I admIt It. I have a shoppIng problem. My job forces me out and into the local market everyday, and that means frequent retail vis-its. Mix that with my lack of will power for a “great” deal and you get a lady that needs to slow her roll on the credit card swipes. Back to School is the flavor of now in most retail estab-lishments and it has me asking myself, “Where did the summer go?” Seriously. It seems like last week we were celebrating the last day of school and preparing for the wild and fun

summer ahead. Between camps, swim parks, parties, and squeezing work in between, I’m not sure the term relaxing is adequate to describe our family’s break. I do have to admit; staying busy is something that I enjoy. I don’t do lazy. I do try very hard, though, to make sure we’re not going so fast that we don’t enjoy the precious moments our family gets to spend together. Family time, to me, is the single most important thing.

OK, back to shopping. I was in a big box craft store just the other day and Christmas decorations were everywhere. Wow! While you may not be planning your epic Christmas tree just yet, it’s probably a good idea to start getting those school supplies squared away. I dropped the ball a few years back and waited until the last minute – big mistake! That “have to have” thing your kiddo desperately NEEDS is sold out and you’re to blame. Parent fail. Never again, I declared! (fingers crossed) You can cer-tainly find everything you and your child needs right here, locally. And, if you’re kiddo is struggling with the desire to return to school, like so many do, check out our featured article this month by Stribling Elementary Assistant Principal, Rebekah Hinkle. It’s full of ideas to get any kid moti-vated and help them through the upcoming school year. We’re lucky in our house because my 2 girls actually love going to school. I’m pretty sure it’s for more social reasons than academic, but hey, I’ll take what I can get!

This month is a great issue. There’s still time to squeeze in one more, quick getaway before the school year takes off. We’ve dropped some ideas for you inside from our local expert Lindsay Rose, if you’re looking to make one last memory or two for the 2014 summer. Do it if you can. As for me, I’ll be shopping. If you see me out, I’d love for you to say Hi. If you see my cart full, I’d love for you to tell me to STOP! In any case, I’d just love the chance to chat. After all, our community is the best in Texas and I’m a sucker to stop and talk about it. Enjoy these final days and I look forward to seeing you on the street!

Local Life | AUGUST 2014 5

One steamy August morning as I was opening car doors for students on the first day of school, a new 3rd grader stepped cautiously onto the sidewalk. Before he closed the door his grandmother called out to him, “Learn it all today so you won’t have to come back tomorrow!”

They exchanged grins, beginning a morning drop-off ritual that continued all year long. His grandmother’s words ensured that this student started each school day with a smile, and any teacher would tell you what a positive impact that could have for a child.

Whether our goal is a smile, academic success, or character development, our words can have great affect.

What we say to our children in the morning sets the tone for their day, and what we say in the evening colors how they reflect on their experiences. Our words shape our children’s daily outlook, and over time they mold their perceptions about school and life.

Aware of this power, intentional parents choose their words carefully for the benefit of their children. They consider the values they hope to instill and purposefully speak words that reflect those principles.

The great news for each of us is that this new school year is a fresh chance to speak

intentionally to our children and thereby shape how they think and act.

The following phrases were contributed by parents and educators from across Texas. Consider whether some of them may be worth adding to your repertoire this year.

Our children need the security and confidence found in knowing that they are loved unconditionally. We can let them know that there is nothing they could do to make us love them more or make us love them less. If our children can enter the schoolhouse each day with that assurance, they will be well prepared for both academic and character success.

This is a popular phrase c o n t r i b u t e d by parents and educators alike. When we remind our children to make good choices, we are emphasizing the fact that they are

responsible for the actions, words, and attitudes they choose. Rather than perpetuate an idea that things happen “to” our children, we can reinforce the understanding that the quality of the school day depends largely on the series of choices they make.

Students can ask questions at school for many reasons—to clarify understanding, to explore ideas, or even to advocate for themselves. We can encourage our children to increase their knowledge and think divergently by being brave enough to ask questions. Many teachers would agree with Paul Samuelson when he said, “Good questions outrank easy answers.” If I want my children to think and learn deeply, then I want them engaged enough to be asking questions.

This sentiment is frequently stated as, “Do your best.” It occurs to me though that “do your best” may emphasize outcome when what we really intend is to focus on the process and work ethic. None of us can be sure we will do our best every day, but we can always try our hardest. Consider whether emphasizing effort over outcome is important to you.

I find that my own tendency is to tell my children to “be nice,” but I’m afraid that phrase communicates that I simply want them to stay out of trouble. I’d like to set the bar higher and communicate that we value kindness, which turns their focus how their

band?”words and actions affect others.

One mother shared that she reminds her children, “It’s never okay to be mean. You can always disagree without being mean.” In the same vein, another mother tells her children each day to “be a friend to someone who needs one.” These phrases encourage our children to look outside themselves and focus on the wellbeing of those around them. Our schools are wonderful places when filled with kindness and compassion.

Reminding our children to be a light to those around them is another way to help them see a purpose outside themselves each day. We can even talk with them about our own purpose in our daily roles as adults and thereby model for them that none of us are the center of the universe. Our children are often in a position to be a blessing to both children and adults at school, and they need to know that we support them.

We have likely all asked our children the vague question, “How was your day?” and we have likely all gotten an equally vague answer. Honing in on a specific time of day has a greater likelihood of receiving a meaningful answer.

Other ways to follow up on your child’s day include asking questions such as, “What was the funniest/best/weirdest thing that happened today?” We may also find it helpful to ask questions that cycle back to the words we used as we sent them off, such as “Who were you kind to today?” or “What questions did you ask today?” Our children have much to tell us, but they may need our help in remembering details.

Our words at the end of the school day can have profound power, too. When we ask probing questions, we give our children the opportunity to reflect and process their experiences. It also gives us the opportunity to understand our children’s experience and know how next to lead.

We may even find that we need to adjust the following school day’s parting words.

Simple Summer Getaway s

Day TripsIf time just doesn’t allow for a true vacation, you can still leave town. Mineral Wells State Park is a short drive west of Fort Worth and great way to experience some real outdoor adventures through hiking, rock climbing, swimming and camping. Or, a two-hour drive north gets you double the fun with Arbuckle Wilderness and Turner Falls in Davis, Okla-homa. Arbuckle Wilderness is a lot like Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, where you

drive through the park and feed exotic ani-mals from your car, but with more fun outside the car. As a bonus, Turner Falls is directly across the highway for beautiful camping, hik-ing, swimming and sightseeing.

Texas Hill CountryWhether it’s your destination or just part of your drive, don’t rush through the beautiful Texas Hill Country. And whatever you do, please don’t consider the drive down I35 from

The end of summer is near and whether that thought is met with cheers or jeers, there’s no better time to plan a quick, last-minute getaway. We are lucky to have so many amazing destinations just a half day’s drive away…even more if you can put in a full day’s drive. From quick, day trips to several days of fun, here are a few ideas to get you started.

Page 17: Local Life Magazine, August 2014

Simple Summer Getaway s

Fort Worth to Austin a taste of the Texas Hill Country. Highways 281 and 16 deliver stun-ning views of this beautiful region. Enjoy the beauty and simplicity of the town squares on your drive, check out a winery, visit an or-chard and just experience the greatness of Texas. You can do many of these things a short drive from Fredericksburg, which is a great place to stay, but there are many great Texas towns like Bandera, Kerrville, Boerne and Blanco that are worthy of a visit.

AustinOur state capital has tons to do for every age, from amazing restaurants and bars to wonder-ful Texas history and just plain fun. Tour the city on an electric bike from Rocket Electrics, check out the goings on at Zilker Park, enjoy a meal from a food truck—and not the scary kind—or just eat or drink your way through the whole city (the Austin Eats Food Tour is a great way to do this). And of course, don’t forget to tour the capital!

San AntonioWhether you choose to stay near the River-walk and enjoy delicious food, shopping and sightseeing (remember the Alamo?) or opt for a swimmer’s and golfer’s paradise in one of the resorts located just outside of town, San Anto-nio is always a great getaway. For hotels on a budget, stay farther away from the attractions or spend a little more to be right on the Riv-erwalk. If pounding the pavement isn’t what you have in mind, there are several amazing, family-friendly resorts in the area. The Hyatt Hill Country Resort & Spa, La Cantera Hill Country Resort and the more luxurious JW Marriott are all on an expansive property with extensive water attractions, delicious food op-tions and plenty of other entertainment.

Hot Springs, ArkansasIf getting out of Texas is the main objective or if you’re looking for a more therapeutic getaway, Hot Springs, Arkansas is just a little over five hours from Fort Worth. Located in the Ouachita Mountains, it is called America’s first national park with lakes, spas and parks galore. Experience the healing powers of the

hot springs or treat yourself to a more tradi-tional spa day.

Also consider…If you can put in a full day’s drive west, there is a ton to see (ie. real mountains) in Big Bend Country. Otherwise, hit the beach at the Texas coast. From Galveston to Corpus Christi to South Padre Island, you could ask ten different Texans about their favorite Texas beach town and you could get ten different answers. All are within a half to a full day’s drive from here.

Are you sufficiently inspired? Pack your bags and hit the road!

Budget-Friendly, Last-Minute Travel TIPS

• Don’t be picky. This doesn’t mean staying at a two-star hotel when you’re accustomed to four-star amenities, it simply means you might not get to stay at the specific hotel you have in mind.

• Be spontaneous. Pick a weekend, and about two weeks before, start looking at airline sites from last-minute travel deals. It’s a great way to discover a new favorite place farther away from home.

• Trivago.com. It’s a great resource for finding hotel deals. Save yourself a lot of bleary-eyed In-ternet searching and let Trivago search deals on hundreds of travel websites for you.

• Travel midweek. This is definitely true for air travel, slightly less true for hotels.

Lindsay Rose is a wife, mother of two, free-lance writer and maker of a mean batch of chick-en enchiladas. When she’s not cooking, planning a party, or shopping for the best possible deal on whatever it is, she’s writing about it.

Welcome Back!Texas Health Huguley Hospital Fort Worth South welcomes back Mike Bismar, M.D., an award-winning gastroenterologist.

“After living abroad for three years, it was time for me to come home to the people and the community that I enjoyed serving in the past,” said Dr. Bismar.

In 2004, Dr. Bismar founded the Gastroenterology Center at Texas Health Huguley Hospital, where for seven years he treated inpatients and outpatients for conditions of the digestive tract. He’s just returned from three years of teaching and practicing medicine in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
