Volume 7 | Issue 6 JUNE 2014

Whoa, baby! Summer iS here and in full swing at Casa de Griffin. It’s funny how every year I get so excited as sum-mer nears and then before I know it I’m up to my ears planning activities for my two future Local Life executives. Don’t get me wrong. I love having my daughters at home with me. They’re even fun to take into the office from time to time. But, make no mistake, these ladies need some activity in their lives or Mama gets no peace! Am

I crazy or didn’t we wake up as kids in the summer and leave the house right after breakfast only to swing through at lunch and come home when it got dark? I didn’t have an iPhone, iPad, or iAnything. We had sticks and random junk in the garage that required some solid imagination to utilize it’s full potential. The most complicated piece of technology was a bike, if we were lucky, and Dad had aired up the tires. We knew all of our neighbors and they looked out for us – or disciplined us when we were up to no good. Nowadays, it feels like I’m a much better parent because I can intelligently navigate an Outlook calendar, properly! If these kids only knew…

In all seriousness, I am excited. I love summer and so does my whole family. We’re sunshine and warm weather people. For the most part, we actually like hanging out with other, too, which is a bonus. We’re vacationing early this summer so that will consume a big part of our June. We’re taking the ladies to the Big Apple for a little fun in the city. Various camps will take place before and after our trip so all in all, our “together” time may not be as full as we’d like. Speaking of camps, make sure to check out our featured article this month that will be sure to assist your campers as they prep for their summer adventures. Plus, there are some helpful tips if you’re still trying to decide whether or not camp is a good idea for your family.

If you’re sticking around town this summer, I personally think there’s no greater place to be in the DFW metroplex. Our local community is loaded with fun ways to fill your days all summer long. We’ve got water parks and regular parks, hiking trails and trail rides, musical guests and guest rooms, action-packed sports leagues and thrilling literary adventures, and much, much more. We’ve got it all. I am proud to call our neck of the woods “home” and I hope you are, too. So, read on, reader! Explore the pages of Local Life and plan your summer. Then go rummage the garage or find a stick and get outside. Summer adventures await! See you out there…

I know what many parents are thinking, “Kids bring home dirt, bugs

and dirty laundry!” but when your child goes to camp,

they come home with so much more!i was Twelve when I first attended summer camp. It was a camp in Sweetwater, Texas. I had to sell a lot of cookies to pay for my week at camp, but I was excited to finally be going to a “real” camp and not just pitching a tent in the backyard. I went swimming, did arts and crafts, cooked over a campfire and had a carnival night on “the slab” (a transformed sport court) and I learned how to make friendship bracelets.

It was hot, dirty and it was the best week of my life!

After that, I knew that when I grew up, I wanted to be a camp counselor. In college a friend asked me if I wanted to work at a summer camp with her - my answer was a resounding, “YES!” That was the summer of 1999 and I have been at camp in some capacity every summer since.

Over the years my camp location has changed, my position within camp has varied and the staff and campers may change, but one thing remains constant – what I see the campers take with them when they leave.

ConfidenceFor many campers it is the first time to make decisions on their own. Campers are able to choose their activities at camp allowing them to take ownership of their experience at camp. This gives them the opportunity to set a goal of what they want to accomplish during the week. With the support of the staff and other campers they are able to work towards that goal.

CourageCamp provides a safe and supportive environment for campers to step outside their comfort zone and try new things. Camp is a place that allows a camper to think outside the box, safely try new skills and explore. This new found courage opens the door for a camper to learn how to be a friend to someone new.

LeadershipCamp provides opportunities for campers of all ages to step into leadership roles. Within a cabin campers work together to clean and aim for the clean cabin award, plan activities and make decisions on how they spend their afternoon time. All Camp Activity allows campers to get to know other ages and provide opportunities to lead through games and events.

CommunityWith no phones, televisions or video games as distractions campers are left to find someone to go play. Camp offers the opportunity to be active outside in a safe environment. During the non scheduled activity time campers can find a cabin mate to play cards, make up a game, braid hair, or shoot some hoops. Meal times provide campers and staff the opportunity to sit around the table as a camp family and share stories.

So yes, camp can be hot, dirty and buggy but camp can be a life changing experience. I see it in myself, my camp friends, and the staff but most importantly in the campers. Camp is awesome!

Guest Columnist, Misty Luttrell is a 15- year veteran and current Director of Overnight and Family Camps at Camp Fire Camp El Tesoro located in Granbury, Texas. She is a for-mer camper, counselor and camp advocate. She has directed camps and staff from Washington to Texas and continues to introduce the joys of a summer camp experience to families each and every summer!

I know everyone believes they have the best mom, but I truly do. You see I’m the baby of five and my dad died when I was only six (the others were quite a bit older). He was truly her soul mate and she was understandably devastated.

My mom had been up to that point a stay-at-home mom. Times got very hard, but she never really let us feel the pains of not enough. She did without for herself all the time, but made sure that all was normal at home. I can remember her working so hard at every fundraiser after working full time every week just so I could do everything with my high school dance team and so I could go to every church camp. She even put aside any thought of dating to take care me (not but a few years after he died and I was the only one left at home). She said she had a job to do and after we were raised she would worry about herself.

Flash forward and I’m an adult, but found myself in a volatile marriage. She dropped everything and brought my son and me back home and financed a divorce so we could be free from such a bad situation. She is my hero.

She has spent her entire life living for her children and only for her chil-dren, never for herself. And now, she is the absolute best grandmother for our children. My kids can’t seem to go more than a couple of days without seeing their Gamma.

She truly is an angel.

I know I don’t say it much but I mean it. I guess I sort of assume you already know. I also know that I didn’t understand the first time you told me. I still didn’t get it after you showed me. I still stop and think about it even today. We’re the same height but you’re the biggest man I know. I’m still scared to death of you but you’re my first call for comfort. You make me crazy but I admire no one more. Your eyes can tell an entire story without your lips ever moving. Thank you.

Thank you, for being the first person in the whole world my eyes ever saw. That’s the last time I saw you cry. Thank you, for keeping me warm in your arms and sing-ing those made-up songs every night be-fore bed. Thank you, for those kisses – all 3 billion of them! I now kiss a lot, too.

My bike was scary, but you had a solid grip on the seat that made me feel secure. Thank you. ABC’s were hard, but learning them in sign language was fun. Thanks for that. I thought I almost saw you cry as you walked behind the bus on my first day of school. Those windows were blurry, though. Thanks for giving me the courage to get on.

The curve, the lay-up, the form tackle, the juke, and the swan dive all made me cooler. I owe you big time for those. Read-ing was boring and you made it downright embarrassing by making me do it out

loud. Thank you. I still hold open doors and stand when others stand. I can’t look at anyone without looking in their eyes. Thank you.

A sock hop, really? That was a nifty little back and forth move you showed me and it paid off with Elizabeth. Cool one, Dad! I learned my lesson when I lied about that other kid. I might’ve said some things in my head after I had to go over and apolo-gize. Thank you for that. I re-learned my lesson when I lied about that party. I know I said some things as I mowed every inch of our yard 4 days in a row! But, yes, thank you.

My buddies want a rematch of our bench press competition that you creamed us in. We’re a lot stronger now. They still talk about it. Thanks for those things you said at my graduation. I was proud that day. Thanks for helping me with my bow tie last year as I got to marry my best friend. Those things are hard. Thanks for assur-ing me my life wasn’t over when we found out we were expecting. Thanks for being there when Jake was born. He’s got your nose.

In fact, I just put him down for the night. I held him for a bit and kissed him about 64 times and then just made up some ran-dom song about everything in the room we saw. He laughed. Thanks, Dad. I mean it… Thank you.

Dear Dad,

Love,Me!
