The City of WIlliston in North Dakota asked for a new maintenance facility with two story offices, vehicle storage, repair and wash bays. Katie coordinated the internal project team, managed meetings with the client, and provided construction administration services. During design, she detailed several building components including stairs, elevator, skylight, front desk, and other public spaces. For project team coordination, she scheduled and led weekly coordination meetings and managed responsibilities and delegation of sheets to team members. She managed the furniture bid package and document coordination with the contractor with a GMP contract.
Williston Public Works FacilityKodet Architectural Group, 2018-2019
Assistant to the Project Manager, internal team coordination, designer and detailer with Kodet Team.
Central Lutheran Church located in downtown Minneapolis, asked for a new addition in the place of three 1960’s additions. The new addition hosts a fellowship hall, kitchen, displaced population services, office, and fireside room. Katie designed and detailed the interior woodwork, doors, windows, and casework for the front desk, gallery hall, and fireside room. The front desk is centrally located for convenience and has direct view of every entrance to the building. Stone triglyphs were salvaged from the demolished buildings and featured at and behind the front desk.
Central Lutheran Church AdditionKodet Architectural Group, 2016-2017
Interior design and detailing of church addition in collaboration with Kodet Team.
Pine River Backus High School desired a more secure front office while opening up the entry to be more welcoming. Katie assisted with detailing bullet proof glass and receiving window. She also designed and detailed all cabinetry within the office and break area. This included two custom desks with adjustable height surfaces. The panel attached to the adjustable height surface maintains privacy for the administrative team. The school was very pleased with the results and continues to work with Kodet on master planning.

HCPA’s Phase IV addition included purchasing a large lot of land for an air-supported dome, parking ramp, sports facility, and future track.
Katie designed and detailed the sports facility building with restrooms, concession, storage, and locker rooms. The building has a precast panel facade with a metal panel feature at the front entry to direct parents and students. She coordinated with dome supplier and engineers to design the footings and storage building for the dome during the off-season. The building has an airlock entrance to the dome.

Plumber House Elevation
Plumber House Floor Plan
MacDonald & Mack Architects was hired to render 21 houses for Larry Millett’s book, Minnesota’s Own. I drafted each house elevation and floor plan from a combinations of existing documents, site measurements, and photographs. I printed the linework onto watercolor paper and hand rendered each in watercolor. After scanning the watercolors, I used photoshop to refine details and add shading. I processed the drafting lines through AutoDesk Impressions to add style and overlaid it over the watercolor. The project taught me about process and working with an editor’s deadlines.

After 75 years, the Black Hills Passion Play gave its last performance on it’s unique 500 foot stage. The Immersive Theater Camp will revitalize this outdoor amphitheater without detracting from the historic character of the site. The proposed structures will be built into the hillside on the north end of the site, blending into the landscape from the audience’s viewpoint. The site design reverses the roles of performer and spectator, following the Passion Play tradition of local volunteers joining in each performance.

The series of interlocking cabins mimic the panoramic historic stage. The ambiguity of forms juxtaposes the relationship between shelter and landscape. The forms are simple, yet playful. Each component plays a part in this production, yet the pieces work together as a chorus and the performance sprawls across the hillside

The structures are concrete to minimize maintenance and maximize durability. As the hillside erodes, the structures will be further embedded into the site. The thick walls will act as natural buffers to the extreme climates of South Dakota. The green roofs blend the cabins into the hillside. They will also cool the cabins during hot summer days and hold heat through the cool nights. Large window openings bring the surrounding landscape into the spaces just as the historic theater borrows a local mountain as its scenic backdrop. The bunk beds are built from locally grown ponderosa pine. The simple offset geometries echo the interwoven paths of the site plan.

First Floor of Residents
Rendered into urban fabric
This project grew from a study of interwoven programs in downtown Minneapolis. Along Nicollet Mall, the tower of live/work lofts juts into view. The base floors of the building house commercial businesses while the main building consists of multi-bedroom apartments. The live/work tower attempts to pull away from the horizontal skyways and sidewalks. It offers a vertical street where residents may enter on the second level of the two story loft while customers arrive on the first. The live/work lofts are open to the public during each residence’s business hours.

Drawing is a way to actively observe a new environment. These drawings explore the culture and architecture of Istanbul. The observational studies culminated into a hybrid drawing mapping a section of Istanbul where my drawing partner and I spent most of our time. The Galata bridge drawing merges elevation, section, plan, and predecessors of the Galata Bridge in order to comprehensively express prominent characteristics of this bridge that unites two sections of Istanbul across the Golden Horn.

(below) Digitally predicting the curvature of the voussoirs to produce templates for 7 voussoirs in the cow horn arch, each with 4 1/2” faces and increasing 25.61˚ from point.
Working with aerated concrete blocks, we tested three cow horn arches in one week. Two arches stand in place by only gravity and friction (above left and above right). One arch (left) could not stand due to the steep angle that minimized the contact points between the voussoirs. Many of the arches were meant to be strengthened by compressive forces. With the appropriate exterior loads, the third arch may stand.
Through drawings and model studies, our class analyzed and rebuilt the masonry work of Rafeal Guastavino. This one-fourth scale irregular elliptical arch is based on the NY Municipal Building. We were surprised by its ease of construction and strength of the thin and shallow arch.

In five days our Catalyst class designed and installed the catenary geometry above. The above design began on Monday as seven dots, using Rhino and Grasshopper we designed catenary curves and divided the surfaces into hexagons to be cut then glued together. On Tuesday we voted to build the design of Kristen Salkas and Tia Bell. On Wednesday, the digital components were ready to be cut on a CNC router and lazer cutter. We glued the geometry together on Thursday in time for a Friday review. This project was accomplished through teamwork and innovative fabrication process made possible by Grasshoppper plug-ins.
