Grapes for wine making are grown in approximately 100 official “appellations” covering over 98 597 ha, stretching from the Northern Cape to the Klein Karoo in the east. Since the introduction of The Wine of Origin system in 1973, wine making areas have been divided into regions, districts and wards. The smallest category of the Wine of Origin (WO) is Estate, which means single farms of which there are about 203 (SAWIS June 2016). Some producers choose not to register as an estate. There are 3 323 primary grape producers and 564 wine cellars crushing grapes. Single vineyard designation is the next level to be recognized. This is still to be approved by authorities, although you will see many wine labels alluding to single vineyard source.
