Our Synod is offering a wonderful opportunity titled The Collaborative: Stronger.Better.Together. With our congregation having been in a time of transition the last several years, Council felt a revitalization of the congregation is needed - this happens to be the initiative of The Collaborative! The timing is perfect for us! Their mission is to equip leaders and their communities of faith to build relationships, deepen faith, grow community, and identify and respond to God’s call for their congregation. It is an 18 month long journey of discovery, assessment, and action, facilitated by 4 training sessions offered every 6 months. In order to begin to revitalize our congregation, the Synod has developed a short survey which will be available September 8th and 15th in the Narthex. This survey is to evaluate where we are as a congregation at the current time. It will allow the leaders who attend the workshops to make the most of their time during the training. On the 16th, the surveys will be given to Pastor Katie Kerrigan at the Synod who will compile our results, evaluate where we are as a congregation and then present the results to the entire congregation on September 22nd during the education hour as well as after the 11:15 service. Also, Pastor Kerrigan will be worshiping with us on September 22nd during each service, so please give her a huge, warm welcome! I look forward to this opportunity and working with the congregation to first see where we are as a congregation and then move forward to revitalize in order to reach more people with the love of Jesus Christ! Please feel free to e-mail, call or text me with questions! Christie Burger [email protected] (937) 545-8143

Are you handy?

We need to put up an L-shaped fence around the dumpsters (will be moved to where the Alliance Choir trailer sits) We plan to get the fence materials, however, we’re hoping a few people in the congregation would be willing to help during one weekend to put the fence up. It will be 3 vinyl panels (6' x 8') and we will have to dig 4 holes for fence posts, hoping to finish this project by the end of September. Contact Christie Burger by phone (937) 545-8143 or e-mail at [email protected].

Farewell and Thank You for letting me Serve You

With my final Parish Business Administrator article, I just want to thank you for allowing me to serve the Lord of Life community. It has been a real pleasure knowing many of you in the Congregation in many different forums. I refer to Spring and Fall Clean Up Days, Council, Safety Committee, the Ushers, Wonderful Wednesdays, painting various places in the church, hiring committee, the new Web Site planning group, etc. Many of you freely volunteer your time to make Lord of Life Lutheran Church a special place.

I’d also be remiss if I didn’t say what a wonderful staff we have. Their dedication and selfless devotion to getting things done makes me proud to be a part of this staff. I am going to miss them.

I also can’t say enough about Bob and Jane Price for all their time and efforts assisting me with property maintenance. From painting the playground fence under a sweltering summer sun to replacing light bulbs and light fixture ballasts on a semi-routine basis, the Price’s have been there. I also must mention John Peterson and all his work with the church telephone, Fishbowl, Sanctuary lights, Wi-Fi, etc. Many, many, many hours of volunteering is so much appreciated.

I also want to thank those of you who decided a Parish Business Administrator was a good idea and pushed to hire a PBA. I also want to thank those involved with hiring me. I have enjoyed my job and hopefully have left Lord of Life Lutheran Church in better shape from a property, human resources, operational policy, and technology standpoint.

I know there are so many others who do so much for the church with their time, talents, and treasures. If I tried to mention every volunteer I have had the pleasure of working with I would miss some, so I won’t even try. God Bless you all! I wish you the best and if you are ever down Costa Rica way let me know!

Tuesday Afternoon Bible Study

All of us have experienced anger, both anger with someone or something or on the other side, some has anger with us. It is a common emotion. Perhaps you have experienced anger with God.

In September we are looking at the topic of anger using a few of the Psalms (41, 51, 69 and 137). We will consider vengeance vs. revenge and justice vs. retribution. We will look at the stewardship of our emotions, especially anger. Also, we will talk of anger management techniques that can dissolve and resolve a problematic situation. Furthermore, we will discuss whether we are leading the life we want to live through the stewardship of our emotions.

There is going to be strong discussion and reflection this month and we invite you to join us. We meet the first and third Tuesdays of the month in the Fishbowl at 1:30. We love new members! If you have questions, contact Cyndee Schoenhoff in Realm.

Panera Book Club

Please join the Panera Book Club on Sundays during the education hour at Panera Bread down the street from LoL at 2750 Martin Road Dublin 43017. The group's next book will be "Heaven Is For Real” by Todd Burpo and will start on September 1st. Please have the first two chapters read for that day to begin discussion. ALL ARE WELCOME TO JOIN ANY TIME!

Adult Faith Formation Opportunity!

One of the opportunities to provide for Faith Formation is through educational opportunities where we can hear and share our questions and thoughts on various topics. Beginning Sunday, September 15th at 10:15 am in Room 205, we hope you will join us in exploring the Reformation Roots. Each session, we will watch a short video and then discuss how it fits or changes what we know and how it impacts our church and the world today. See you then!

Please join us:

Adult Affirmation Class

Martin Luther famously wrote, “This life, therefore, is not righteousness, but growth in righteousness … not being, but becoming.” He understood that discipleship is not something we learn as kids, but something we are figuring our whole life long.

Beginning Sept. 29 we are offering an Adult Affirmation group to run parallel to our youth Affirmation program. We will cover the same topics (the Apostles’ Creed, Worship, The Commandments, etc. ) but from the more seasoned perspective of one who has lived and wrestled with these topics awhile.

Whether you are the parent of an Affirmation student, never went through a “catechism” program, or are just interested in further exploring the basics of our faith, this group is for you. We will meet in room 309 (across from the offices) at 10:15 am. The class will be led by Pastor Martin & Jerry Nelms.

AFFIRMATION CLASS

Today Sunday, September 15 and all Sundays in September

Our new Wi-Fi system!

Lord of Life is officially rolling out a new and improved Wi-Fi system accessible throughout our building, This comes as a byproduct of networking upgrades which will better support our meetings and faith formation needs as we look toward the future ministries of our community.

Here is the information to use the Wi-Fi on your device:

1. Go where you select Wi-Fi networks on your device

2. Select the network: LOL

3. On the “Landing Page” that opens, click “terms of service” and read them, then click the checkbox to agree to the terms of service and click “Connect”.

4. You will be asked for a password, which is: dojustice

Then your device should be connected to the Internet through our Wi-Fi.

For questions, please contact John Peterson or Ben Buss, call the church office at 614-889-2292, or email [email protected]

Coffee Ministry

Lord of Life’s guiding principles are extravagant

grace, radical inclusion, and relentless

compassion. One way that we live out those

principles is through hospitality: a kind word and

a fresh cookie make a pleasant welcome!

If you have the spiritual gifts of hospitality and

service, consider helping us add a fourth principle

to the Big Three: extravagant grace, radical

inclusion, relentless compassion… and cheerful

caffeination!

To find out more, contact Bill Roberts at in Realm

or talk to a coffee volunteer on Sunday.

Illuminati To Perform in Worship Sept 29

Illuminati, the sacred music ensemble of the Columbus Gay Men's Chorus, will provide music for our 9 AM service on Sunday, September 29, 2019.

The ensemble was established over 15 years ago by members of the Chorus who wanted to sing in faith-based celebration with houses of worship that accept everyone as part of God's creation and plan. Illuminati is the nation's only LGBTQ-identified chorus to focus on sacred music. Illuminati provides service music to at least one church or synagogue

each month during a season of the Columbus Gay Men's Chorus. CGMC was founded in 1990 to support and represent LGBTQ individuals through a voice of sung music pursuing the mission of "Voices Raised, Lives Changed." This month marks the start of their 30th season. Lord of Life has supported CGMG over the years by hosting the Chorus in the final performance of its holiday concert, Joy!, which, this year, will be Sunday, December 15.

First Gifts to Jesus Nominations

We, First Gifts ministry, are seeking nominations for possible recipients of our First Gifts to Jesus. In the past, we have gathered crock pots & cookbooks for First English, bought an industrial toaster for Faith Mission, donated to an agency assisting with new immigrants, bought freezers for the Smokey Row food pantry and donated gift cards to Choices. Think big or small...

We are asking for your ideas to be emailed to Donna Leitzel at [email protected] by October 6, 2019.

A Note from the Parish Business Administrator – My Final Bravo Zulu

Bravo Zulu, also referred to as "BZ," is a naval signal, typically conveyed by flaghoist or voice radio, meaning "Well Done" with regard to actions, operations or performance. So I’d like to offer the final “BZ” before I retire to Bob Price for volunteering many hours of his time to helping out around the church, saving thousands of dollars that would otherwise be spent on repairs and maintenance. Here are Bob’s latest volunteer efforts: -Repaired the ceiling at the entrance into the Sanctuary where the water leak was. -Painted the walkway, ramp, stairs, and wooden slats of the Annex where OneBody meets with extra textured deck over paint. -Touched up the wooden fence around the playground with extra textured deck over paint. He also performed touch up painting on the playground structure itself. -Cleaned out deteriorating cement or concrete and repaired with fresh cement/concrete in the following areas: -One of the pillars outside the main door to the Discipleship Wing -Curb area back by the outside equipment shed -Curb and sidewalk area near the parking lot that leads to the Discipleship Wing -Small patch of sidewalk near the church office entrance -After getting permission from the property owner next door where the large tree fell over in a storm, sawed branches away from the areas closest to the street so that vehicles leaving the parking lot could have better visibility and avoid a potential accident situation Bob has been my right hand man in when it comes to maintenance work and it is much appreciated! Please thank Bob when you see him.

I would be remiss if I didn’t also note the excellent job John Peterson has done with getting our Wi-Fi system set up. John has spent many, many hours on this project and it is ready to be rolled out. Look for more about the new Wi-Fi system in this issue of the Weekly Reader.

What Is Stephen Ministry? Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2, NRSV).

Stephen Ministry is the one-to-one lay caring ministry that takes place in congregations that use the Stephen Series system. Lord of Life is a Stephen Ministry Congregation. Stephen Ministry congregations equip and empower lay caregivers—called Stephen Ministers—to provide high quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting.

Stephen Ministers

Stephen Ministers provide Christ-centered care. People hurting due to relationships (family, friends, God, etc.), situations (employment, health, finances, life, etc.), life-impacting decisions (moving one’s home, changing a personal priority, etc.) and other “real” life non-understandable events/situations.

Care Receivers

Care Receivers…. anyone (friend, neighbor co-worker, relative, you) going through a difficult time—emotionally, spiritually, or relationally. Are you lonely, experiencing a crisis, or simply stressed by everyday life? All including names are very confidential.

OUR MISSION

To reach people with

the love of Jesus Christ.

OUR VISION

Lord of Life Lutheran Church is a community of Christ where we experience God's grace, comfort and acceptance through each other. From here, everyone is empowered to share, teach and give what each has received.

OUR VALUES

1. The Gospel calls us to unconditional regard for all people.

2. Prayer is necessary for our relationship with God, one another, and the world.

3. Scripture provides the foundation for our lives of faith.

4. The authority for our ministry is founded in Jesus Christ, the head of the Church which is the Body of Christ on earth. An elected Congregation Council provides administrative authority; our called pastor (s) provides the spiritual authority of the Office of Word and Sacrament Ministry.

5. Each member is uniquely gifted by God for ministry and is expected to mature in discipleship of Jesus Christ.

6. Any ministry based on our Mission, Vision and Core Values is valid for our congregation, and may, at any time, evolve or end.
