INTRODUCTION

THE FIRST TIlESIS written and accepted at the University of Hawai' i in partial fulfillment for an advanced degree (Master of Science) was in 1914. Nine years later in 1923, Robert Aitken completed the first University of Hawai 'j thesis pertaining to the Pacific Islands. His was also the first Master's of Arts thesis accepted at the University of Hawai' i. To date over 300 doctoral dissertations and master's theses have been completed that contain research relating to the Pacific Islands region. The following list is a bibliography of all of those works.

Scope All dissertations and theses completed at the University of Hawai'i through 1993 were examined. Only works pertaining to the Pacific Islands were selected for this list. Excluded were works on Hawai'i. However, if a work covered Hawai'i and other Pacific regions, it was included. (The Special Collections staff of the University of Hawai'i Library compiles an annual list of all University of Hawai' i dissertations and theses. For information regarding this publication, write to: Dissertations & Theses, Hawaiian Collection, at the address below.)

Arrangement The main list is arranged geographically. In cases where a work covers substantially more than one area, the citation has been repeated under each area. For example, a work on Samoa, Vanuatu, and Fiji has been listed under each of these geographic designations. Indexes by author and title provide access to specific works. In addition, a Field of Study index provides a limited type of subject access.

Entry Format Each entry gives the following information:

Item # Author. Title. Date. Pagination. (Degree-Field of Study) University of Hawaii Library call number

• = Available from University Microfilms International

Item # is used in indexes to refer back to the entry

v

Works identified by an asterisk (*) are available from University Microfilms International, 300 N. Zeeb Road, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48106.

Copies of all dissertations and theses are deposited in Hamilton Library's Hawaiian Collection. However, inquiries regarding interlibrary loans, microfilming (or microfiche), or photocopying should be addressed to:

both at the address below.

Updates to this list will be included as an annual supplement to the Pacific Collection's acquisitions list. For more information, please direct inquiries to: Lynette Furuhashi, Editor, Pacific Acquisition List, at the following address:
