who is the rampart that stands between me and HMRC.

We all know the quote about death and taxes (although for the life of me I can’t remember who actually said it – Mark Twain?), but in point of fact we very nearly didn’t

have income tax. It was invented in 1799 along with window tax and hearth tax and clock tax and all those other weird taxes that paid for the Napoleonic Wars. At first it was fairly mild – 10% of all incomes above £60 a year – and as soon as the war was over it was scrapped like all the others.

Even when it was reintroduced in 1842 to recover from a financial crisis, like how never happens nowadays – hah! – it wasn’t expected to be permanent. But it turned out to be one of the easiest of taxes to collect because, in the eyes of the voters (most of whom still didn’t have to pay it), it was the fairest, and – well, we still have it. But it was only about 100 years ago that Lloyd George’s Liberal government really started giving it some wellie. In 1874, for instance, it yielded less than 10% of all government income. Then in 1918 Lloyd George whacked the rate up to 30% to pay for World War I, and even though Mrs Thatcher slashed it to 22% it’s still the mainstay of the Treasury’s revenues.

For those of us lucky enough to have a job – or unlucky enough to

be chained to a desk, depending on how you look at it – income tax is something that can be taken for granted because since 1944, when PAYE was invented, it’s been docked off wages before you can take it down the bookie’s. For the rest of us – well, it’s not something you want to get wrong. HMRC is actually amazingly patient with dysfunctional arithmophobics like me. They’re always very cheery and patient on the odd occasions when I have to ring them, and although I’m sure they wouldn’t bung me in chokey for an error of a few quid, they do quite reasonably expect to receive any underpayment back as quickly as they refund overpayments (which I’ve always found to be pleasingly quickly). And that can blow quite a hole in my none-too-careful budgeting.

Which is why I have an accountant. She’s not all that cheap, but she’s as comforting as a favourite armchair. No shocks, no surprises, nothing to worry about – and occasionally you even find a 50p stuck down the side.

by Ted Bruning.
