EvEr bEEn happy-sad? Pretty sure that’s the only way to describe my feeling toward the summer break right now. It’s the whole “hate to see you go, but love to watch you leave” thing. I’m happy for school to start so we can get back to some sort of normal schedule, but sad that I have to wake up at the crack of dawn to get these two princesses ready for the day. I’m happy that my youngest is starting kindergarten, but super-sad my little baby is growing up. I’m definitely
happy that the fall will bring some cooler temps, but then again I sure do love the sunshine. I suppose this is why we have the changing seasons. It keeps the things we love fresh without overstaying their welcome.
It’s time to transition. Summer is so last month! August is funny in that summer is ending and fall is beginning. It’s a sort of hybrid month, I guess. For many, it means back to school. You have a few precious days remaining to get all of your fun in before its back to the daily grind. But there’s so much stuff to do to get ready! How can I prepare and still enjoy the last few days? Plan and prioritize, mister! Seriously. Take a day to plan this month out. It’ll help a ton in the long run and will definitely reduce any unwanted stress. Local Life is going to try to help, too. We’ve got some great tips inside on just how and what to do if you’re staring at another school year. We’ll also post tips on our Facebook page as the date draws closer.
Speaking of Facebook… Congratulations to our grand prize winner last month Jordan DeWald! And thanks to everyone who became fans and/or entered their codes online. Look for another Facebook drawing real soon. Of course, you’ve got to become a fan to play. Besides, we just love to hear from each of you about what’s going on in our local community. Hope to see you all there soon.
Next month we’re looking forward to our popular medical edition. But, this month it’s all about that one last hurrah and back-to-school. So, flip through and find out how these great businesses can help you plan a stress-free hybrid-month. It’ll make your happy outweigh your sad! Enjoy.

Go Out With a Bang! We’re not suggesting an 8-day European cruise, but plan one last special event with the whole family to end the summer with a pop. Chances are you’ve al-ready taken a vacation. You still want to end on a high note. Take the kids to the water park or a day at the lake. Go camping for the weekend. Or, Mom and Dad can simply take a personal day during the week and just spend the day hanging out as a family. Play games or sports in the morning, picnic for lunch, and maybe a little sprinkler time in the afternoon. Remember: no chores, just play.
Dress for SuccessThe way a child “thinks” they look is important. Money is tight and retail prices keep rising, but try to find the budget to get your kiddo some new duds that’ll pull out that inner pride. I’m not suggesting de-signer labels or a whole new wardrobe, but get them some new stuff. The earlier you start the better. (That means now!) Living in Texas is a plus since the heat sticks around well into the fall. Closeout specials on summer gear are in abundance right now and many can serve as school clothes through November. Many schools in the area maintain a uniform policy. You can find fantastic deals at Kid to Kid in Burleson. They’ve got new and gently worn clothing. Let some-one else pay full retail for the slightly used uni’s you can get at tremendous discounts. After all, at the rate our kids grow, most clothes only fit for 6 months in
the early years. And lastly, let them pick some of it out on their own. They’ll be proud of their choices and it works wonders for their morale.
Get Your “Do” DoneA good haircut is like new wheels on a car. It just looks cooler! Your kids will think so, too. Even if you normally cut their hair they’ll find it a nice treat to have someone else cut it. Make a hair appointment with a pro about a week before the first day of school. One week growth will make for the perfect length and a great grand entry. Check out the pro’s at The Ritz in Old Towne Burleson or Rejuvenation Ranch in Crowley next to Gold’s Gym. Male or female, these gals can really manicure a mane!
Routine, Routine, RoutineWith classrooms comes classwork. And homework is, well, like clockwork! It’s important to start slowly working your child back into the habit of routine(s). Try to pencil in some light reading throughout the week. This gets their brains working again. The local Public Libraries are actually great places to beat the heat. Let your child pick the topic or book. It’s about the reading, not the learning at this point, so keep it fun. Writing is also something children rarely do over the break. A couple of paragraphs a week is fine to get them back on track. Board games like Balderdash
6 A U G U S T 2 0 1 1 w w w . L o c a l L i f e T X . c o m
are also creative ways to get them writing without the feeling of boot camp. Finally, a couple of weeks prior to school starting, it’s a good idea to get a little stricter on chores. Not so much Drill Sergeant, but definitely introduce firmer accountability.
Wake Up!Yes, it’s time to dust off that alarm clock. If you don’t start slowly working in earlier mornings you just may walk into someone that looks like your child but more closely resembles a crazy lunatic on the first morn-ing they have to see what 6:30 AM looks like. No-body wants that! A few weeks out, don’t allow them to snooze any later than 8:30 AM. As it gets closer, move “wake up time” earlier and earlier. Never be afraid to bribe them with breakfast. A little more work for you, but worth it in the long run. Want to make it more fun? Here’s an idea we really like: One week before school starts, start a Social Rise-n-Shine. Set it up with friends and neighbors beforehand. For 5 days, you’ll choose a different driveway to meet for breakfast. Invite as many as you can to join your So-cial “awakening”. A little creative cooking, or even better – the doughnut shop, is a great incentive to get to that driveway at 7:00 AM. Have some quick chow and let the kids hang for a half hour while you and the other parents knock back some coffee
and gossip about the week ahead. This is great for any age, even teens. Just be ready for the teens to have a “no parents allowed” rule. Go with it. At least they’re waking up!
Look AheadPlan some time to sit down with your children in-dividually to talk about the upcoming school year – kindergarten through collegiate applies here. First, discuss what they expect from the year. You may need to guide this conversation a little but make sure it’s about what they want. Then talk about what you would like to see them accomplish. Ask them if there’s anything you can help them with this year to make their lives a little easier. (Caution: A new corvette does not qualify as making life easier, but they’ll ask anyway.) If you discover the two of you have some similarities in expectation then try to put it to a goal. Tell them you’ll help make that goal a reality if they’d like. Planning is always better than reacting. Plus, it’s just great groundwork for their lives ahead.
Eliminate DistractionsHousework, yard work and other chores are the last thing you want to be worrying about during the chaos of week 1. If you have the time, knock these types of activities out before school begins. Starting the week with clean laundry, a spotless house, and a finely manicured yard will most certainly free your spirit. If time is sensitive, fly through the pages of Lo-cal Life to find a local expert who’s ready to tackle the task for you. The first week is about adaptation, not procrastination.
While I’m not promising following these steps will ensure a perfect start to the school year, I can definitely promise it will help. Often I hear from friends how much they dread the new school year. I really hope you don’t look at it that way. As it is every year, it’s just something new to the routine. Take it as an opportunity to draw closer to your family. A little preparation and planning can really go a long way. Now, go hug those babies. You may be ready to kick ‘em out of the house after a long, hot summer. But you’re sure going to miss ‘em when they’re gone!

ACritical Choice
No one chooses tohave a heart attack. But you can choose when and where
to begin your recovery.
If a heart attack sends you to an emergency room, would you prefer that yourblockage be opened on site? Some emergency rooms send you by ambulance
to a different facility miles away.
In 2010, 100% of Huguley’s heart attack patients met the goal of havingblood flow reestablished faster than the national standard.
–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Because everyminute can impact howmuch heart muscle is saved, choose care right here—not miles away. And start care right now—not
after critical minutes are spent transferring to another hospital.
Physicians are independent practitioners and are not employees or agents of the hospital.

At Texas Health Harris Methodist Outpatient Center Burleson,
preventing breast cancer is a priority. That’s why we offer
digital mammography services. If you’re 40 or older, an annual
mammogram can help detect issues early. Unlike many facilities,
we use MammoPad® technology to make your mammogram as
comfortable as possible. The soft foam pad creates a warm, softer
surface between you and the system. So make a mammogram part
of your year, because peace of mind is something we all treasure.
