EDITOR’S LETTERWe all have so many different stories about Chinatown that show how we are tied to the neighborhood—res-ident, business owner, worker, property owner, com-munity organization member, church member, Castelar student, Alpine basketball team member, to name a few.

Regardless of how we identify and what we know about Chinatown, we are all united by the common theme that Chinatown has a special, distinct meaning for all of us. It is what motivates us to continue to be involved and care for the neighborhood. Chinatown is also changing, and these changes should be guided by a collective vision that will address the needs and strengthen the current assets that make the neighborhood special.

This issue highlights these different stories to commem-orate New Chinatown’s 80th birthday, and begin a conversation around the development of a community vision to guide its future. Along with the stories featured in the magazine, our team is putting together a series of art installations across the neighborhood to engage the community on memories and hopes for tomorrow. We hope everyone will join in and celebrate Chinatown’s past, present and future with us!

MINIMUM WAGE INCREASES IN CITY OF LA羅省市最低工資在七月提升 On July 1, the minimum wage in the City of LA increases again, based on the schedule adopted by the City Council in 2015. Nationwide, organizers have pushed cities to pass laws advocating “living wages” and paid sick leave for workers. Over the years, wage stagnation left many strug-gling to meet basic needs. According to a 2017 study by Harvard University, the LA area is one of the most expensive housing markets in the U.S., with more than 57% of Angele-nos spending more than 30% of their income on housing. The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority consistently names low income and rising housing costs as major factors driving the homelessness crisis. Meanwhile, business advocates have also spoken out about how higher minimum wages increase operational costs. For more information on wages in the City of LA, visit www.wagesla.lacity.org.

D: ANY THOUGHTS ON THE RECENT STREET VENDING ORDINANCE?

L: I don’t see a big deal with people selling on the sidewalk.

T: I think they should allow street vend-ing. It is a definite income-starter for working class people.

D: DID YOU HEAR ABOUT CLOSURE OF THE LA RECYCLING CENTER (960 N MAIN)?

T: Many of my friends use the recycling center for a supplement income, so the closure is going to have an impact on the community.

D: HOW DO YOU STAY COOL IN THE SUMMER?

L: I stay hydrated with water and car-ry a hydroflask with me. I know some people go to the beach.

2018 MIDTERM ELECTION

As the midterm election approaches, get ahead on your research. Among the matters that Chinatown will be voting:

• U.S. Senator• Congressional District 34

representative• California Governor• State Senate District 24

representative

Other California state executive offices, as well as local and statewide mea-sures will also be decided. Keep an eye out for candidate debates and forums to learn more about who and what you will be voting on.

WHY VOTE?

In American democracy, voters can decide on ballot measures and elect representatives to serve in government on our behalf. Public officials make policies and decisions that affect our daily lives, from education and housing to immigration and translation accessibility. Historically however, uneven voter participation rates across demographic groups have raised concerns about government represen-tation.

Visit www.lavote.net to check your reg-istration status, sign up to vote by mail, find your polling place, see what’s on the ballot, or register to vote. Califor-nians ages 16 and up may pre-register to vote when they turn 18.

About 309 people experience homelessness on any given night in Chinatown. In recent years, voters in LA City and County approved tax measures to address homelessness. “A Bridge Home” is an initiative of LA Mayor Eric Garcetti looking to move up to 1,500 homeless people into temporary supportive shelter in the next six months, with the ultimate goal of connecting individuals to permanent housing.

The first shelter is expected to open this summer at a parking lot near El Pueblo with 45 beds. It will also include services such as rehabilitation and job training. Several other sites are being considered, including a lot by the Homeboy Diner, just outside Chinatown.

As increased housing demand has driven up rents, many low-income individuals and families have become at risk of homelessness. While shelters help, communities emphasize the need to create more housing at affordable rents, and increase income with jobs and job training.

According to the Public Policy Institute of California, California became the first large majority-minority state after the 2000 Census. Asians and Latinos are today the fastest growing groups in the state. But while populations are increas-ing, lagging voter participation raises concerns that constituent interests, needs and values are not adequately reflected in government. At the same time, mo-bilizing voters in those groups that are historically underrepresented can swing elections.

WHAT DO WE VOTE ON?

Voters receive ballots based on where they live, pertaining to matters directly im-pacting them. For example, in the Novem-ber election, all California voters will be able to help decide on a new governor; but not all voters can vote in the race for State Senate District 24. Only residents living within impacted boundaries are able to vote for local representatives or ballot measures, such as special taxes or new policies.

OTHER PROJECTS

Many development projects are going on in and around Chinatown. While this can bring new housing and job opportunities, many residents express concerns about how larger developments may have neg-ative impacts, including stresses on local infrastructure like streets and emergency response. Some also point out that when new units are priced too high, local resi-dents are unable to afford and landlords may be encouraged to increase rents.

When I have time, I like going shopping and having morning tea. I feel like Chinatown is very convenient. I can get around without a car. Living here is very comfortable. I’d be willing to live here for the rest of my life. Now that China-town has a new park, I have another place to stroll.TOM T.

I grew up in Hong Kong and that’s part of why my partner and I moved to Chi-natown. The streets and restaurants and people here remind me of the place I happily once called home, and still think of that way.

DANIELLE

My grandparents live here. They came from Hong Kong in the 60s, and my mom grew up here. It was always fun exploring my grandparents basement for old family memorabilia. I browse even today! Over the past two years I found a great photo of my grand-parents, aunts, and mom on a front porch—she must have been around 3.

I was born in Chinatown and lived there with my extended family for half of my adult life. My mother and niece still live here. I visit regularly and always feel it is necessary to stay close to my roots. CONNIE

I was a worker in J town in the 60’s and 70’s. I have been active in Chinatown since the Yellow Brothers. I was a community youth worker. We followed Black Panther ideology to serve the people. We worked with prisoners, at-risk youth and drug addicts; did handyman work for the elderly and had a childcare program. We also worked with restaurant workers, the poor, and immigrants… [I remember] the tuff wars and rumbles between Alpine and Wah Ching gangs in the ’60s and ’70s. Major changes are that all the single old men and the hotels are both gone. There are a lot more women here now. And of course the gentrification every-where in Chinatown. All the monster structures, causing the rent to go up. MO

The pace at which new housing devel-opments are being built is quickening; I’m concerned about availability of affordable housing for many who cannot afford to live here. I’m thankful China-town is once again receiving well-de-served attention as an epicenter of art, food, and entertainment. But worry that if not properly managed, it could become a part of LA where only those with finan-cial means can play. JACK

This neighborhood gave haven to those from a distant world to feel welcomed. My memories here make up the founda-tion of my beliefs—if you work hard and have community support, then there’s nothing you can’t achieve. The devel-opment of Blossom Plaza has been a double edged sword—it brought more diversity to challenge the status quo, and I deeply admire the investment; but rent is exorbitant and obviously not targeted to the norm here. CARTER

Major changes occurred after the Vietnam War with the influx of migrants from Southeast Asia—Vietnamese, Chi-nese, Cambodian. That’s when houses started getting torn down and replaced by apartments… I’m concerned about housing for seniors. A lot of the new high rises are not for low-income or working middle-class. I’m concerned more people will be displaced due to gentrification.MARY ANNE

I like the fact that Chinatown has all the social services clubs like Alpine Recreation Center, Chinatown Service Center, 10K Firecracker, and all the different Chinese family associations.MARY ANNE

I grew up in Silverlake but my parents worked in Chinatown and I attended Chinese School on the weekends. I also frequented the Chinatown Library back when it was at Castelar. NGA

[A memory I have is] playing in Alpine when I was a student. Castelar didn’t have a playground until later in the school year. Students were sent across the street to Alpine for recess and lunch. PRINCIPAL FUNG

Since 2013, my family and I have been organizing Save Music in Chinatown shows at Human Resources and now the Grand Star… Of course, my wife and I love the kids, teachers, and staff at Castelar. That’s why we volunteer there so much. But we’ve increasingly found ourselves taking advantage of services at Alpine, along with other families It’s pretty cool how so many generations overlap and benefit from parks and rec programs.

MARTIN

[I remember] Alpine Park had low-cost classes for us, golf programs at Griffith Park, and basketball. During summers, there were free lunch programs at Cas-telar. I moved away for college, and now that I’m running my own NGO it’s important for me to move back. I also like the LA State Historic Park—it’s nice to see skyline of Downtown LA and get some fresh air. KIM

I have been coming to Alpine Park since 1997 with the Traditional Chinese Martial Art Federation, but have been coming to Chinatown since the 1970s. We like to meet up to practice the arts with friends. A documentary called “The Black Experience of Martial Arts” was filmed here in 2012, and we had our first event here in 2015 called “The Gathering of Masters.” We all enjoy each other’s company and often eat at The Full House on Hill. My favorite dish is the chicken pan fried noodles. They have the best chefs in town.

DONALD

I love going to Alpine Recreation Center to teach and practice martial arts and lion dancing to the youth... I also love going to Chinatown to socialize with the people there. WAYLAND

My other favorite place is the library. I’m a reader and children’s book writer, so of course I frequent libraries. I loved learning about Wanda’s long library career in an issue of WAPOW. Recently, she laughed at me because I dropped a loaned book in the bath while I was reading it and needed to re-place it. I’ve been able to donate books I get for free to Rita, the children’s librarian. She even made a holiday tree ornament with my book cover on it! I love that I can walk to the library from my apartment, loaded up with books to return on the way and books to read on the way back. I pass kids from Castelar after school, the endless line at Howlin Rays, my favorite store East/West, the

shoppers and sellers at markets, and all the people that make up Chinatown. DANIELLE

My earliest memory of Chinatown is Jan. 4, 1949 when Dr. Julius Sue slapped me on my butt when I popped out of my mother at the French Hospital. Chinatown is home. EUGENE

My connection to Chinatown started at birth. I was born on April 8, 1975 at French Hospital. The hospital that I was born is now closed; a huge develop-ment is set to take over the commu-nity. These things make me sad. The character of the community is changing but for who? I fear displacement for the community similar to what my family encountered in 1959 with the destruc-tion of their then-community of Palo Verde, La Loma, and Bishop in Chavez Ravine—not far from Chinatown.

I enjoy going to the Tse Clansman Asso-ciation. At night very few people go out because it doesn’t feel safe. Many large stores like Wing Hop Fung have closed and it started to get quiet. There are more Westerners now and others have started to leave. An annoyance is that Chinatown’s parking is inconvenient and the apartments are too expensive.MR. XIE

I love having the Los Angeles State Historic Park nearby. As soon as it reopened, I built regular walks and runs there into my weekly routine. CINDY

CHINATOWNAS MARKETPLACEWHETHER COMING FOR DIM SUM, FRIED CHICKEN, TOILET PAPER, GOLD JEWELRY OR KARAOKE DISCS, THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF CHINATOWN MAKES FOR EXCITING DINING AND SHOPPING EXPERIENCES REMINISCENT OF BAZAARS AND MARKETPLACES ABROAD.

Dim sum, bakeries, and pho restau-rants are regular places I patronize. The quality and authentic food makes Chinatown stand out. The changes I’ve noticed is more food options—Che-go, Howlin Rays, Burger Lord, etc. In addition, a lot more young and hip folks moving into the neighborhood. I love the change of having more diverse food to choose from. WAYLAND

I can speak Toisan to older ladies on the street. Best prices for fresh ginger. Comfort food. Best chicken bao any-where is at Family Pastry. EUGENE

As a child I remember eating dim sum at CBS, and visiting my grandparents, usually Sundays after church. My broth-er, cousins, and I would try to extend our time in the large dense shopping plazas. So much variety was exciting for a suburban kid like myself.

TIM

I lived in Lincoln Heights and grew up coming to Chinatown over the week-ends to shop for Cambodian foods. We often would stop at a food truck parked on Spring Street for a banh mi. Places I like to visit are Golden Lake Eatery for Cambodia food, Alpine Park, Saigon Alley, and sometimes my family and I would go to Thien Hau Temple on Yale Street. This is a place to connect with the Asian community. My family and I felt comfortable, at home, able to speak

in our native tongue. Plus this was the place to get poppers. SOPHANAROT

It’s fun to buy food and fruit on the streets! I remember going to Chinatown every weekend with my mom when I was growing up. It’s changed a lot since then. Many of the old shopping centers where we used to haggle for merchandise are out of business. I remember that walk-ing around Chinatown buying karaoke laser disks with my parents was a big pastime... the shopping centers used to be full of independent vendors selling everything you can think of. BETSY

I learned how to tie my shoes as a girl in Chinatown. I also remember loud Chinese music playing from different vendors who were selling cassette tapes and later CDs, as well as the cacophony

of sounds from electronic toys. I naturally gravitated toward the flipping toy dogs that were yammering for attention; being fascinated by the beautiful qi paos. I fantasized about my wedding day and when I’d get to wear one. My mother felt comfortable in Chinatown, which made me feel comfortable there as well. KRISTINA

The Empress Pavilion—now closed—was a landmark of my childhood. My family would visit once a weekend and partake in the craziness that is dim sum dining in a palatial restaurant housed on the top floor of an outdoor mall. At the time, I wasn’t much impressed by the austerity of the businesses, but now looking back I can appreciate the vibrancy that was tucked away in the top floor. There are secret communities in all parts of LA that are invisible from the street side but incredible once you find it in the interior guts of the building. JIA

I like buying cheap toilet paper at the swap meet on College and Spring. It makes me wonder why do stores charge so much for toilet paper? My favorite part of Chinatown are the fruit and vegetable vendors on Broadway. There’s so much variety and helps me save money. My parents live in a midwest suburb so they’re not a fan of busy Los Angeles. My dad is always a bit cranky when he comes to visit. But the last time they visited I took them to a new Chinese restaurant just a couple blocks from where I live, Full Moon House. The food was so yummy and cheap, it won my dad’s heart and belly. He finally found something in LA he enjoyed. We ate there a second time before they left. CINDY

I enjoy dining at Won Kok Restaurant and sweets from Phoenix Bakery—specif-ically the strawberry cake. I enjoy walk-ing down Broadway shopping with my children—and now grandson Andrew—buying them invisible ink, poppers, and taking in the rich culture while shopping. Chinatown is sacred to me because my great grandparents, grandparents, and now my children and grandson have all walked the same streets. The Arechiga bloodline over 120 years old on the streets of Chinatown. MELISSA

Philippe’s remains a family tradition for us to have a meal at least once a month, we also go for family birthdays and before any event we are attending down-town. Phoenix Bakery is a tradition for us for cakes celebrating a Baptism or First Communion. Also, the newly opened Oriel is a favorite spot for my wife and I. I like to walk around the plazas. The lanterns are beautiful and the warm sun make it very pleasant to spend my break. My dog loves the people, plants and other dogs as well. Chinatown is one of the few neighborhoods where you will see the same people on a daily basis, and it creates a sense of community for me. I remember eating at all the different restaurants in Chinatown, going to the market with my grandma for groceries, waiting in line at the bank, and seeing the same people who live and work here. This has stuck with me and is probably why I stick around, because it instills a sense of community that I think is rare in a big city. I’m afraid that our little neighborhood will turn into an Old Town Pasadena, which has mostly chain stores. JUDY

In the 70’s I use to come to watch Chinese Kung Fu movies at the Kim Sing Theater and two other theaters. Those movie reflect the Shoin technique, that’s what we practice at the park. DONALD

A memory that’s stuck with me is seeing Michael Jackson in Chinatown, in early 1984, near the Yee Sing Chong mar-ket on Hill Street. That was definitely exciting, of course, because he was such a superstar back then. I also took a picture with Jet Li at the Ocean Seafood Restaurant parking lot. “Lethal Weapon 4” was filmed around there. I also met

Hong Kong director/fight choreographer Cory Yuen there, on the same day. That was exciting of course, since I am a fan of Hong Kong movies. WARREN

I really love watching people take selfies in front of the Bruce Lee statue in a central Plaza. For a while I was taking a bunch of people taking pictures. It’s so human and universal to see everyone do it, it’s unifying to me. MACEO

I’ve been a business owner at East Meets West for 35 years. I never really go anywhere else because I have to be here to provide treatment. Herb shops in Chinatown are trustworthy. I refer my pa-tients for medicine for additional support. Chinatown has gotten cleaner and more beautiful over the years. I like to continue to see a variety of people with different languages coming in for acupuncture. This is when I get to practice my Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese and Japanese.

SHIAO

My family established a Chinese restau-rant in Chinatown in 1988. With 14-16 hour days, this is home. From our daily social and business interactions, we are proud to members of the community. Along with business ownership, our participation with the Teo Chow Associ-ation is an intricate part of our family’s preservation of our culture. CARTER

One of my favorite things about being a business owner in Chinatown is the opportunity to help and meet so many different people from around the world visiting Los Angeles. It’s incredibly exciting introducing people to traditional Chinese medicine through our herbal teas, dietary supplements, and beauty products. A couple times a week, I take a walk down Broadway to various bakeries to pick up an afternoon pastry or snack. It’s wonderful going to work in Chinatown everyday watching custom-ers, tourists, and other members of the community walk through our streets. Sad-

ly, I’ve seen many good friends close their stores recently. That being said, it’s always wonderful welcoming new business owners to the city. I spend most of my time at the Far East Plaza, which is the main food hub of Chinatown and the location of Scoops. I like the new restaurants and offices. I am not a fan of the new residential

buildings that are being constructed. It’s not an opposition to new residences be-cause I support market rate housing I just feel that the urban design and architec-tural qualities of the new developments has been less than inspiring. Chinatown needs new development and based on its proximity to Downtown proper, Union Station and the communities to the north it should grow but it needs more atten-tion and thought regarding what those developments look like. TOM M.

I love the galleries and shops along Chung King Road, the open atrium at Mandarin Plaza, every eatery at Far East Plaza, and walking LA State Historic Park. I like that within one neighborhood, I can dine, engage, people-watch, or disconnect from the world and meditate. The build-out of Endorffeine—watching a space transform from an empty room into an intimate coffee bar of my dreams was surreal.

JACK

I was thankful to work here, otherwise I wouldn’t have known about Chinatown. I like the coffee shop nearby, Burgerlords, and Wonder Bakery for their black milk boba, taro bread, and coconut bread. I like supporting independent businesses as opposed to chains. I like the architecture here. There’s always something happen-ing. I want more people to come here and experience Chinatown, know about it, participate, support, be respectful to the community... It’s a complex thing, the rela-tionship between artists and gentrification. Artists don’t make money, but there is sys-tematized racism. I don’t have the answer, but a place to start is research. TATIANA

Density and population is increasing, so they’re building more and more apart-ments, but facilities cannot support it. Grocery markets, like Lee’s Market on Hill and Alpine and 99 Ranch, have closed and never reopened. There is no parking, and landlords keep raising rent, so people and markets move out. The city does whatever—update health code and requirements, and it is difficult for small old places to adapt. ANONYMOUS SENIOR CITIZEN

For me Chinatown is not only a physical place but a state of mind. Perhaps because the Chinatown of my youth now only exists in memories. The neighborhood architecture has changed over time but these structures still offer distinct impressions because of decades-old events of that lived inside them. Today, it is sounds and smells for me that make Chinatown a real place, a thriving residential and business community. RICK

Another memory is when St. Anthony was building a new parish haul the Kolo Group (traditional Croatian dance) had nowhere to practice so for a while they practiced at the church hall at St. Peter’s—I remember feeling a bit out of place not being at St. Anthony but also the significance of these two old church-es both being in Chinatown and what that heritage means to our respective cultures. Also, not a personal memory, but one I find important is a program from our church event back in the 1950’s with advertisements from many local restaurants and business that were Croatian business such as the Yugoslav Cafe, Alpine Tavern, etc. Those places were replaced with business by the new Chinatown residents that were coming in at that time.

TOM M.

I had never been to Chinatown prior to January 2018. Once I interned at Chinese Historical Society of Southern California], I got to know the community through monthly meetings and by learn-ing the history of Old and New China-town [from]the archives and artifacts... Chinatown has a very rich culture and I was very lucky to have even a glimpse into the networks of the community... Apart from academics and research, special moments I experienced were lunches with my supervisors. I would sit down and eat local delicacies from restaurants in Chinatown. Whether it was dim sum or sandwiches, we got to sit and have casual lunch talking about sports, leisurely activities, and local happenings. To me, even the most basic/simple encounters leave great impressions. Getting to know China-town was one of the greatest opportu-nities I’ve ever had. I have grown up in Southern Orange County all my life and it has always felt like its own bubble to me. So traveling and experiencing life outside of that bubble is very liberating. JEANNETTE

I love visiting many of the small local businesses that have been around for

many years. As Miss Chinatown LA, I participated in various events like the Firecracker 10K, and numerous Chinese New Years celebrations. I think China-town has so much to offer as a place of cultural heritage and one of constant reinvention of its identity. Chinatown has definitely seen a mingling of historic traditions with a new generation of creators. I love the fact that there is a fusion between old and new. However, I think all members of the Chinatown community would benefit from greater collaboration amongst individuals and businesses. I think Chinese people are strong and independent but sometimes we need to remember that community is equally as important. I think Chinatown and its changing environment provides the perfect opportunity to see new collaboration amongst neighbors and businesses. CATHERINE

I’ve been concerned about mega devel-opment destroying cool old buildings, pushing out family businesses and affordable house, and encroaching on one of central L.A.’s last safe, welcom-ing neighborhoods for low-income immigrant and non-English speaking families. But in the face of this, I love that institutions like the Firecracker Run and Chinese New Year Parade live on, as well as seeing groups of people rise up to keep Chinatown culture alive—and that includes WAPOW!

CHINATOWN AS HERITAGE

ORIGINALLY INHABITED BY THE NATIVE TONGVA/GABRIELINO TRIBE, CHINATOWN HAS EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS—ENCOMPASSING AREAS ONCE KNOWN AS LITTLE ITALY, THE FRENCH QUARTER AND SONOR-ATOWN, AMONG OTHERS. AS WE MOVE FORWARD, HOW CAN WE ALSO BE STEWARDS OF OUR NEIGH-BORHOOD’S LAYERED HISTORIES?

It is my first year being involved in LA Chi-natown, as I grew up in St. Louis, MO. As part of the 2018 Miss LA Chinatown Court, I had to opportunity to attend loads of Chinese New Year celebrations throughout the month. I think I saw more lion dances in one month than I had in my entire life. It was amazing to grow so much closer to my heritage! The Golden Dragon Parade was probably my favorite because of the sheer amazing amount of people from different cultures that joined together for the event! I loved going to the Chinese American Museum for the Lantern Festival this year. It was interesting to walk through the exhibits and learn more about Chinese American history, because I grew up mixed (Chinese, Hungarian, and Moroccan) and never have had a chance to focus more deeply on just one part of my ethnic identity. JACLYN

The best time I have had in Chinatown is during the 1980s when we were able to celebrate Chinese New Years with tons of firecracker. The whole Broadway street would be two inches in height full of red paper (blown firecrackers). Everyone will be lighting and popping firecrackers all around. The Central Plaza stage is another great attraction. There would be Chinese Lion Dancing, Fan Dancing, Martial Arts, Ballet, etc. I vividly remember this because I enjoy the Chinese New Year festivities a lot. WAYLAND

My dad, the late Bill Hong, used to light up a long string of firecrackers at the end of the L.A. Golden Dragon Parade. That was always an exciting ending to the Golden Dragon Parade. WARREN

My strongest memories are the Chinese Drum and Bugle Corp; the dragon with Christmas lights, firecracker and lion dances in the Chinese New Year Parade; the carnivals from back in the day. What was so important was that the Chinese American community support-ed these cultural events. It is sad that not many younger Chinese Americans support the cultural events now. When the general public looks through the Chinatown window, it appears Chinese Americans are not very involved or con-nected to the culture. We need to honor the leaders of the past and promote our cultural heritage.

The Lunar New Year Celebration sur-prised me, because I didn’t know about it, and there was a lot of traffic. I’m a graphic designer, so I noticed all the red envelopes, the colors used, how they were used, the branding, and seeing people celebrate their culture. A couple of weekends ago, I went from March For Our Lives to Chinatown. In a walk, you can experience both things. People who were selling food, clothes, who couldn’t go to the march. March For Our Lives TATIANA

Some of my favorite memories have been from the first year of opening Scoops. Being at the shop from open to close every day was like a full China-

town immersion experience. I met so many residents from the neighborhood who would become regulars and friends. Also, being part of events like the Moon Festival, the Chinese New Year celebration, CicLA-via, the Firecracker runs, and the China-town Summer Nights series contributed to that feeling and were all highlights from that first year. I definitely appreciate Chi-natown’s rich culture of art and music. I’ve spent countless nights at Human Resourc-es, which often has stellar performances and exhibitions. At Grand Star Jazz Club, the Save Music in Chinatown benefit shows for Castelar that happen every few months are indicative of how much heart and fun the community has. CHRIS

OUR FUTURE CHINATOWNKeeping the identity of Chinatown, and making the housing affordable for families. The faces of Chinatown have changed. It’s not as family friendly with the new apartments. PRINCIPAL FUNG

I hope to see a Chinatown communi-ty that is heavily involved (I believe it already is), and more family housing/houses where generations can continue to grow and expand Chinatown. JEANNETTE

I am proud of Chinatown. The children of migrants need to look around, acknowl-edge our culture, our history, and our soul. My dream is for us to build a multi culture that includes the poor, the work-ing class, the elderly, the single parent, the youth, and all in the oppressed sec-tion to incorporate a community that has a direction. I would like to see “People over Profit.” MO

I’s like to see more community organizing from a grassroot level and continue to see young people volunteering to acti-vate spaces. My hopes for Chinatown is not only to survive, but to thrive. Afford-able housing for people, so people won’t have to move out… I want more visibility, instead of becoming a tourist place. I like to see more upgrades in Alpine Park and want to see all those who grew up here, be able to afford living here.

SOPHANAROT

There’s a large part of me that hopes Chinatown stays mostly the same—work-ing class, immigrant, with a strong sense of community. My primary concern is gentrification and displacement, it’s al-most to the point that we can’t take care of each other because we’re all getting priced out. JASMINE

I hope that the next generation of Chi-natown is what it has always been—a new group coming in there to realize there hopes of the American dream. I hope that the community that influences things today can keep in mind that it has always been an immigrant community internationally and now Los Angeles is a community largely of migrants from across the United States. LA is always changing and Chinatown is especially. TOM M.

The potential change that would worry me would be a situation similar to other neighborhoods in LA in which housing

prices rise and community displacement occurs. I feel like there is a drive in Chi-natown to have conversations about this and what can be done to prevent that, which makes me hopeful. CHRIS

The senior citizens need to be here Elderly access and public services need to stay, because Chinatown is centrally located and accessible. Some changes I’d like to see are facilities for young peo-ple and senior citizens to hang around. ANONYMOUS SENIOR CITIZEN

I have seen new energy and new life in Chinatown, introducing younger people to a place of historical significance... I want to see myself living here in the long term. I want to see a lot of younger people come back and be active. KIM

I would like to see more development designed to complete the walking path at the Cornfields, which was part of the original plan. I would like to see that se-niors have more access to the park with a shuttle bus to for them. I would like to see more buildings for seniors, more funding for programs at Alpine Park. I would like to see the monster buildings become open air pop ups for culture and food and ping pong and community organizations. CONNIE

My hopes for Chinatown is in the growth and development for our aging communi-ty. The East Wind Lion Troupe is a sensa-tional example of what/how our heritage is being actively preserved and taught. It is one of the most awe inspiring organi-zations out there. Also the development of temples and associations define a further active measure of preservation. CARTER

I see great potential for public officials to consult local Chinatown-based non-prof-its who have been doing effective

outreach and engagement for years. Decision-makers must meaningfully engage with community members about the assets and needs of Chinatown. Long-time community members are the experts, and know the neighborhood intimately in ways decision-makers don’t. We need to listen to the people. TIM

There are definitely more restaurants and art galleries in the last two years. I like having more dining options, but I would actually like to see more Asian dining options rather than Western. There are several new housing developments going up all around Chinatown... I wish Chi-natown would be a creative context for Asian American artists and chefs. I hope that the new restaurants and galleries we see could reflect the creativity of a new Asian American generation of entrepre-neurs. CINDY

More local facilities for people who live here, access to markets, a movie theater, bowling... entertainment for local people. There are no locals walking around here after 6 pm, like in Little Tokyo. MO

I’d like to see families and businesses stick around to carry on the tradition and culture of Chinatown—not just food, gift shops, societies, and social services but also the arts—to retain agency in the neighborhood and serve and affect future generations. MARTIN

There’s not one single place that captures Chinatown for me but it is certainly the mix of formal and informal (especially in-formal) qualities about the neighborhood that makes it such an important place in Los Angeles. I hope that these informal qualities are protected and given a place to exist alongside the more recent and shiny urban development, otherwise this neighborhood will become super generic. JIA

My hopes for Chinatown are for many more people to come visit our beautiful area. Our business is celebrating 25 years, and I hope to stay here another 25. It’s fantastic going to Chinatown everyday and seeing new people walk the streets and into our store. With my son coming out to Chinatown more frequently, I hope he has the opportunity to experience the beauty of the city even more. I hope our beautiful neighborhood remains a focal point of history and beauty for many generations to come. LOK

I have not been around long enough to see the major changes, but I view the current Chinatown as a great blend of traditional/modern ideals and style. to both subtle and seismic transforma-tions that often seem cruel, unfeeling and merciless. I have great admiration for preservationists but nostalgia even with its charms has its limits; I think it could be a prison for progress and prosperity. I hope to see Chinatown grow as a place where people of different gener-ations and of different demographics can come together to celebrate diversity and history.

The environment is better but stranger, with more youngsters speaking English instead of Toisanese and Vietnamese. One way or another, I hope the future Chinatown can pass down through the generations.LAURA

WHAT ABOUT THE KIDS?

Oral histories are an awesome way to dig into the past. I love it when overlapping generations share stories and memories that connect, deepen, or even conflict with one another. The prism of truths that make up the past is made just a little bit clearer.

But what about the kids? Not shaded by misplaced nostalgia or afraid of what it is to come, they might pro-vide the most honest views of all. My fourth-grade daughter and I surveyed a handful of Castelar and Alpine kids regarding what they like most about Chinatown and touched on their hopes for the neighborhood.

Predictably, Castelar Elementary and Alpine Recreation Center are cited often, as are Jade Wok, Pho 87, and Golden Dragon. But Disneyland and Target? The former isn’t far from the origins of New Chinatown and the latter may become reality sooner than later. You can’t hide the truth from children.

The daily physical and psychological stresses that come with city life can easily tip our health from good to imbalanced. We are often not conscious of our developing conditions until we are faced with a health-related surprise. I would know—four years ago at age 29, I was diagnosed with prediabetes.

At the time, I was five years into my career as a pastry chef, employed by a very popular and busy restaurant. As I worked hard to move up professionally, my sense of equilibrium was being disrupted. I skipped meals to work more and ate foods with very little nutritional value—”I’m starving and my coworker brought donuts!” Allowing my blood sugar to fluctuate wildly did not help, especially since as an Asian, I am genetically more inclined to develop Type 2 diabetes. Not to mention Type 2 runs in my mom’s side of the family.

My high blood sugar warning pushed me to question what a balanced lifestyle should look like. I grew curious about herbal remedies and as I sought out information on Chinese medicine for routine care, I was reminded of the principles of yin yang. As a kid growing up in So Cal in the 90s, the yin yang symbol was ubiquitous. My best friend got us a matching yin yang necklace set, and I have a vague memory of my older brother Josh in a screen-printed yin yang surfer tee. I bet you’ve seen plenty of yin yangs printed on objects, or tattooed on people. But what’s its meaning?

Yin yang translates directly as shade and light. It is the phi-losophy of continuous balance between opposites. The circle symbolizes a universe wherein yin and yang coexist harmo-niously. In Eastern medicine, our bodies are mini universes in which dual forces of nature manifest both in our physical being and mental state. Disturbed harmony from lack of sleep, poor communication, inadequate nourishment through diet, or decreased physical activity, can all lead to ailments. Embracing yin yang for health is to embrace preventative care, mindfulness and healing. I invite you to join me! Let’s enter the consciousness of the continuous rhythmic interplay of yin yang.

FINDING BALANCE

1. Set a kettle to boil water. Meanwhile select flowers and berries and set in tea-pot or large mug with a lid handy. Use a strainer in the tea cup if you like.

2. When water reaches a boil, allow to settle a few seconds before pouring over flowers and berries. Cover and steep for at least 5 minutes before en-joying. Strain and stir in honey if using.

Also delicious cool or chilled. Reserve flowers and berries for resteeping.

My first memory of being served chry-santhemum tea was as a kid at a dim sum restaurant. It had such a unique taste and was pleasantly refreshing. In the heat of summer, I find myself longing for that soothing tea. At Tin Bo Ginseng and Herb, I was met by Wu Yun, who assisted me and also shared that the herb naturally supports liver function.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 Tbsp dried chrysanthemum flow-ers, about 8 blossoms

• 8 goji berries • 8-12 oz water, start with less and

add more to dilute• Honey to taste, optional

CHRYSANTHEMUM FLOWER & GOJI BERRY HERBAL TEA
