    Parish Plan:

the end of the beginning!Aptly for Remembrance Day, Churchill's well-knownwords from 1942 set the tone of the public meeting on 11November at which the Parish Plan was presented to theresidents of Willingham in a packed school hall. Theevening was a celebration of the completion of the Plan, representing the Views of over 60% of the village, butalso a first step towards its implementation. Following ashort presentation by members of the Plan committeethere was a brief discussion on the list of actions in the

Plan, the main focus being on traffic problems, includingthe need for a bypass, weight restrictions on the B1050 toEarith and safer cycling. The lack of a youth club and theimpact of Northstowe were also raised. Parish andDistrict Councillors were present to listen to thecomments and answer questions, and so was AndyCampbell, the Managing Director of Stagecoach in

Cambridge. Also present were representatives from theprimary school, medical practice, library, churches andmany of the village clubs and organisations. Livelydiscussion continued informally, aided by wine providedby Willingham Co-op, and a superb cake, made by JulieFerguson.

Earlier in the day a steady stream of people hadvisited a display at the Three Tuns and indicated theirpriorities for the action plan — see next month'sWillingham News for more details. The public meetingmarked the end of the task that the original Parish Plancommittee had set itself, and the members stood down.A new committee will be set up to oversee the

implementation of the actions, and several people puttheir names forward at the meeting. It has a veryimportant job to do: all the work put into the productionof the Plan will have been in vain if it just gathers dust onshelves.

The actions can be split into two categories: those thatmust be done by the relevant local authority where themain role of the committee is to press for action andmonitor progress, and those that villagers can dothemselves, such as putting on community events. Manyvolunteers agreed to help. The Plan was presented to theParish Council on 5 November, to South CambridgeshireDistrict Council, on 14 November and CambridgeshireCounty Council on 21 November. They will all have a keyrole to play. The members of the original Plancommittee, and the 100 or so volunteers who hadcontributed to the Plan through deliveringquestionnaires, inputting data and drafting chapters,

People attendingare invited to makea donation of £2,which goes towardsequipment. Theyhave raised nearly£500 in the first

    year, and are

planning to buy amusic system forthe Social Club, which will simplifythe complexprocessof setting things upeach month.

Steve is a professional musician, with wideinternational experience. He began his professionalcareer as a vocalist, then learnt to play harmonica atwhat is now Anglia Ruskin University — taught by thegreat harmonica player, Larry Adler. He lectures, andteaches privately, as well as performing. He hastoured the world with his own band.

Andy was a keen amateur keyboard player, runninga computer business — until, on New Year's Eve 2000he suffered strokes, and then, three years ago, lost hissight. He asked Steve to teach him to play theharmonica, and then formed his own jazz band. Thismeets on the firstSunday of the month, and, like theJam Night, is raising money for equipment.

They collaborate in running the Jam Nights. Steveis the musical director, who meets and greets peopleas they come in, discusses their particular interests —

    'Ian at the controls'

and makes sure everyone has a chance to play. Hisaim is to make sure the evening is one of contrasts, for example with jazz alongside Irish folk music.Andy looks after the financial side, and acts as the'doorman' for the events. Lindy, Andy's wife, servesas the company secretary, and John Sibley, thepresident of the Social Club, is a 'silent partner' in thegroup.

How do Steve and Andy sum up the first year ofthe Jam Nights? They have done well at providingopportunities for disabled people. They haveencouraged at least a dozen performance debutants. They have brought together professional musicians, teachers and complete beginners.

Their long—term goal is to 'provide more of thesame'. They are providing music for the Club and forVillage functions, and they hope to be able to directperformers to other possible outlets, such aschurches and the school. Mick Venning, of theOrchard Cottage recording studio, will be offering aprize for a recording in January 2009.

They currently have a mailing list of 100, and havea website:

http://www.myspace.com/willinghamjamcluband are planning to create, through My Space, an on-line community of musicians. Steve, who has twoyoung children, is thinking of starting a music clubfor under four-year—olds.

Meanwhile, he says: 'We'd like more musiciansand more audience. And we need more volunteers tohelp. Oh, and we could do with a keyboard and adrum kit'.

The intermediate troupe '(aged 8-13 years)performed a five minute dance routinechoreographed by Sara Johnson. The seniors (aged14-17 years) did a staggering seven - minuteperformance — a real test of stamina - choreographedby Ashley Borland and Sara Johnson. Several of theyoung dancers performed solos or duets and EmmaMaris and Jamie Foster won a bronze medal for theirModern Dance duet.

The event took place at the Disney Dome. It takesreal guts to perform in front of professional judges on astage bigger than the hall they rehearse in! Ladybirdsaid: 'We hear a lot of negativity about children andteenagers, but these young people have given up muchof their summer holiday and every Saturday morning torehearse. Every child has brought home a medal! Theyhave worked really hard and I am very, very proud ofthem'.

The coach driver who spent the full four days with theparty praised the teenagers for being the most polite andwell mannered group he had spent time with and hebelieved they represented the dance school andWillingham impeccably.
