ABOUT THE COVERLast season, Blake “Bo” Furcron became the ninth player for Elyria High school to

earn the Lorain County Mr. Basketball award. During his senior season, the 6-foot-5guard averaged 21.8 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.9 steals a game. Along withLorain County Mr. Basketball, Furcron was also named Second Team All-Ohio, FirstTeam All-Northeast District and was the Northeast Ohio Conference Player of theYear. The former Pioneer is currently continuing his basketball career at Walsh Uni-versity.

Elyria Catholic’s Riley Schill became the first Panther player to ever pick up the titleof Lorain County Miss Basketball in 2016. Averaging 12.1 points, five assists and 4.7rebounds a game in her senior season, Schill helped the Panther to a 24-4 record, aGreat Lakes Conference Championship and a Division II District title. The Panther’sfour year letter winner is now attending Baldwin Wallace where she is continuing herbasketball career and majoring in pre-veterinary medicine.

eagerly anticipated the conclu-sion of a recent campaign. Wehad all seen and heard enough.That said, the high school bas-ketball campaign can never gethere fast enough. For me, itbrings with it a sense of antici-pation like no other sports sea-son. And unlike in other are-nas, I never look forward tothis campaign ending. So whatis about to unfold on this par-ticular campaign trail? Let’stake a look at the candidates.

In the SWC, Midview willlook to defend their league title(one they shared with NorthOlmsted) with a new headcoach. After a fabulous 19-yearrun, Troy DiFranco steppedaside and assistant JimBrabenic will now guide theMiddies (while Troy joinsWEOL several times at thebroadcast table). Midviewcomes off that SWC champi-onship with some nice playersback, including seniors DustinCrum and Chris Verda and jun-ior Vince Birth. CoachBrabenic anticipates contribu-tions from several newcomersas well, including Gage Carnes,

Keith Johnson, Derek Rebman,Seamus Higley, Isiah Johnson,and Brandon Gilchrist. NorthRidgeville made a great run tothe district title game in the D1tournament and comes off a 16win season. Coach Bryan Mor-gan has some rebuilding to do,but has returnee Brian Flana-gan and new varsity players MJSmith and Jeremy Sanchez tobuild around. Further upRoute 83 in Avon, the Eaglescome off a winning season andfinished just one game back inthe SWC. Coach Kevin Saparareturns a dynamic talent inDelShawn Orr who averaged15 per game as a sophomorelast year, and also welcomesback starters senior JustinLadegaard and sophomoreRyan Maloy. At Avon Lake, theShoremen anticipate successthis winter, with severalreturning players. Coach EricSmith will start with veteranplayers such as All-County per-former Jordan Ball, as well asseniors Carson Toy, Mark Pap-pas, David Marsh, and BarrisColeman. Experience can be arecipe for a strong season.Over at Amherst, the Cometsalso return several performerswho worked through a rockycampaign last year. Pat Braywill count on veteran guys likeJohnny Matakovich, CarterZajowski, Chad Jones, AlecDimacchia, and Gehrig Gabrieto get the Comets on the win-ning side of the ledger. Likelast season, the SWC promisesto be a hotly contested confer-ence, with ‘16 co-championNorth Olmsted, Olmsted Falls,Westlake, Berea-Midpark, andLakewood providing qualityteams as well. It should be agreat race.

Lorain has had back to back“Sweet 16” D1 appearances,and would love a third consec-utive trip to the regional. Freshoff their 22-win season, John

Rositano returns a bevy of tal-ented players including NazBohannon who averaged adouble-double last year andkey contributors Jalil Little,Dasean Brooks, and ShayneSmith. Devone Grant will be anexciting newcomer. The weeklyshowdowns in the LEL willhave the Titans ready for tour-nament time. Lorain will show-case their talents in their glis-tening new gymnasium. Elyriacomes off a 15-win season butwas stung in the sectionals byNorth Ridgeville. Brett Larrickhas to replace Mr. Basketball“Bo” Furcron, but returns sev-eral letter winners, includingsharp shooter and three yearstarter Antonio Blanton, andother starters including bigmen Josh Lotko and JustinKeopp and point guard DezBrown. Other key players forthe Pioneers will be DarquanWoods and Mike Oliver. Elyriawill face tough tests through-out the season in the GCC.

Vermilion will play in theSandusky Bay Conference forthe first time this winter. Whilethe competition will be rugged,Kurt Habermehl has a veryexperienced and deep teamreturning. Junior Joby Pfeil is

an outstanding talent, andseniors Drew Dawson and NikBarkdull are terrific on thefloor as well. The Sailors willmake their presence felt intheir new league, and arealways a tough “out” cometournament time.

The PAC gave fans somegreat games and competitiveteams last year, and this sea-son should be no different. Onthe Stripes side, Clearviewnipped Oberlin for the divisiontitle in ’15-’16, and John Sza-lay’s Clipper team returnssome outstanding talent,including seniors Deuce Mar-tin, DeAri Todd, and JamesBillings. Others expected tocontribute are Sam Daniels,Evan Barrios, Owen Bansekand Javon Todd. But Oberlin isloaded as well. The Phoenixcome off a District Champi-onship and Regional Semi-Final appearance, and coachKurt Russell will welcome backhis top six scorers, seniorsDonald Johnson, CalebHoughley, Zion Hicks, DavidPayne, and Mark Robinson.Another fun season is in storefor the Phoenix. Dan Gundert’sWellington club finished above.500 last year and has threeplayers back who averaged indouble figures, Trey Bealer,

Josh Kindle, and Max Joppeck.Add in key contributors TrevorPorter and Colton Schmidt,and this could be a terrific sea-son for the Dukes. Firelandswill look to build off a nine winseason last year. The Falconshave two starters returning inDoc Januzzi and Colin Myers,and Firelands coach AlanJanuzzi expects Nick Denneyto play a key role as well.Brookside struggled the pastcouple of seasons, and theyhope the arrival of veteranhead coach Phil Argento willturn things around. CoachArgento expects dramaticimprovement for the Cardinalsled by returning players TylerAlam, Travis Fortney, OwenRozanc, Norman Elias, andManny McNeill. The alwaystough Buckeye Bucks and theBlack River Pirates are the twoother teams in the Stars.

Elyria Catholic fashioned a16 win season last year, whileplaying a tough league andnon-conference schedule.

Coach Phil Kuchta won’t watchhis son Jacob perform for ECafter he graduated in thespring, but some very goodplayers who garnered a lot ofplaying time will be back forthe Panthers, including versa-tile senior Doug Taylor, seniorSean Szabo, junior DorianCrutcher, and junior DonovanWarfield. The Great Lakes Con-ference features some chal-lenging matchups, including aBay Rockets team thatadvanced to the Final 4 lastyear, so EC will be tested allseason.

Independently, Open Doorwill field a very young teamthis season. Coach Todd Wrightcould have three sophomoresin the starting lineup. Those10th graders are Carter Wright,Jared Bublinec, and TreyBrooks. The Patriots will alsoexpect key contributions fromCharley Lovett, RJ Stanford andMaxx Wiley. Through sheerexperience, the Patriots willimprove as the year moves

along. Lake Ridge comes off awinning season last year, andthey have a new head coach.Alan George now guides theRoyals, after Brian Ansberrydeparted for Padua. CoachGeorge has some solidreturnees back, including sen-ior guards Collin Harris andKevin Moreno, and junior for-ward Brian Smith. First Baptistreturns all five starters fromlast year so a strong seasonshould unfold. Head coachDarren Snelling returns someterrific talent in Brett Snelling,Jovan Jones, Jonatan Collazo,and Josue Callazo

The campaign is about tostart. There will be some upsand downs and highs and lowsas the journey unfolds. Theremight even be a debate or twoabout players and teams. Butit’s a campaign that promisesto be a pleasure to watch andfun to listen to over the nextfew months. And we can allagree, that’s a campaign wewill enjoy.

County High School Girls Bas-ketball season will see two newhead coaches on the sidelines.Tony Brown takes over forBrian Arth at Elyria, and longtime area coach Brian Kelley isthe new head coach at Oberlin.Last season Elyria Catholic andLake Ridge Academy were onestep away from Columbuswhen they fell short on thesame Saturday in March.

Elyria Catholic returns threestarters from the 24-4 teamthat made the regional finals.Senior Nora Hopkins 8ppg,6rpg; classmate Sam Filiaggi8ppg, 5rpg; and junior MeganSchelibelhut 8ppg and 5rpg.Coach Eric Rothgery said FaithWilliams returns to LorainCounty, moving back from outof state. Eric says she will havea big impact. The Panthers’goals are big: to win moregames than a year ago and getdeeper in the tournament.Lake Ridge went 18-7 and lostin overtime in the regionalfinal. Key players returning arejuniors Michaela Harrison andSydney Mayberry, and seniorMaria Janasko. Coach LisaMedvetz feels defense andleadership are the keys if LakeRidge is to defend their districtcrown.

Looking at the SouthwesternConference, Meghan Larrick’sAvon Eagles are coming off a17-8 campaign. Senior Shay-lynn Davidson, juniors AmariDavidson and Juliann Walker,and sophomore ElizabethFlynn are key returners. Larrickfeels the SWC will be very com-petitive; their goal is to finish atthe top of the conference. AtAmherst, Kevin Collins’ teamwent 16-8 (11-7 SWC), and lostin the district semifinals. Keyreturners include SydneyRoule, a senior; with 14.7ppg,6.8rpg, and 3.2apg, she has ver-bally committed to D1 IUPUI.Senior Jayla Hall has 12.4ppg,10.3rpg, 2.7apg; Kate Iliff has9.7ppg, 4.1rpg; and KamrynDziak has 7.7ppg and 2.7apg.With so many key players

returning, Collins said the teamgoals are to compete for a con-ference and district titles. AtNorth Ridgeville, Amy Esser’sRangers went 7-16 a year ago.They hope to improve on thatwith all five starters returning.They include senior AddysenKerr, a two year starter with7ppg 3.8rpg; classmate DaniBlagojevic, a key defender ayear ago, and junior IsabellaGeraci. who led the team inpoints at 12.3 and steals with2.7. Esser looks to Izzy to havea big year. The other returningstarters are junior CiannaBright, with 7.5ppg and a teamleading 9.1 rpg, and sopho-more Lauren Miller, pointguard and floor leader, whoadded 4.9ppg and 4.8rpg. AtMidview, Coach Scott Plzakhopes to improve on a two winseason a year ago. It will betough with only two seniorsand one junior on a very youngteam. Returning playersinclude senior Allison Volneyand sophomore Kaeli Evins.,Kaeli led the team as a fresh-man in scoring, rebounding,and assists. At Avon Lake, DaveZvara’s Shoregals are comingoff an 11-13 season. Zvarathinks his team and the leaguewill be balanced and competi-tive. Last year, Zvara lost juniorAnna Robinson and seniorMadison Branch to injuries;this year they return healthyand ready to contribute. Sev-eral others return, including

Moving to the Patriot AthleticConference last season, ScottTerry’s Keystone Wildcats went20-4, (15-1 PAC Stars Champs.)They return five senior starters:McKennah Peters 21ppg, theleading rebounder going toYSU; Ronni Benko 7ppg; Sam-mie Stefan 7ppg; Jena Copley,the team’s best defender and5ppg; and Reagan Ford. Terry’sfirst win this year will be his300th in his fine career. TomThompson’s Columbia Raiderswere the PAC Stripes Champsat 22-4 overall (15-1 PACStripes Champs.) Key returnersinclude Becca Tacchite, a sen-ior 8.8ppg; senior Rachel Tac-chite; and classmates TorrieShields and Lexi Wood; as wellas junior Danielle Matzelle andsophomore Riley Thomas.Thompson’s Raiders will relyon overall team speed and ath-leticism this year and leader-ship from three year starterBecca Tacchite and the core ofreturning seniors. They will be small but Kudelasays they will be able to playmany girls. Nathan Morris isback for year two at Welling-ton. They improved to 5-17 lastyear, and have five letter win-ners back. They are seniorsLogan Simmons 10.4ppg,8.2rpg and Sam Sparks5.2ppg;junior Hope Diermyer3.1ppg; and sophomores AlexisLehmkuhl 5.2ppg, 7rpg andErin Frenk. Brian Kelley inher-its an Oberlin squad that didn’twin a game last year. Returnersinclude Aszure Chamberlin, asenior at 8.9ppg; classmateMarcala Moore 8.4ppg, 7rpg;and junior Cameron Payne.Kelley says they need to beaggressive on both ends of thecourt. He has a good group ofkids who are working hard andbuying into the program.Brookside went 9-14 and theyreturn several players includingseniors Makayla Tuck, LaurenAckerman, Hannah Torres, andMadison Sours. Also beingcounted on are juniors SerenaContreras and Katlyn Vanzant.Coach Barhorst feels his teamwill be more physical than lastseason. Tuck will be in the post,Ackerman and Contreras canplay inside and out. Vanzanthandles the ball, Torres is aslasher, and Sours is an excel-lent athlete. With anew coach and system, Brownexpects them to compete at ahigh level. The strengthsshould be guard play and over-all team depth. At Lorain, MarkFeldmann’s Lady Titans returnfive starters from a seven winteam. Feldmann says theyreally improved at the end oflast season, starting two fresh-men, a sophomore and twojuniors. They are all back andhave had a great summertogether according to Feld-mann. They will be led byNemaja’ Grant and the strongsenior leadership from their sixreturning seniors. Feldmann isexcited about the improvementof his team. At Open Door,Coach Bud Turner’s team went5-12 a year ago. Turner says theteam should be fun to watch,as they are young but athletic

one great high school wrestlingseason after another in recentyears, and the upcoming oneshould be as good as any.

While a lot of that has to dowith a wealth of talent return-ing, the other constant amongthe area’s mat elite is the dedi-cation to offseason work. Mostof the county’s top wrestlerswere active all summer, and allover the country.

No program was busier thanthe Elyria Pioneers, who won apair of state runner-up tro-phies last season — one in theteam state duals and anotherat the individual state tourna-ment.

Elyria has two returningstate champions — juniorBrendon Fenton won the 113-pound title last season andsenior Kevin Vough won theheavyweight title in 2015 — aswell as two-time state placerJ.T. Brown, who placed fourthin Columbus as a sophomoreand junior.

Vough was inactive duringthe offseason as he was rehab-bing a knee injury suffered lastyear, but Fenton, Brown and

their teammates took part inthe national duals, the nationalchampionships in Fargo, N.D.,and multiple open tourna-ments around the Midwest.

Brown was on the TeamOhio squad that captured theJunior National Duals nationalchampionship, while Jordan

Keegan and Lewis Aguilar weremembers of the Ohio teamsthat competed in the CadetFreestyle and Greco-RomanNational Duals.

The Pioneers, who won theinaugural Greater ClevelandConference championship lastyear, also have returning statequalifiers in Matt Zuckerman,Brendan Price and Josh Breed-ing, a state alternate in TristanBrady and two-time districtqualifiers in Jason Truxall andCameron King.

If that wasn’t enough, Elyriaalso has a pair of superstarfreshmen joining the roster inMick Burnett and DylanShawver.

Burnett — son of coach ErikBurnett — was a member ofthe Ohio team that competedin the Schoolboy FreestyleNational Duals and won aSchoolboy Freestyle nationaltitle this summer, andShawver was a double All-American. Both placed thirdin the Junior High state tour-

nament last season. Elyria Catholic will be look-

ing for respect in the GreatLakes Conference and theywill be led by one of the mostrespected Division IIIwrestlers in the state. SeniorStan Bleich will be looking toearn his fourth trip to thestate tournament and histhird stop on the state podi-ums.

Bleich, who has won threesectional and district titles,went 1-2 as a freshman inColumbus, finished sixth as asophomore and placed thirdlast season. If his trend ofimprovement continues, he’llwrestle in the state final thisseason and could bring thePanthers their first statechampionship since ScottBurnett in 1998.

Bleich will have help in thelineup from sophomore SteveFerguson, a returning statealternate, and 2014 districtqualifier (while at Oberlin)

Robby Cobb.Lorain will be looking for

big things from senior AaronHuff, a returning state quali-fier and sectional champion,this season. He will be joinedby district qualifiers KhalilBrown and Shawn Petty.

The Titans, who compete inthe Lake Erie League, alsohave LEL champions BlakeBartlome and Daniel Findley,and a transfer from Shaw inTyler Casey to help fill out thelineup.

Several area teams will belooking to unseat OlmstedFalls as Southwestern Confer-ence champion this year, andMidview tops the list.

The Midview Middies willbe led by state qualifier AlecForrer, who qualified to Fargoin Greco this summer, statealternate Seth Frambach anddistrict qualifiers Zak Ander-son, Trever Begin, JacobSnider, Spencer Berthold andEvan Keyse.

Anderson and Berthold alsocompeted at the nationals inFargo, and the Middies haveseven freshmen that qualifiedto the Junior High state tour-nament last season.

Avon also has a solid corereturning, led by state quali-fier Tate Zeman and districtqualifier Tommy Sear. Zeman,Alec Walker and Kyle Burgess— as well as Midview’sBerthold — were part of thearea team that competed inthe Ashland University Duals

earlier in the summer.Amherst will also have a

returning state qualifier inheavyweight Matt Lee, andwill get help from two-timedistrict qualifier Alex Reyesand district qualifier T.J. Rau-pach.

North Ridgeville’s topwrestler should be returningstate alternate Liam Schill,and the Rangers have a hand-ful of wrestlers who’ve shownmoments of greatness lastseason and may be the next tostep up for the program.

While Avon Lake has noreturning state or districtqualifiers, the Shoremen haveover 40 wrestlers in their pro-gram this year and will belooking toward the leadershipof seniors Jack Long and Tris-ten Olivencia.

Vermilion will officially be amember of the Sandusky BayConference this season, andthe Sailors have three districtqualifiers — Trevor Boyd,Tyler Bath, Justin See (2015)— and a pair of district alter-nates — Alex Matos and JakobKoleszar — that should helpthem compete right away.

While Firelands will beunder new leadership — JoshMalave left to become thehead wrestling coach at theUniversity of Mount Union —but it will still be a heavyfavorite to defend its firstPatriot Athletic Conferencechampionship.

If working hard during theoffseason is a recipe for suc-cess, Falcons heavyweightSean Lipscomb will accom-plish a lot of great things thisseason. Lipscomb — a districtqualifier and sectional cham-pion last season — competedwith Team Ohio at the CadetFreestyle and Greco-RomanNational Duals, and was aFreestyle and Greco-Romannationals qualifier at Fargo.

Firelands will also havethree-time district qualifierLarry Verhovec, two-time dis-trict qualifiers Connor Eck-man, Miguel Morell, PatricKeown and Douglas Childers,and district qualifier JasonNorwood and Nick McCrary

in the lineup.As if that weren’t enough,

the Falcons will also have astar freshman in PaytonBurgdorf, who wrestled at theNational Duals and at Fargothis summer.

The other returning areastate qualifier in the PACbelongs to Brookside. SeniorBrad Huhn was a two-timedistrict qualifier before break-ing through to Columbus lastseason.

Huhn’s top teammateshould be Greg Packard, atwo-time district qualifierwho placed sixth at the dis-trict tournament last seasonafter winning a sectionalchampionship.

The Cardinals also havereturning district qualifiers inCody Nusbaum, David Ocasio,Chas Jackson and JacobStoehr, and will be under thedirection of former assistantcoach Seth Houston this year.

Columbia also boasts three-time district qualifiers in ZakShaffer and Josh Newman,who was a state alternate lastseason and a sectional cham-pion in 2015.

The Raiders also havereturning district qualifiers inTroy Cassidy and MikeJacobucci, who was a sec-tional champion last year.

Not to be outdone, theWellington Dukes have a slewof district qualifiers back inthe fold, led by two-time dis-trict qualifiers Colin Shaffstall

and Max Mohrman. Joining the pair are district

qualifiers Mason Wright, ChrisMiller, Nick Fox and DawsonHammer (2015).

Keystone has made a tradi-tion of highlighting superstarbrothers, and Justin Ocheltreeis hoping to match olderbrother Ben in earning a tripto the state tournament.Ocheltree was a district quali-fier last season and aFreestyle national qualifier atFargo.

Ben Ocheltree placed sev-enth at 195 pounds at theDivision II state tournamentlast season.

The Wildcats also return apair of district qualifiers inDavid McCullough and Gar-rett Coe (2015), and will belooking for big things out ofsenior leaders Clay Todd andTyler Elliott as well as juniorJaret Bender.

Clearview and Oberlin eachhave one returning districtqualifier in this year’s lineup.For the Clippers, it’s heavy-weight J.D. McCardle, andRobert Bouchonville willanchor the Phoenix’s lineup.

While it’s too soon to sayLorain County will enjoy itsgreatest high school wrestlingseason during the upcomingmonths, it’s a safe bet to sayarea fans will be treated toworld-class wrestling, a solidgroup of state qualifiers andprobably a state champion ortwo.
