Dear Wilton Elementary Families:

All of the flu season predictions almost make it seem like no one should leave their house during flu season. While I know that is simp-ly not possible, or practical, there are a few things that can be done to help minimize the spread of the flu (and colds). The most effec-tive way to stop the spread of germs is with good old-fashioned hand washing. If soap is not available, using a hand sanitizer is an effec-tive alternative. It is also wise to teach children to sneeze into their elbow, instead of their hand.

If your child is sick, the CDC recommends that you wait to send your child back to school until they have a 24 hour period of no vomiting and a 24 hour fever free period without fever reducing medication. The more sick children that can be held out of school while they are sick, the less sick days all of our students and staff will have to expe-rience.

Before and After School Safety:

The roads to the north and south of the elementary building are EX-TREMELY busy in the mornings and after school. We do have crossing guards on the south side of the building to help students safely cross to school. Students that are walking to school should cross the street at the designated cross walk areas. If you are dropping off your child (ren), please do so in the cross walk areas. Have them exit your vehicle on the passenger side of the street and head to the nearest cross walk areas. Please refrain from letting them out as you wait to get to the crosswalk.

Leaving School

There are times when after school arrangements for your children change during the school day. This can be weather related or involve some other circumstances. If you know in advance that your children will do something different after school, please send a note with all of your children. This will alert the teachers to the change and ensure that we get your children started in the correct direction after school. If during the school day your plans for after school change, call the elementary office. We will pass the change along to the chil-dren’s teachers.

If the school does not have a note about the change, or has not received a phone call, the children will be sent home via their regular arrangement.

Wilton Elementary School “Making a positive difference in the lives of our students.”

Fall Weather

With the changing of the leaves, it signals the approach of cooler weather. The best advice when dressing your children for school is to dress them in layers. It is not uncommon for a warm after-noon to follow a chilly morning. Also, as much as I disliked my mom putting my name on every-thing-it was and still is a good idea. We have many items al-ready in the Lost and Found box that have an owner, but no name to return it to.

Before School Supervision

Supervision before school starts at 7:45 a.m. and ends after school at 3:15 p.m. Children playing on the equipment or just “hanging out” at school outside of these times are NOT super-vised. Students who are in-volved with SuperStart or that eat breakfast, may enter the building at 7:50 a.m. All remain-ing students are allowed to enter after the 8:00 a.m. bell.

Fall Conferences

In a few days, all of the elemen-tary families will be taking part in Parent/Teacher Conferences. You should have received notifi-cation from your child’s teacher (s) about the date and time that you are scheduled. If the date and time do not work for you, please contact your child’s teacher so that you can work out an alternate date and time.

Parent/Teacher confer-ences continue

what we started last year by being on consecutive Wednes-day’s instead of back to back nights. We will have it on Wednesday, October 5 & 12th from 3:30 until 7:00. We will be running a normal day releasing at 3:00 both days. The fall conferences will have all of the 7-12 teach-ers in the auditorium at tables. You can talk with each teach-er when they are free.

October is also when the first quarter ends. It ends on the 21st of October. I consider the first quarter the most important quar-ter of the year. Sta-tistics have shown

that a good start makes for a great year academically. Slow starts make for a tough year. Digging out of a hole is a lot harder than maintaining a good grade. Please be diligent in check-ing our online grad-ing system & asking questions of our staff. We expect grades to be updat-ed at a minimum every two weeks. If you have concerns, please call the teacher.

October is a great month. The weath-er change makes the school more comfortable & the briskness seems to put some pep into everyone’s step. Believe it or not, a lot of our fall sports start to wind down. As they finish up,

we also start a lot of neat things here at school. Jr. High sports are transi-tioning to winter sports. Variety Show is beginning practices, the Marching Band has the Festival of Bands and concert band is around the corner. And with the changing of first quarter to second quarter, students & teachers are busy finishing off work for their classes.

Enjoy the final days of cool weather be-fore the snow starts flying!

“Worrying about tomorrow’s prob-lems, stalls to-day’s solutions.”

TRANSCRIPT REQUESTS

There are two types of senior transcripts:

Official Transcripts must be sent out directly from the high school office. Your ACT, SAT, and ITED scores are in-cluded with your official transcript. COLLEGE ADMISSION TRANSCRIPTS are sent directly from the HS Office to the college where you are applying. These are official transcripts, and must include a School Official’s Signature and an embossed WHS School Seal. (They cannot be given to students, except for specific scholarships that require official transcripts. They are then placed in an envelope with a signed seal).

Unofficial Transcripts cannot be used for college admission, the NCAA Clearinghouse, or NAIA eligibility applica-tions. These SCHOLARSHIP TRANSCRIPTS can usually be stapled onto the scholarship form by the student. These copies are given to you and are stamped "Issued to Student". These are NOT used for college admissions, only for scholarships. Please read the scholarship instructions carefully to determine which type of transcript you need.

See Deb Brenner or Jill Proctor in the High School Office for transcript requests or questions. If you need a copy of your courses taken and grades earned for ACT registration, Ms. Paper will print your Credit Sum-mary for you.

COLLEGE CAMPUS VISITS

As outlined in the WHS Student Handbook, student visits to college campuses must be arranged through the Guidance Center in order for them to be excused absences. If a college admissions office or a college coach arrang-es the visit with a student, it must be cleared through the Guidance Office and the parents before it is an excused absence. There can be athletic recruiting issues and school absence issues that need to be avoided. Refer to the Student Handbook or see Ms. Paper for more information.

FYI for JUNIORS

PSAT TESTS: The PSAT Tests will be given on October 12th from 8:15-Noon at the Community Center. Cost is $14 per student and must be paid to Ms. Paper (checks payable to Wilton Schools) by October 7th . Students who have signed up and paid are to report to the Community Center at 8:15 that morning. Juniors received information in Eng-lish III and AP English classes September 21 & 22. It is the only way to qualify for National Merit and some other na-tional corporation scholarships.

ACT TEST CALENDAR: We recommend that juniors plan on taking the ACT test in February, April, or June of their junior year. (They can retest if they desire in September, October or December of their senior year.) Students can register online, using a parent credit card with permission, at www.actstudent.org . They create their own account and password. Be SURE to use the Wilton HS Code, 164705, which is also on a drop-down menu at the registration site, otherwise we do not receive their scores for inclusion on their transcripts. We will again offer the ACT Prep Workshop on January 30th & 31st here at WHS. Information will be mailed to parents in late December.
