As ever a huge welcome to your truly local mag – Widnes Local, packed full of ads for local tradesmen and business so you don’t have to go very far to find a supplier right on your doorstep. We’re also packed with lots of useful community information (that’s completely free!) and well written and interesting editorial features. Let us know if you’d like to contribute.

I’m not going to talk about the weather this month as it’s really not worth mentioning, other than to say I do hope it bucks up soon. I mentioned it and I really didn’t want to…

What do you think of the fab photo’s of Norton Priory on the front cover this month? We’ve got a fascinating write up on Norton Priory this month, see page 14. What a treasure to have on our doorstep.

We’ve just launched a fab new website with a great new online directory so you can search for local businesses even if you’ve not got the latest mag to hand. You can always view the latest mag online too. Why not have a look at www.widneslocal.co.uk? You can also see on www.facebook.com/localmags and on twitter @localmags.

David Broome is our latest completion winner, congratulations! David wins £25 voucher for M&S. This month we’re celebrating the month of June and our

hidden symbol is a peacock feather. This is because peacocks were the holy birds of the Roman goddess Juno (goddess of home and marriage) and also my mum’s name is June! It’s really easy to enter as all you have to do is email/or phone the ad and page number of where we’ve hidden the symbol in the magazine and you could win a £25 voucher for M&S. You’ll also need to give us your name, postcode and phone number.

If you’re a local business and want more customers, and want to reach them directly through their letter box, remember we’re reliably received by 20,000 homes – give us a call, rates start from just £20 per month. Plus you get a FREE listing on our brand new online directory. Remember we’re completely independent, not part of a large corporation or a franchise, we’re simply local people who want to encourage local communities to use local businesses! We really are the Resident’s Handbook.

Flag Ship is a family run business that was established in 1987 by Neil Faulkner and is based in the Moor Lane Business Centre where their showroom is situated.

Whilst still small enough to give a personal service but certainly more than capable of meeting all your installation needs, their customers matter to them and they will deal with all your requirements personally.

Unusually for a Kitchen/Bedroom/Bathroom fitting company, they do not employ salesmen, so you will never find yourself subject to the “hard sell” approach.

Should you decide that you would like a quote for work to your home, they would personally come out to see you to measure, design and price the work. If you’re happy for them to proceed then Flag Ship and

their team will oversee the job from ordering through to completion; they do not use sub-contract fitters, only their own team.

Their customers past and present also speak very highly of Flag Ship: “Both Thelma & I are delighted with the outcome of the work you did in our kitchen and living room. We were also very

impressed with the way that you handled Thelma’s many changes (she’s an expert at that believe me) to both specifications and design, some of them very close to the scheduled start date. You took all of this in your stride and accommodated all of the changes without batting an eyelid. Very impressive, thanks again.” Tom Price

Flag Ship, flying the flag of quality & commitment. Call them today on 0151 495 1100 or visit their showroom at D2 Moor Lane Business Centre, Widnes.

Norton Priory

An historical and horticultural haven in the midst of urban Cheshire,

Norton Priory is recognised as being one of the top visitor attractions in

the North West... and it’s right on our doorstep! But how much do you know about its 900-year history?

A whirlwind history of a site with several lives...Life at Norton Priory began in 1134 when a monastery was built on the remote site near Runcorn for Augustian canons. Such was the stature of the religious retreat, that two centuries later it was granted Abbey status. Its religious glory was not destined to last forever and Norton Priory fell victim of Henry VIII’s dissolution in 1536 when the monasteries were dissolved and sold on to local land owners, the Brooke family. As times changed so did trends and the Tudor house was demolished and a grand Georgian

the changes. Excavated ruins of the monastery buildings show clear footprints of life at the site through the ages. An elevated viewing area with orientation guides make it easy for visitors to step back in time and get an essence of the site in all its glory.

There is one other legendary 12th century presence at Norton Priory and that is a twice-life size, stone-carved statue of St Christopher, the patron saint of travel. The sheer magnitude of the statue makes it an impressive medieval sculpture of national and international signifi cance.

An enchanting woodland is a haven for wildlife with an ever-busy Georgian Walled Garden bursting with colour and scents from springtime onwards. Examples of an English cottage garden, kitchen garden, shaded growing areas and soft fruit production can all be found here as well as a buzzing wildlife scene. Much of the produce from this garden fi nds itself on the menu at Norton Priory’s refectory café.

What might the future have in store for a site with such an intriguing and varied past?... Norton Priory is a place for discovery and learning, and over 10,000 people every year participate in projects, attend courses or take part in school visits. Many diff erent groups contribute to Norton Priory including: ‘Country Garden’, a training initiative for adults with learning disabilities, which runs the Norton Priory café and over 100 dedicated volunteers from all diff erent ages and backgrounds.

The team at Norton Priory has plans to enhance the visitor attraction to its full potential and is currently in the process of applying for a capital redevelopment grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. If successful this would increase the size of the museum gallery area so more of the collection can be on display at once (currently there is only capacity for 5% of the collection to be on show at any given time), and vital restoration work to the 12th century Undercroft would be carried out to ensure it survives for many years to come.

The surprising world of Norton Priory Whatever visitors may expect to fi nd at Norton Priory, a day at the historic museum and gardens reveals a few unexpected surprises…

VIP visitors...Prime Minister Gladstone spent his honeymoon at Norton Priory in 1839 thanks to his close friendship with the Brooke family, owners for nearly 400 years.

HRH Duke of Gloucester opened the Museum in 1982 and paid another visit in 2004.

TV series’ such as Casanova, Island at War and Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps have all fi lmed in this fascinating location.

Amusing architecture The twin archways that can be found at the entrance to the Undercroft were moved here by the Brooke family. One is medieval and one is a Victorian replica. Visitors are challenged to decide which is which!

An ice house is a fi ne example of early refrigeration and

manor built in its place. The Brooke family fi nally ended their reign over Norton Priory in 1921 by pulling down their second house and moving to Worcester to avoid the growth of industry, rising prices and damp. It was not until the 1970s that Runcorn Development Group recognised the historical gems that lay buried and overgrown on the Norton Priory site and drafted in teams of archaeologists, who revealed remains of Norton Priory’s past.

Norton Priory’s place in the modern worldToday an interactive museum gallery forms the heart of the 42-acre site giving access to the Undercroft storage area, the only original 12th century building to have survived all

it survives today having also been used as air raid shelter during the world wars.

A building made from straw bales and recycled car tyres is a great example of the environmental sustainability practiced by Norton Priory.

Some things to spot...A 20-piece sculpture trail is dotted around the site, which have all been inspired by Norton Priory. A kneeling monk and a mosaic bench are just a few to look out for.

Among the many burials at Norton Priory are three coffi ns placed side by side. One of the occupants suff ered from leprosy, and in medieval times it was an extreme rarity for such to be allowed back to the holy site in death, suggesting they were deemed to be of great importance.

St Christopher, the patron saint of travel was struck off the calendar of saints in 1969, with doubt cast upon his legend. However, Norton Priory houses one of the largest and most signifi cant St Christopher statues in the country.

Car buyers are used to driving their new purchase off the forecourt and it instantly plummeting in value. It’s a fact of motoring life. Or is it? What if we told you there are some cars out there that are actually rising in value? And we’re not just talking about automotive exotica either.

We spoke to experts from trade price bible CAP as well as leading auction house BCA to uncover the cars that are turning residual values on their heads.

‘There are some classic and sports cars that will keep going up in value,’ one expert told us. ‘Others will simply hold fi rm. But it’s all dependent on how much you use them and their condition.’

So here are our depreciation-busting top picks.

Rising In Value...by James Baggott

Aston Martin DB7

MIN I

Ford GT

Audi R8

This is a good sign that the recession is easing. Prices for the Volante Convertible version of the stunning Aston Martin DB7 have risen £1,300 in the trade during the last year, according to CAP. An 04-reg, 50,000 miler currently costs £31,400. ‘Today’s buyers appear less concerned about running costs than they were 12 months ago,’ said CAP.

This one surprised us too. CAP has found that the Hard Top 4.0 Sahara two-door model with an automatic gearbox has risen £475 in the last 12 months to a trade price of £5,450. CAP says even at this price it’s considered to be a cheap, heavy-duty vehicle – but only for those that can aff ord to run it.

BCA says despite the volumes currently being sold, the Mini is a future classic in waiting. The auction house told us that One models are selling well for around £3,500 to £4,000 even with as many as 100,000 miles on the clock. But prices for well looked after Countryman, Convertible and Clubman models are the fi rmest.

London-based dealer Clive Sutton specialises in selling the most exclusive supercars. He often sees cars rise in value, but if he was spending his money it would be the Ford GT he’d shell out on. ‘The Ferrari Enzo was the one to go for a while ago, but prices have cooled,’ he told us. ‘Now the Ford GT is the car to invest in.’

It’s the V8-engined sports car from Audi that’s popular with buyers, reports CAP. Our experts said it had a slow start in the used market, but in the last 12 months a 2007 model with 20,000 miles has risen £1,900 in the trade to £53,100. ‘It’s increasing in popularity,’ said CAP’s man in the know.

SOMETHING OLD SOMETHING NEW

Unexpected and individual, unique and environmentally friendly, well-made and timelessly appealing – how does this sound? Whether we’re talking vintage, retro, antique or, erm, just plain old, there are heaps of good reasons why adding a well-chosen selection of ‘mature’ furnishings to any room scheme can be enormously successful. Old pieces make a statement, have a fascinating history and are built to last. The quality of old pine, for example, is vastly superior to that of new pine (and a nicer colour,

until everything feels right.

Colour can be an excellent ally, drawing together disparate items so that they co-ordinate well. It could be that you re-upholster an old armchair and choose co-ordinating cushions for a new sofa, adding in a picture with elements of the same colour, or a vase in a complementary shade. Bingo! An appealing room appears as if by magic. And of course, the easiest and cheapest transformation of all is to repaint. Tables, cabinets and sideboards, wardrobes and chests of drawers, and in particular wooden chairs and stools, can all be rescued, restored and transformed quite easily. A selection of cheap wooden chairs, for example, will look fabulous painted the same matt off -white, no matter how disparate their style – a superbly simple way to mix old and new. A paint job is ideal for a junk-shop fi nd or an old

Ikea purchase – though obviously not for valuable antiques. Changing knobs and handles can also make a dramatic diff erence, giving a vintage feel to a cheap, modern piece, or adding a touch of class to something frumpy and old-fashioned. If you’re feeling bold, you can even add or remove mouldings, replace solid doors with glazing, or fi t additional hanging rails or hooks.

The fi nal guideline is perhaps the most important of all: don’t forget function. Old or new, every piece you choose should do its job brilliantly. Mend that sticking drawer or wobbly chair and then you can be as bold and imaginative as you dare, putting together rooms that are as enjoyable to live in as they are to look at.

neutral. They won’t date and, more importantly, won’t clash with your one-off furnishings. On a similar note, avoid having more than one, or perhaps two, ‘statement’ pieces in a room. When you have chosen a piece that you really love, you can build a scheme around it. It could be a chaise longue, a lamp or a hand-made vase – try to complement its characteristics with other key pieces and to provide a pleasant contrast with others. It’s a subtle one, this. Too much contrived matching and the room will look forced; too many contrasting elements and it will lack coherence. It all comes down to a combination of instinct and trial and error – just keep on trying

too), and old mirrors are much more fl attering. What’s more, including even just one antique piece in an otherwise-modern room will add texture and subtle individuality.

But just how do you combine old with new, contemporary with classic? Especially when the aim is to be both good-looking and practical, with a look that won’t go out of fashion in the next fi ve minutes.

As with all interior design schemes, it’s best to start by assessing your room. Measure it and draw a plan, marking in such key elements as windows, doors, built-in cupboards, radiators, light fi ttings, plus sockets and so on. Do you need to make any structural changes? If so, now’s the time. If the structure is fi ne, consider the room’s size and shape, and whvether its architectural style will aff ect the way in which you decorate. Work out where furniture will go, and whether you have too much or too little of it. Now you have a good idea of what type of things you’ll need to look out for – whether you’re planning a trip to the high street, a charity shop, car boot sale or auction house.

The next important principle is to concentrate on timeless designs. If it’s well designed, whatever era it dates from, it will work with other pieces. Another good rule is to keep fl oors, walls and woodwork

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon may be the famous ones, but why not create a superbly colourful hanging basket of your own? Garden centres and nurseries are crammed full of summer bedding plants at this time of year and there are colours to suit every taste. If aerial gardening is not for you, then the same type of plants can be used to produce a superb container for your terrace, patio or backyard. The great thing about summer bedding containers is that you can do just about whatever you want in the way of planting ...and get away with it. So now that the frosts are over in most areas, why not start planting?

All you need is readily available from your local garden centre: a good-sized basket - choose a 12” basket as it’s easier to keep moist than smaller ones, a hanging-basket liner (make sure it is the same diameter as the basket you’ve chosen), or a good-sized pot or planter with plenty of drainage holes. A good quality multi-purpose compost is essential for excellent results. What you choose is up to you, but the range is vast - Nemesia, Surfi nia Petunias, Upright Petunias, Cineraria ‘Silverdust’, purple-bronze leafed Thalia Fuchsias or their more traditional cousins, Pelargoniums, Lobelia ...the list is endless. Think carefully about colours and textures. Decide whether you’re going for subtle or brash and

bold, or if you would like to co-ordinate the fl owers with other garden features.

If you are planting a basket, place it in a large fl owerpot as this stops the round-bottomed basket from moving and makes it much easier to plant. Place the liner in the basket, adjusting it to fi t the basket and trimming off any excess. Next add handfuls of compost up until the point where you want to plant around the sides of the basket. Planting slits are included in some liners. If you are using a pot, place a few inches of broken fl ower pots or large stones in the base and top up with compost to within a few inches of the pot rim.

Carefully remove the plants you need from their containers, easing the root balls out gently but fi rmly. An upright plant such as a Fuchsia or Pelargonium is a perfect choice for the centre of the basket or container as it helps to give your planting height and structure. For hanging baskets carefully ease the root ball of each through the planting slit and nestle the root ball in to the compost. It is easier posting the roots through and you’re less likely to do any long term damage.

Any container looks better if there are plants cascading over the sides, so choose trailing plants and put these in around the edge. Space the trailing plants evenly around the sides of the basket.

Drizzle compost around and between the root balls of all the plants, making sure that each one has new and fresh compost to grow in to. Use your fi ngers to fi rm the compost and make sure that there are no gaps. It is best to use a combination of cascading plants and some upright ones around the outer edges of a basket. This will ensure a really well fi lled and colourful display and should help to hide the basket framework too.

Once the planting is complete, water the container thoroughly using a watering can with the rose attached. It is best not to hang a basket up or stand a pot in its fi nal position until it has had a few days ‘rest’ sitting in a cool spot out of too much hot, direct sunshine. This little rest period allows the plants to settle in to their new home and perform better later on.

Tips for Keeping your Summer Planter or Basket Looking Great

Water regularly, never letting the compost • dry out completely. Use a watering can with rose attached, or a gentle spray nozzle on the end of a hose to minimise the risk of disturbing the compost or the plants.

If the container does become too dry it may be • diffi cult to re-wet the compost. If so, carefully sit it in a bowl of water for about an hour, allowing it to soak up the water it needs from the base and sides.

Regularly remove faded fl owers, before they have • a chance to set seed. This should help to encourage the plants to continue producing more fl owers. Pinching them off by hand works well for most plants but if the stems are a bit tough, use secateurs or sharp scissors.

Check regularly for any pests such as greenfl y • and treat the problem promptly. When plants are as tightly crammed together as they are in a fl ourishing basket or patio pot, problems soon build up and spread if you’re not quick off the mark.

Feed every couple of weeks with a high-potash • liquid fertiliser such as a tomato feed, as this will

help to encourage more fl owers to develop. If you position a planter full of summer bedding on the paving beneath a hanging basket, then any excess water or feed from the basket won’t be wasted.

An Englishman In New York

One of my favourite places in the world to visit with my band is the USA. We’ve now toured there fi ve times and every year I learn something new about the country. In light of this, I thought it might be of use to other aspiring musicians out there to publish what I like to call The British Rock Musician’s Top Three Tips For Surviving The States:

1. Beware of US Customs Offi cials

Americans are, in my experience, the friendliest people in the world. Bearing this in mind, it’s a little off -putting that the very fi rst people you meet when you arrive in the USA make Vlad The Impaler look like Sooty. And they’re particularly suspicious of musicians. I remember an unfortunate conversation that took place between a customs offi cial at Newark Airport and our innocent young sound engineer, Danny, who happened to be carrying an unusually-shaped (and frankly bomb-like) aluminium fl ight-case of mine out through security:

Offi cial: Whadda you got there, young man?Danny: What?Offi cial: That case. What is it?Danny: Um...Offi cial: I mean, PRETTY FUNNY-LOOKING SUITCASE, dontcha think?Danny: Not really.Offi cial: What’s inside it?Danny: I don’t know.Offi cial: YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT’S INSIDE IT?

Danny: No.Offi cial: How can you not know what’s inside it?Danny: It’s not mine. Somebody just gave it to me to carry through.

For reasons that I won’t enter into now, the case in question was in fact full of my pants. When I stepped in and produced a handful of boxers from inside, I could see the guy trying with all his might to understand why somebody would buy an indestructible metal box in which to transport their underwear. He was not amused.

2. Don’t underestimate the weather

American weather is ARMAGEDDON WEATHER. We had a show booked at an amphitheatre in New Jersey once that had to be postponed following a thunderstorm of such epic proportions that ornaments rattled on mantelpieces and cars rocked in the street. If you pop out for a pint of milk in high summer and become caught up in an East Coast hot-storm, there’s a very decent chance you’ll come back missing limbs. This is the reason the apocalyptic weather movie ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ was set in the States. If that fi lm had played out in the UK, it would have been three haggard dinner-ladies sitting around a kitchen table in Hull, staring out through rain-fl ecked windows across a deserted car park and going ‘Look Pat - it’s drizzlin’ again.’

3. Never, ever visit the States when you’re on a diet

This is perhaps a rather obvious point, but it’s worth mentioning anyway because when you’re on the road in between gigs you’ll fi nd it spectacularly diffi cult to avoid the lure of American fast food. And at the end of the day, why would you even want to? The Americans are, for instance, responsible for the invention of a fantastic radioactive liquid ‘cheese-food’ called Whizz that represents an important element of the legendary Philadelphia Cheesesteak sandwich. Cheese Whizz has the precise look and texture of that yellow poster paint you fi nd in primary schools. Fortunately it tastes a lot better but, self-evidently, Whizz has about as much in common with actual cheese as Paris Hilton does with the capital of France. And it’s absolutely fantastic.

I could go on, of course, but there’s simply not space here. Perhaps one day I will release a compendium. In the meantime, travel safe people and, when a sandwich-maker in Philadelphia asks you if you want that ‘wit whizz’, always say yes.

Chris plays piano in South London power-pop band The Lightyears. The Lightyears, voted the UK’s BEST POP/ROCK ACT at the Indy Awards, have played Wembley Stadium, toured across four continents, worked with Sting’s producer and starred in a T-Mobile advert. Chris is currently working on his fi rst novel, “Mockstars”. Read more of Chris’ blogs and tour diaries at: www.TheLightyears.com.

booksreview

This month’s selction of local books...

As you may know it’s Fathers’ Day on Sunday 19th June and Curiosity Bookshop in

Runcorn have a fantastic selection of books about that would make the perfect gift for

Dad. Here is just a small selection of the best...

Reelin’ in the Yearsby Mark RadcliffeIn the late 1950s, just as Mark Radcliff e was born, Britain discovered popular music. It rapidly developed into THE place to be for any young music fan. In his new book, “Reelin’ in the Years”, price £12 .99, Mark brings us a fascinating catalogue of memories through the music of the past fi fty years. Whether Dad was a rock n’ roll Teddy boy, a Sid Vicious look-alike or relaxes to the modern man’s choice of Elbow and Fleet Foxes, he will be entertained by the diversity of choice selected by this unique, popular broadcaster as he travels through fi ve musical decades of British culture.

You Know You’re Past It When...by Ben FraserNo, Dad, you’re not really past it, and just to prove it this little book won’t have a single relevant quote in it! For example, - you know you’re past it when… you feel like it’s the morning after, but there wasn’t a night before. Or… you know who shot J.R.! Or… you plan your trips around the location of the nearest public toilets. Or even…beautiful young women only think of you as their best friend’s father! So if you receive this on Father’s Day don’t worry. It’s only to demonstrate that you’re not over the hill just yet! Price £4.99.

Dad’s Witby Richard Benson‘Fatherhood is pretending the present you love most is soap-on-a-rope’ - Bill Cosby. ‘My father had a profound infl uence on me, he was a lunatic’ - Spike Milligan. They’re all diff erent, but when you’ve hijacked the car and made a hole in his wallet the size of the Grand Canyon, it’s your duty to bring Dad a little well deserved relaxation with this hilarious book. Crammed full of quips and quotes, it will remind him all over again why being a dad is the best job in the world. Price £9.99.

The Pig Manual by Liz ShanklandIf Dad wants to bring home the bacon the idea of keeping a few pigs has never been so popular, but before buying the cute little piggy he might like to learn the basics from “The Pig Manual”. This is a straightforward, no-nonsense guide to getting started - whether his interest is fi lling the freezer, starting a new business or simply taking on some charismatic new pets. Packed with colour photos and clear step-by-step text, this manual is ideal for beginners who like a new challenge and need advice on buying and rearing their fi rst pigs. Priced at £19.99.

Cheshire Railwaysby Mike HitchesWhether Dad actually remembers the excitement of great railway engines belching steam, clattering over the points and sending out ear-splitting whistles to announce departure or just wishes he had been born earlier, Cheshire Railways, price £14.99, gives a pictorial insight into the golden age of steam. Sadly, many of the county’s 20th Century lines have now gone but Crewe, at the heart of Cheshire’s railway system remains one of the most famous places for railway history as described in Mike Hitches well illustrated and informative book. Pictures include Helsby Station and the Britannia Railway Bridge over the Mersey between Runcorn and Widnes and Bank Quay Station in the 1920s.

Head for the top of Table Mountain and the Cape Peninsula spreads below you, a dramatic fi nger of land jutting out 60 km into the ocean, bristling with peaks, fringed with rugged cliff s, coves and bays and pockets of suburbia surprisingly at ease in this stunning National Park, on the very edge of Cape Town.

It’s easy to forget the courage of early explorers as they sailed down the coast to round Africa’s most south-westerly point. Battered, as it was then, by the cool waters of the Atlantic, the western shore is peppered with exclusive villas – think Madonna, Beckham or Elton John - and sandy beaches such as Camp and Hout Bay, renowned for their seafood restaurants and romantic sunsets. Inland, the road climbs over craggy mountains, skirts vineyards and riding stables and, here and there, a thatched cottage straight out of rural England, before reaching the nature reserve. Stretching from the west coast, with its rich ‘forest of kelp’, to the eastern shore and the usually calm waters of False Bay, these wild open lands are covered with fynbos, an ancient scrub with over 1000 indigenous plants, including

the bright King Protea and orange Pincushion, making the Western Cape the smallest but richest of the world’s six fl oral kingdoms. The wild life follows suite. Ramblers might spot antelopes and zebras, ostriches, 250 species of birds and Chacma baboons who have bred here for a million years. Out at sea, Southern Right whales, dolphins and seals frolic in the waves.

Whatever the season, the weather may well take a turn for the worse when you approach the Cape of Storms, so called by the Portuguese explorer Dias who discovered it in 1488. Later Vasco de Gama renamed it the Cape of Good Hope, honouring the new passage to the East and its lucrative trading route. Africa’s most south-westerly point was long thought to be the meeting place of the Indian and Atlantic oceans, but this is in fact found 150 km or so to the east, depending on prevailing winds. Standing on the legendary Cape of Good Hope is awesome but even more spectacular is its neighbour, Cape Point, on the south-eastern tip of the peninsula. Come gale force winds or driving rain, redwing starlings twitter along the path all the way to

the cliff top. Whether you walk up to the lighthouse or take the funicular, Cape Point truly rises like the end of the world, often drifting in low cloud and mist, parting now and then to reveal the last sliver of land edged with vertiginous cliff s. There is nothing ahead of you but vast churning waters melting into an ever changing sky.

After such untamed wilderness, the east coast greets you like a breath of fresh air with warm sheltered waters, sweeping sands and quiet villages with colourful harbours and cobbled streets. There’s Cork Bay, all ceramics and fi shing boats, Fish Hoek, framed by mountains or Simon’s Town remembering its illustrious visitors, Nelson and Kipling. Just minutes away, a colony of jackass penguins live on Boulders beach, digging their nests in the sand, basking on the rocks, wobbling in and out of the water, untroubled by noisy Egyptian geese and cormorants. Fluff y babies peep out of the holes, the most endearing residents on the tip of Africa.

CHILLI PRAWN AND TOMATO

LINGUINE

At this time of year you want to spend as little time as possible in the kitchen so here’s a quick and easy supper that takes less than 25 minutes to create. If you’re not too keen on chilli then replace with a fi nely chopped spring onion.

Serves 2Ready in 20 mins

350g (12oz) linguine1 tbsp olive oil1 small red chilli pepper, deseeded and fi nely chopped225g (8oz) raw, peeled tiger prawns8 sundried tomatoes in oil, sliced, plus 3-4 tbsp of the marinating oilSalt and freshly ground black pepperFew fresh basil leaves

Cook the linguine in a large pan of lightly salted, boiling water for 1. 10-12 mins or according to the packet instructions until tender but still with a little bite.

Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry the chilli for 1-2 2. mins. Add the prawns and cook over a medium-high heat for 3-4 mins, stirring all the time until they have turned from grey to pink.

Drain the pasta and add to the frying pan with the sun-dried 3. tomatoes and the marinating oil. Toss well to mix and heat through for 1-2 mins. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper and serve immediately garnished with fresh basil leaves.

Foody Facts...Linguine is often combined with seafood sauces because of the fl at shape, which allows the sauce to stay on the noodle more easily.
