What is Wind power plant?• Wind power plant converts the kinetic energy of

wind into electricity.

• There are a lot of wind power plants around the world, such as UK which is the windiest country in Europe.

Types of Wind power plant.

• Horizontal axis wind power generator.

Vertical axis wind power generator.

Horizontal axis wind Turbine.

• HAWT is a type of wind power turbine that spins like a windmill. It usually has 3 propellers that spin horizontally when the wind energy gets applied to it.

The wind power plant is huge. For 1.5 megawatts

model, it has 212 feet long tower, and has 3 116 feet blades. The total height is 328 feet which is about a

height of Big Ben in London.

How does HAWT work?• First, the nature gives wind

energy to the propeller. Then, the propeller spins(Kinetic energy). Then, the motor spins through low-speed shaft. The energy gets transfer to the gearbox which spins the smaller gear which makes the speed faster. The high-speed shaft transfers energy to the generator and the generator creates electricity from the energy.

• the main rotor shaft is perpendicular from the direction of the wind. VAWT works with the propellers set vertically from the wind.

The size of the Vertical Axis wind turbine is very diverse and usually small.

It is not common like Horizontal axis, but it

doesn’t take much space.

How does VAWT work?• First, the nature gives

wind energy to the vertical propeller. Then, the propeller spins(Kinetic energy). Then, the energy goes through the gearbox which allows the energy passes and go to the generator which makes the electricity.

How much energy does it make?• 2.5-3 MegaWatts Wind turbine can make 6

million kWh per year which can support 1500 houses with electricity.

Wind power in Korea• Compared to other countries,

South Korea has the low ranking of the usage of wind power.

• Korea has only 483 Total MW Wind power. However, China has 75324, USA has 60007 Total MW Wind power.

Energy in South Korea• Compared to electricity production rank, South

Korea has very low renewable resources energy production

Wind power energy in South Korea

• There are a lot of wind power plants near the Korean shorelines. There are many plants in Jeju Island because it is windy. There are not much of power plants near cities because it creates noise and destroys the visual of the city.

Advantages and Disadvantages. • Advantages: The wind is free, there is no

chemical pollution.

• Disadvantages: There has to be certain location to put Wind turbines. The materials are expensive. There are visual and noise pollution.

Environmental issue.• Wind turbines can affect the environment

• Wind turbines destroy the houses of the animals such as birds. Birds get killed when it touches the turbine. Also, animals are getting annoyed with the noise it creates.

Conclusion• Wind turbines use wind to produce electricity

• There are not much wind turbines in South Korea

• Wind turbines are usually located on the shore

• Wind energy usage is less then 1% of SK’s energy

• Wind turbines can hurt the environments

• Wind turbines don’t pollute the air.
