On Tuesday, the K-5 school community attended Madagascar at the North Shore Music Theatre. I was so proud of how well the students behaved and how engaged they were with the performance. On behalf of our school community I would like to thank the Friends of Winthrop for making this enriching field trip possible by covering the funds for all of the buses as well as contributing towards the ticket prices, keeping family contributions lower. Next week starts the beginning of the MCAS testing across the state. Our teachers have been supporting students in particular subject areas and assisting them in becoming familiar with the testing formats so it is not unfamiliar to them. Grade 3 will begin with English/Language Arts testing on Thursday. Please assist your child in having a good breakfast, and arriving to school on time so they can settle in with the morning classroom routine. I would like to remind all parents picking up at the end of the day that the process is to cue your car up along the right side of the building and stay in your car. A staff member will bring your child out to you, and will work to do this as swiftly as possible. Please do not park in front of the school or on the other side as we need to let the buses exit the grounds without the added concern of pedestrians crossing the driveway. Also at this point in the school year all students should be able to independently get in and out of the car and adults should be able to stay in the vehicle and help keep our pick up and drop off lane moving as smoothly as possible. I met with the School Council this week to review our ongoing school improvement goals. We have incorporated many areas from last year’s family survey into our work this year and have embedded several goals into our continued improvement plan for our Winthrop School community. Enjoy the four-day weekend spending time with family and friends. Hello Winthrop Families,

Presenters:

Peggy McElhinney, Director of Curriculum, Assessment and Instruction Christine Fichera, Elementary Math Coordinator

Sue Stibel, Elementary ELA Coordinator

This event is open to all elementary parents and is sponsored by Title One.

Still have receipts at home? Bring them in next week. Deadline is Friday, April 6

Mrs. Mastrianni is going to be creating a Reverse Engineering Pop-Up Makerspace cart for the classrooms to use and she is looking for donations of materials that would be acceptable to be disassembled by students. Please refer to the list below:

Winthrop School took up a large part of the North Shore Music Theatre on Tuesday’s all school field.

During a recent Kids Care Club meeting, the students decided to send thank-you cards to our local National Grid workers after the multiple storms and power outages experienced in our area.

A few newsletters ago we mentioned a grant that was received from the EdFund to purchase equipment for our Makerspace lab. This button maker is one of our new pieces of equipment. In order to earn a badge, fourth and fifth grade students complete challenges in specific areas such as Innovative Designer, Computer Programming/Robotics, and Keyboarding to name a few (see list below).
