Gary FienbergTrumpet SoloistGary Fienberg is Assistant Professor of Trumpet, Coordinator of Brass Studies and Jazz Ensemble Director at TCNJ. His performing experiences range from the great concert halls of Europe to the orchestra pits of Broadway. His performance interests cover the complete range of possibilities for a contemporary trumpeter in classical, jazz and commercial music. He has performed with such artists as Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles,

The Manhattan Transfer, Natalie Cole, Barry Manilow, The Temptations, Chet Baker, Toots Thielmanns and many others.

During a nine year residence in Europe, he worked for all of the major broadcasting companies in both the Netherlands and in Germany, performed at the acclaimed North Sea Jazz Festival, and worked with both the Big Band and SymphonicOrchestra of the Nord Deutsche Rundfunk (North German Radio Orchestra).

In 1992, Dr. Fienberg was appointed Director of Jazz Ensembles at Carnegie Mellon University and then served as Assistant Head of the School of Music from 1998-2001. During this time he was a member of the acclaimed River City Brass Band, performing both the Solo Cornet and Flugelhorn positions.

Dr. Fienberg earned his Master’s degree at Carnegie Mellon where he was a student of Anthony Pasquarelli, and his Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology at the University of Pittsburgh.

The College of New Jersey BandsComposed entirely of undergraduate students, TCNJ Bands encompasses concert ensembles, pep bands, jazz ensembles, and a proliferation of smaller ensembles. Among the many composers and conductors who have added their names to the list proclaiming the Ensemble are James Curnow, Norman Dello Joio, Alfred Reed, Bruce Yurko, Vaclav Nelhybel, Jack Stamp, Warren Barker, Timothy Broege, Clark McAlister, Claude T. Smith, and David Uber, to name a few. Of a performance of his Dance Movements, Philip Sparke (celebrated English composer) declared, “I listened with immense pleasure to your performance. It really is very fine indeed...the third movement has an enormous nobility about it and is the best I’ve heard it performed.” American Record Guide, America’s critical guide to professional recordings, praised both the Wind Ensemble and Dr. Silvester’s work. The Wind Ensemble exudes “a feeling of complete confidence and competence...this reading won me over. Conductor William Silvester’s sense of shape, space, and balance makes something fresh and new.... All the more impressive.” The Wind Ensemble has recorded CDs for Alfred Reed, Kalmus (MASTERS) Publishing, Warren Barker, and Mark Recording Service as well as several additional commercial CDs.

In recognition of its superb performance record, the Wind Ensemble was invited to join the world-renowned Russian Army Band in 1998 for a concert tour of standing-room-only performances throughout England and Wales. Appearances at such prestigious halls as the Royal Opera House (Trent), Royal Ballet (York), and Europe’s newest, the 2,500 seat Bridgewater Hall (Manchester), among others, are illustrative of the unprecedented success of this tour. And again in 2002, the Wind Ensemble traveled to Austria and Germany at the invitation of the Heads of State of Vienna, Linz, and Salzburg. Standing-room only concerts were given throughout and in the world renowned Konzerthaus (Vienna), where the Vienna Philharmonic performs, the ensemble was called upon for 45-minutes of encores.

These College-funded tours exemplify the College’s commitment to provide accelerated educational experiences beyond the norm while simultaneously exhibiting just how accomplished its students really are. These tours and the extensive recordings underscore some of the reasons why TCNJ Bands has grown in national and international prominence.
