How to stay safe on winter roads Snowy weather can be a time for fun, especially for

avid skiers or children who relish spending days off fromschool tossing snowballs and building snow forts. Manyadults, however, do not look forward to the snow asmuch as youngsters do. Snow can be hazardous whendriving, but putting snow tires on a vehicle can improvevehicle safety.

According to information from the National HighwayTraffic Safety Administration, roughly 115 people dieevery day in vehicle crashes in the United States. Eachwinter, snowfall compounds treacherous road conditions, increasing the risk of accidents.

It is important to know how to drive when weatherconditions are dangerous. It is also wise to outfit a ve-hicle to reduce its risk of slipping and sliding on icy, snowy roads.

Here are some tips to follow.

Invest in snow tires. Those who live in especially snowy climates and do a

lot of driving would be wise to purchase snow tires. Snowtires, also called winter tires, have special tread patternsthat offer better traction in snow and ice. They also aremade from softer rubber compounds than regular tiresthat retain their flexibility in cold weather, allowing thetire to conform to the surface of the road. Although manyvehicles come with technology to prevent accidents, theycannot do their jobs if tires are not maintaining their gripon the road.

All-season tires are not a replacement for snow tires.All-season tires are designed to work in all sorts of con-

ditions, from rainy weather to dry roads. Therefore, it isbetter to invest in a set of snow tires that will offer youbetter protection. When putting snow tires on a car ortruck, be sure to do so on all the wheels -- not just thedriving wheels. Otherwise you may still risk spin outs oruneven gripping of the road.

It is not a good idea to keep snow tires on all year. Be-cause they are softer, snow tires tend to be more noisyand can wear out faster in warmer weather. Therefore, switch out the tires at the beginning of the snowy sea-son and then before the spring arrives anew.

Limit time spent driving in the snow. Avoid driving during snowstorms or directly after

whenever possible. Snow not only makes roads slick, but falling flakes can impair a driver's visibility and re-duce his or her response time. Try to wait until snow-clearing teams have salted, plowed and sanded roadsbefore venturing out.

Drive slowly. Reduce your speed when driving in inclement weath-

er. It can be more difficult to stop or maneuver around apotential obstacle when conditions are less than ideal.Traveling at a high speed will increase the risk of acci-dents.

Be sure you can see clearly. Clear off the snow from the windshield, side mirrors

and windows so it does not compromise your view. Also, top off the windshield fluid so you will be able to clear

snow and salt kick-up from your windshield. Look for awasher fluid that has an antifreeze component, other-wise, your washer jets and wiper blades could be ren-dered useless.

Leave enough room between you and other mo-torists.

Tailgating is responsible for many accidents, evenwhen there is no snow on the ground. In inclementweather, it can take longer to slow or stop the car afterpressing on the brakes. Having an additional space be-tween your car and the one in front of you helps youavoid a collision.

Be aware of black ice. Black ice gets its name from its veritable invisibility. It

is so thin and hard to spot, it just looks like the black as-phalt of the road. Black ice tends to form in areas thathave had snow or ice melt, which then refreezes at nightwhen temperatures drop. Be extra cautious on turns andon highway exit and entrance ramps, where black icefrequently forms.

Steer your car into the skid.Remain calm and do not panic and jam on the brakes

if your car starts to skid. Slamming on the brakes willonly exacerbate the skid. Rather, take your foot off theaccelerator, allowing the car to naturally slow down asyou turn your wheels into the direction the car is skid-ding. This should help right the car and get you back ontrack.

Driving in the winter time, especially during or after snowfall, can be dangerous.

Stop texting and drivingOf the many dangers on the road, text messaging while driving is one that is entirely

preventable. Putting down your phone when driving can prevent thousands of injuriesand even death. According to Students Against Destructive Decisions and Liberty Mutu-al Insurance Group, instant and text messaging while driving tops the list of driver dis-tractions. Evidence gathered by these organizations has suggested that more than 3,000vehicle fatalities and about 300,000 collisions a year can be attributed to texting conver-sations while the vehicle is in motion.

The website Distraction.gov notes that, in 2010, 3,092 people were killed in crashesinvolving a distracted driver and an additional 416,000 were injured in motor vehiclecrashes involving a distracted driver. Some people are now saying that texting while driv-ing is equally as dangerous as driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs in terms of in-terfering with individuals' driving abilities.

Texting creates a crash risk 23 times greater than driving while not distracted, accord-ing to the United States. Department of Transportation. Although it may seem like a dri-ver's eyes are off the road for only a nominal amount of time, texting generally requiresabout 4 seconds, which is 4 seconds drivers are not looking at the road. At average driv-ing speeds, that can mean driving about 360 feet, or the length of a football field, with-out looking.

But messaging while driving is not the only danger associated with phones and oper-ating a motor vehicle. A study from Carnegie Mellon University found that using a cellphone while driving reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by al-most 40 percent. Therefore, texting or simply speaking on a phone while driving involvesa manual distraction, a visual distraction and a cognitive distraction. All of those dis-tractions add up to trouble.

Many areas have banned the use of cell phones while driving. But such laws are diffi-cult to enforce. A 2009 Pew Research study on teens and distracted driving found thatnearly half of all people between the ages 12 to 17 have at one time ridden in a vehiclewhere the driver was engaged in texting. Fifty-two percent of phone-owning teens ages16 to 17 said they have talked on a cell phone while driving.

In response to the rise of texting-while-driving accidents, some organizations havetaken an eye-opening approach to educating drivers about the dangers of texting. In2010, AAA of the Carolinas started airing an evening public service announcement show-ing graphic images of a teen driver texting then getting involved in a 3-car accident. Theending slogan stated, "You drive, you text, you die." Other campaigns focus on the posi-tives instead of the negatives, with Facebook groups promoting people who choose notto text and drive.

Any activity that takes a driver's attention away from the road can lead to accidents. This includes eating, changing radio stations or addressing unruly children in the backseat. Making an effort to reduce distractions -- especially putting down the phone whilein the car -- can considerably reduce accident rates.

Properly adjusted mirrors vastly improve safety Millions of motor vehicle accidents occur each year.

While the motor vehicle industry places a great emphasison safety, it's ultimately up to motorists to ensure their ve-hicle is as safe as possible.

Mirrors are an often overlooked aspect of safe driving.Properly adjusted rearview and side view mirrors improvevisibility by reducing blind spots, which in turn reduces adriver's risk of being in an accident, especially on multi-lane highways where drivers may be forced to keep tabson fellow motorists on both sides of their vehicles. Whenadjusting mirrors, consider the following tips to ensureyour vehicle is as safe as possible.

Ensure optimal visibility from the interior rearview mir-ror. A properly adjusted rearview mirror allows drivers tosee what's alongside and behind them, improving roadawareness while reducing the risk of an accident. Mostdrivers know the rearview mirror should allow them tosee out of the rear window from the driver's seat. But it'salso important to utilize the day/night switch found onmost rearview mirrors. Such a switch isn't an unnecessaryaccessory, but one that can reduce glare from cars behindyou at night. Just be sure to flip the switch back to thedaytime setting in the morning to ensure maximum visi-bility.

Firmly secure the rearview mirror. Unfortunately, rearview mirrors are not always sturdy, as many vehiclemanufacturers attach the rearview mirror to the wind-shield with a special button that is glued to the glass at thefactory. This glue can come undone when drivers hit apothole or just gradually weaken thanks to the ravages ofheat, humidity or cold weather.

When a rearview mirror comes unglued, drivers oftenlook to a quick, yet temporary, solution like super glue ora high-strength adhesive. Such quick fixes are ineffectiveover the long haul, and drivers might find themselves driv-ing down the street without a rearview mirror. Specialrearview mirror adhesive is designed specifically for mo-torists looking for a permanent fix that ensures therearview mirror will stay attached to the windshield re-gardless of external factors like the weather or poor road

conditions. The adhesive employs a special formula thatcan easily withstand changing weather conditions and thethermal expansion that typically renders other glues andadhesives useless.

Don't overlook side view mirrors. A 1995 study from theSociety of Automotive Engineers noted that, when posi-tioned correctly, side view mirrors can help drivers see ve-hicles in their blind spots, eliminating a driver's need toglance over his or her shoulder when changing lanes.

When adjusting the driver's side mirror, place the sideof your head against the window, then adjust the mirroruntil the side of your vehicle comes into view. To adjust thepassenger's side mirror, sit in the driver's seat, and then

lean to the right so that your head is in the car's center-line. Adjust the mirror until the side of your vehicle comesinto view.

Once your mirrors have been adjusted and the rearviewmirror is firmly secure, don't forget to use each of thesemirrors when driving. Many drivers rely solely on theirrearview mirrors to back up and change lanes on the high-way.

However, if all of your mirrors are aligned correctly, youshould be able to see a vehicle leave the rearview mirrorand move to one of the side view mirrors immediately.Diligent use of each mirror can help prevent accidents thatoccur when drivers change lanes.

Review mirrors should be properly attached and adjusted to improve your safety.

Help teenagers be better drivers A new crop of teenagers is ready to take to the roads with their newly minted driver’s

licenses. Most teenagers are anxious to get behind the wheel because having a licenseand access to a car means freedom they may not have had before. However, parents andguardians may be worried about these teens on the road because they lack the practiceand experience of more advanced drivers. Continuing to educate young drivers about safe-ty can help reduce the risk of accident. Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death forteenagers in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration re-ports that vehicular accidents account for 35 percent of all fatalities among people 15 to20 years old. What puts teens particularly at risk is the tendency of many young driversto engage in reckless behavior and/or distracted driving. It is often up to parents to rein-force the rules of the road and also consistently work with their children so that the teenscan become better drivers.

Practice safer driving. As with any activity, practice helps hone skills and teaches people through their own

mistakes. Driving is no exception. Mistakes on the road can be serious; therefore, it isbest for teen drivers to practice driving in areas that are not heavily populated or full oftraffic. Parents may want to establish rules that the teen is not able to drive solo until heor she passes the requirements set forth by Mom or Dad. Parents can routinely ridearound with their teen children to gauge how progress is coming along.

Get the facts. Talk to teens about road risks and how to stay safe. Research the laws and statistics

pertaining to teenage drivers and share that information. It may not always be well re-ceived, but there's a good chance that some of the message will get through.

Set a good example. According to a 2007 study from Students Against Destructive Decisions, the biggest

influence on how teens drive is their parents. Almost two-thirds of high school teens saytheir parents talk on a cell phone while driving, almost half say their parents speed andalmost one-third say their parents don't wear a safety belt. Parents should be mindful oftheir own behaviors when driving and the impression those behaviors are making onyoungsters.

Establish rules. Distracted driving is claiming more and more lives each year. Many accidents are as the

result of texting while driving. According to Distraction.org, in 2010, 3,092 people werekilled in crashes involving a distracted driver and an estimated additional 416,000 wereinjured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver. Text messaging creates acrash risk 23 times worse than driving while not distracted. Also, research has found thatsending or receiving a text takes a driver's eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 sec-onds, the equivalent -- at 55 mph -- of driving the length of an entire football field blind.Parents can implement rules, such as that cell phones are not allowed to be on while inthe car or the phone should be stored in the back seat or trunk while a teen is driving.Parents also may want to set rules that multiple passengers (friends) are not allowed toride in the car until the teen is more accustomed to driving.

Driving is an activity that offers freedom and mobility. It is also one that places a verylarge and potentially destructive piece of machinery into the hands of a driver. Educationshould be ongoing as teens learn to drive.

Traffic accidents account for many injuries and fatalities among teens. Education and prac-tice are essential to helping teenagers become better drivers.

Child car safety goes beyond car seats Car accidents are the leading cause of injury for children.

Ensuring kids are safe in the car goes beyond securing themin the right child safety seat. It means taking added precau-tions to avoid injuries. According to the National Center forStatistics and Analysis, nearly 250,000 children are injuredevery year in car accidents in the United States. Car acci-dents are also the leading cause of acquired disability, suchas brain injury and paralysis, for children nationwide.

Most people are aware that they should use the requisitechild safety seat for their kids but do not heed other safetywarnings. Here are some ways to keep children safe whenriding in vehicles.

Recognize that having a car seat is not enough.Even parents who have child safety seats for their kids

may not be using them correctly. According to the NationalHighway Traffic Safety Administration, at least 72 percent ofthe 3,500 observed child vehicle safety restraints being usedindicated improper use. One of the reasons children areharmed in vehicular accidents is because the child is moved

to a larger restraint system or an adult seat prematurely.

Do not leave a child unattended.Injuries can occur to children when they are left to their

own devices in or around a vehicle. Although there are cer-tain safety precautions built into a car, they are not alwaysfoolproof. A child may shift a parked car into gear and rollinto the street from a driveway. Other injuries may includegetting hurt from powered accessories in the car, such asmoving seats or liftgates. A kid also may become trapped ina car or trunk, succumbing to heat stroke or lack of oxygen.

Make sure kids stay buckled in. As a child graduates from 5-point harnesses to regular

safety belts, they are likely to be able to unlatch the belt toexit the car. Some children are prone to taking off a seat beltwhile the car is in motion. NHTSA estimates note that therisk of injury by properly wearing safety belts and usingsafety seats correctly is reduced by 50 to 75 percent. Fur-thermore, in the event an accident occurs, a child who is not

wearing a seatbelt becomes a flying projectile who might in-jure others in the car.

Keep all limbs inside the vehicle. It may seem like a game for a child to lean his or her head

or arms out of the window while the vehicle is in motion, butsuch behavior is inherently risky. On narrow roadways orwhere the car comes close to roadside signs or passing cars, parts of the body outside of the vehicle can be hit and bro-ken or even torn off.

Be mindful of kids being injured around a car. Children who sprint into the street after a rolling ball or

dash through parking lots may be hit by motorists who arenot paying attention or do not react quickly enough. Driversof SUVs and minivans often find it difficult to see a shortchild behind a car when backing up.

Ensuring children’s safety in and out of the car requiresknowledge of many of the hazards.

Maintain a healthy environmentinside your vehicle

Over the last several years, homeowners have in-creasingly emphasized clean air in their homes.

The growing popularity of home air purifiers suggeststoday's homeowners want to make certain the environ-ment inside their home is as healthy as possible.

While protecting the environment in a home is impor-tant, it's equally as important for motorists to maintaina healthy environment in their vehicles.

The average American spends roughly 10 to 15 hoursper week inside a car, where dust, odors, smoke andother potentially sour smells can make riding in a carrather unpleasant. In addition, air pollution and aller-gens inside a vehicle can pose a significant health riskto drivers and their passengers.

Fortunately, there are several steps drivers can take tomaintain a healthy environment inside their vehicle.

Improve air quality. Perhaps the best way drivers can ensure their passen-

gers have a healthy environment while traveling in a caris to improve the air quality within the vehicle. The au-tomotive clean air systems quickly and effectively puri-fies the air inside a vehicle by eliminating harmful gases, dust, pollen, smoke, odors, and bacteria.

Employing filtering processes, system can be easilyplaced beneath a seat, in the rear of the vehicle or on aseatback while they capture big particles, such as humanhair and pet hair, during the pre-filter stage before the

HEPA filter removes these particles and others, includ-ing pollen and pet dander.

They can even removes harmful gases and even badodors, such as those caused by smoke, ensuring the ve-hicle's interior is not only healthy, but also pleasant fordrivers and passengers alike.

Clean the vehicle's interior. Many automobile owners pay particular attention to

the appearance of their vehicle's exterior. However, thosesame drivers don't spend nearly as much time, if any, tending to the vehicle's interior.

But a neglected interior doesn't just fall victim to spillsand dirt or other particles brought in from the outside.Over time, a neglected interior might begin to growmildew, which is both unhealthy and unpleasant.

In general, clean the vehicle's interior once a month toprevent mildew growth and the buildup of dirt and grime.

Don't fall in love with the "new car smell." Few consumers can resist the famed "new car smell."

Though enticing, the new car smell is actually an out-gassing of toxic chemicals from newly formed plastics, and the chemicals in these gases have been linked tobirth defects, impaired learning, liver toxicity, prematurebirths, and early puberty in laboratory animals.

Though this doesn't mean consumers should avoidbuying new cars, it should inspire consumers to address

the new car smell immediately. GoPure's HESA filter can easily and effectively remove

the harmful gases that stem from the new car smell, while continuously removing additional odors as the carages.

Vacuum carpets, floor mats and between seats. Carpets and seating are another collection point for dirt

and pollutants and need to be vacuumed thoroughly.Make sure to get the floor mats, the floor under the floormats and all the way under the seats.

Pound your seats with something large like a baseballbat to loosen and knock out all the dirt and soil that hassettled into the creases and stitching.

Protect newer vehicles on hot days. Hot weather can take its toll on drivers, and it can also

wreak havoc on their vehicle's interior. Heat from the sun can cause the vehicle's plastics,

vinyl or leather parts to emit volatile organic compounds,or VOCs, which, according to the Environmental Protec-tion Agency, can produce both short-term and long-termadverse health effects.

Whenever possible, park in the shade or use a sunshade on the windshield. In addition, slightly openingthe windows in spring and summer promotes air flowthrough the cabin, helping reduce the risk of VOC buildupinside the vehicle.

Automotive clean air systems quickly and effectively purify the air inside a vehicle by eliminating harmful gases, dust, pollen, smoke, odors, and bacteria.

Simple steps to a clean interiorMuch like curb appeal improving the chances of a sale

on your home, having a car that is presented well insideand out may boost the amount of money and potentialof a resale on your vehicle. Even vehicle owners whodon't anticipate selling their vehicles in the near futureshould maintain the vehicles to ensure they are safe andsound.

After home and work, a car is where many peoplespend most of their time. As a result, a vehicle can eas-ily become soiled, scratched or overrun with clutter.Maintaining the interior of your vehicle need not takemuch time or effort, but it should be done often enoughto keep on top of the mess.

Here's how to start.

Remove ClutterThe first step in cleaning the interior is to remove the

excess items that may have accumulated in the car. Busyfamilies tend to leave toys, books or clothing in their ve-hicles. There also may be discarded food wrappers orbeverage containers.

People who commute also may accumulate a numberof items in their cars, including business materials. Theseitems should be sorted through and put where they be-long before tackling the rest of the cleaning work.

VacuumMuch of the dirt and debris that accumulates in vehi-

cles can easily be removed with a vacuum. A shop vacwill have enough power to thoroughly clean upholstery

and mats. If you do not have one, visit a self car wash.Remove the floor mats and set them on a flat surface.

Thoroughly vacuum the mats to clear them of dust, dirt, food crumbs, and any other debris. Vacuum the floor ofthe car as well as any seat upholstery that may be acatch-all for crumbs.

Using a soft-bristled vacuum attachment, you also canremove dust from the vents, speakers and the center con-sole of your vehicle.

Spot cleaningSpills and stains do occur in vehicles, just as they do

elsewhere. Cleaning these stains may require a littleelbow grease and a cleansing agent. Most automotivesupply stores will sell an upholstery cleaner designed forcar interiors.

You also can use a mixture of laundry detergent andwater applied with a slightly damp rag or sponge. Goover each area that is soiled so you can devote adequatetime to each stain. The same process can be used on thevehicle's carpeting. Use a brush to really clean heavilysoiled areas.

Leather upholstery can be more delicate than cloth up-holstery. When cleaning a leather interior, use only prod-ucts that are designed specifically for leather so as toavoid damaging the interior.

Console and dashboard detailingA barely moist cloth can be used to clean the plastic

components of the dashboard and consoles of the vehi-

cle. The goal is to wipe away any dust and any minorstains or sticky areas without saturating important elec-trical components.

It is always better to spray polish or cleaning agents onyour cloth than directly on the dashboard. In hard-to-reach-areas, consider using a soft-bristled paintbrush orcotton swabs to clean in crevices. Wipe down everythingwith a dry cloth or towel afterward.

WindowsHaving clean windows is essential to driving safely.

Cleaning the windshield and windows is relatively sim-ple to do with a glass cleaner spray and a lint-free cloth.Use caution when cleaning the rear windshield if it hasa defogger/defroster grid on the window. These wirescan be damaged easily. Clean with the direction of the de-froster grid lines.

Freshen the carPlace an air freshener or spray a product on the air in-

take vent to eradicate musty smells in the car. It also isimportant to replace the cabin air filter periodically, oth-erwise you could be breathing in dust and dander that istrapped in the filter.

These are the basic steps to cleaning a car's interior.Other detail work can be done depending on your pref-erences and the make of the car. Routine maintenancehelps others see you have pride in your vehicle and canensure a better return on your investment down the lineif you choose to sell.

Keeping your car clean is simple and easy.

Save up personal time and leave work early. Peak travel times for Thanksgiving driving include

Wednesday afternoon when many businesses close earlyfor the holiday.

If you leave then, there's a good chance you will be sit-ting in traffic with the thousands of other travelers whodecided to get a head start by leaving at 3 p.m.

If you can, take off from work on Wednesday and leavein the morning.

Or do the bulk of your driving at night.

Pack a GPS device with you. Busy holidays could mean a greater propensity for ac-

cidents or traffic jams. Don't be caught off guard by notknowing a detour around the hold-up.

Having a GPS with you can help you to stay abreast oftraffic patterns and get out of trouble should your maintravel route become blocked.

Prepare the vehicle. There's nothing worse than having turkey and pump-

kin pie on your mind when you are standing roadsidewith an inoperable car.

Schedule a tune-up before travel to make sure you areset for the trip. Have a spare tire ready and any toolsnecessary should you have a blow-out.

Pack snacks. Hunger pangs can make tempers rise when you are

stuck in traffic. Although there will be plenty of food at your destina-

tion, pack snacks (especially if kids are traveling) so thatfalling sugar levels or grumbling stomachs do not add

stress to the trip.

Millions of people will be visiting friends and relativesfor the Thanksgiving holiday. Keep travel-related stressat bay by having a travel plan and setting off as early aspossible.

With a little pre-planning, holiday traveling with your family can be stress-free.
