It is soon to be Winter again! Much like last year we have had an almost instant change of season

as we have gone from Summer to Fall in a few short days. As winter is upon us, we hope that you will

take some time to participate in our seasonal offerings for this coming year.

By the time you receive this catalog, we will have launched our new department website. Please come

find us through the City of Lodi home page at www.lodi.gov. The new web page will be an easier way

to find and sign-up for all of the programs and events we have to offer.

We want to thank you, once again, for your patronage. As we are here to service the community, we

look forward to providing new and interesting programs as well as the classes and activities that you

have made popular over the past couple of years.

We hope that, once again, you find programs that you enjoy in this season’s catalog. As always, if

there is something you think we should offer that you do not find, we hope to hear from you.

We hope your holidays will be filled with you this season and we look forward to seeing you at our

programs.

Sincerely,

James M. Rodems

ballroom danceThe Sady’s have been teaching at Hutchins Street Square since 1999, specializing in social ballroom dancing, dances that fit on a crowded dance floor. They don’t have their dancers memorize choreographed routines, but teach American style steps and techniques that are universal wherever ballroom dancers gather, are easy to remember and fit into any dance setting. It takes most people several sessions to master Level One basics for the six dances. For those that do, we have Level Two classes, expanding on the step patterns for a well rounded ballroom dance education. The exercise is good and not overly strenuous. If you have been on the sidelines, admiring others enjoy moving to the music with style and grace, why not join them? It’s fun! Fee is per couple.Instructor: Dan & Susan Sady Ages: 14+location: kirst hall at hutchins street square 6 week session

lodi promenaderssquare dancinG and round dancinGSquare dancing is four couples forming a square and dancing as a group. It is a physical activity, good for the mind, body and soul. It is smoke and alcohol free for a healthy environment. The calls coordinate the body and brain—physical fitness burns calories—slows and helps prevent loss of bone mass—and the social aspects of interacting in a square encourages many friendships.Joe Vallery has over 40 year experience directing dance patterns for square dancing. He also has the experience for cueing round dancing, which is a ballroom type dance as everyone dances the same steps to the cues given to the rhythm of the music.Recommended for ages 10 years and up. Visual ArtsdecoratiVe paintinGHave you ever thought that Decorative Painting suggested painting simple flowers on a wooden or tin plate? Yes, it can be that and so much more. Modern Decorative Painting encompasses painting any subject on virtually any surface. You can create a portrait of the family pet on canvas, a fall or winter wall hanging, colorful leaves on fabric, a still life of fruit on a wooden plate, or landscapes on any material or surface. This is in addition to creating one of a kind wearable art on T-shirts, jeans or jackets. With the use of acrylic paints and simple step by step painting procedures, almost any decorative art project can be achieved. Use your own drawings or patterns supplied by the instructor. Group lessons are limited to 5 students per instructor, are 25 minutes in length and follow American Red Cross guidelines. Please refer to the activenet schedule to make your selection early. Swimmers of all ages can easily choose a class that will be motivating and challenging as well as appropriate for their present skill level. Classes with 3 or less students may be combined or cancelled.

Level 1-MinnowMust be 36” to the chin and willing to get in the water or pass evaluation by a City of Lodi Swim Instructor. This class helps students explore the water safely while learning basic water skills. “Minnow” skills include safe entries and exits, water adjustment, submerging face, floating, locomotion with walking and kicking, and arm strokes.

Level 2-SeahorseChildren can successfully demonstrate Level 1 skills or able to fully submerge independently. “Seahorse” swimmers begin to learn the primary skills needed to master all strokes including unassisted floats, glides, combined arm and leg skills on front and back. Crawl, elementary back stroke and back crawl will be introduced as well as sculling and treading.

Level 3-Jelly FishChildren can successfully demonstrate Level 2 skills or able to float and swim independently on front and back. At this level stroke development is our main focus. “Jellyfish” will refine crawl stroke with side breathing, and continue elementary back stroke and back crawl. Under water swimming, dives, turns and an introduction to breast and side stroke are also included.

Level 4-OtterChildren can successfully demonstrate Level 3 skills or able to swim 15 yards crawl stroke with side breathing and 15 yards back crawl. This level takes all strokes and skills to a higher proficiency level and teaches students how to confidently apply them in various aquatic activities. “Otters” will perfect crawl, back, breast and sidestroke, and learn appropriate turns for each stroke, treading, water rescue skills and application of skills for endurance and survival.
