I am happy. Not just your run-of-the-mill, found a five in my pants pocket, kind of happy — truly happy. First off, it’s Sprummer! That little sweet spot time of the year between Spring and Summer where the weather is just awesome. This month brings Mother’s Day. While I do miss mine dearly, I’m also reminded how fortunate I am to have two beautiful little girls that call me Mom to cherish daily.

They are my world. Being a mom is one of those rare things that requires so much from you 24-7, yet, I feel so blessed to fill the role. My mother and I shared a unique bond that I certainly hope to have with my daughters. They also shared a special bond with my mom and I love that. We were lucky because we knew how much she loved us all and we were able to tell her what she meant to us on a regular basis. So, even though she was taken quickly, there was nothing left unsaid. That makes me happy. Whether you’re fortunate in relationship like me or not, the message here is to give your mom an extra hug this year. Pick up the phone a couple more times than you normally do. Say what needs to be said. You’ll be glad you did.

I’m also happy with this month’s edition of Local Life. I love the cover! Kristen Bohon (our cover model) was a Mom-to-be in last year’s Mother’s Day issue. In between then and now, her precious daughter, Ava, was voted this year’s Beautiful Baby in our recent annual contest. Very cool that we got to put them on the cover. Therefore, happy. Check out the wonderful deals and savings inside and take note of all of the positive that lives in your world. It’s just no fun dwelling on the negative. Find your own blessings. Find your happy. Is IT JusT me or is celebrating Mother’s Day far more hectic and difficult than Father’s Day? Granted, moms tend to be more diffi-cult to please than dads—heck, give my dad a beer, golf on TV, and food on the grill and he’d consider the day just about perfect. But, events like proms and graduations also go-ing on around Mother’s Day Weekend make celebrating Mom an extra challenge. So to infer that you can make Mom’s day great without really trying would be doing us all a disservice. With Mother’s Day right around the corner, it’s time to start making prepara-tions…well, yesterday.

First, if you’re taking Mom to brunch, lunch or dinner at a popular place, make reser-vations. Not that she doesn’t love getting to spend extra time with her children, but spend-

ing two hours waiting for a table and gnaw-ing on endless baskets of chips and salsa is not what she had in mind. Additionally, remem-ber that Mother’s Day is when you celebrate it. Typically, we all have a few mothers (wife, mom, mother in law, grandma) to celebrate, and to try and spend time with each of them in one day will likely leave everyone feeling fraz-zled and a bit cheated. There’s nothing wrong with celebrating with one side of the family on Saturday and another on Sunday, or a differ-ent weekend altogether. And if you’re having a hard time selling your mom on this idea, ex-plain to her that this way, she’ll get more time with you and an even better celebration.

Now let’s talk about gift-giving. Start by ask-ing yourself, “What kind of gift recipient is my mom?” You probably already know

this from years of birthdays and holidays, but if you’re not sure you’ve been getting a sincere reaction from Mom, maybe it’s time to rethink this point. Is she the type to give hints and ex-pect you to pick up on them? Does she prefer a more thoughtful, sentimental or homemade gift? Or does she just tell you what she’d like? If so, you’re lucky.

When you go shopping, give it some thought beforehand. A gift selected after hours of aimless wandering through a mall is typically pretty easy to spot. Your mom likely has a favorite store. Start there and if nothing jumps out at you, go for the gift card. I per-sonally love gift cards, but some Moms may find them a bit impersonal, so consider that before you buy. There are several great, local boutiques owned by people right in our area

with tons of cute, unique gifts that Mom would love. You can even find a coupon for one of them right in this magazine.

Are you last-minute shopper? Let’s face it, we’ve all been guilty of this on occasion, and for things like flowers, it’s unavoidable, just try not to make it look like your gift was pur-chased ten minutes ago. Get rid of all receipts, price tags and store sacks before presenting your treasure to Mom. I know this seems to-tally obvious to most of us, but well, I still see it a lot (ahem, SONS). When it comes to cards, don’t forget to include some kind of sweet mes-sage with your signature. “Love, Scott” sim-ply won’t do.

Many thoughts come to my mind as I contemplate the person I want to be to my grandchildren. Loving, kind, thoughtful and a person of integrity are just a few character traits I want them to see in my life. I want them to know they can always come to me with any problems and I will help to the best of my ability. I will not be judgmental or try to run their lives but will offer wise advice. Children are a precious gift from God and being a grandmother is an awesome privilege and responsibility.

Yes, I am a woman and a mother and I am

freely admitting that we can be difficult to

please. You can’t give Mom the celebration she

deserves without putting in a little thought and

effort. Seriously, have you ever seen the card aisle at Walgreens on Mother’s Day weekend? Your actual mother does not want a card that says, “You’ve Been Like a Mother To Me,” and homemade cards aren’t as cute when you’re 32 and have no crafting skills. I realize that most of my advice is hardly groundbreak-ing, yet year after year, we continue to throw together Mother’s Day plans the day before. Plan your day, think about what would make your mom happy, and put that plan into ac-tion now.

Burleson Pediatric Dentistry Burleson Pediatric Dentistry has been treating and educating local kiddos for five years strong now. Their team is comprised of four doctors and a fun staff of seven ladies. Believe it or not, they are one of the only dentistry offices in the area that is dedicated to children only, and let me tell you, they do a wonderful job of it! My daughters have had nothing but great experiences and actually look forward to their visits. My youngest “professional candy eater” has had three cavities filled, three crowns and zero tears! That just goes to show how good they are at what they do.

The office is perfectly set up for the little ones. They have a fun waiting room with tons of toys and even an old-school video game. While your child is getting their teeth cleaned they can watch a movie to help keep calm and occupied. They also get to wear some pretty sweet sunglasses to keep the bright light out of their eyes. When the visit is over they’ll get some coins to use in their prize-filled vending machines. You know every kid loves that! Every member of the staff is great with kids and does their best to make it a comfortable, calm and more importantly, a fun visit.

This way, any developing problems may be detected, treated early, or prevented. It also helps them get acclimated with the office and dentist so they won’t be anxious when it’s time for a check up. It’s just makes sense. The earlier your child starts regular dental check-ups, the quicker they’ll be on their way to maintaining a beautiful and healthy (although sometimes toothless) smile!
