APPROVED!Public Plazas Coming To Sunnyside

At its monthly full board meeting,Queens Community Board 2 voted to ap-prove the proposal to create two Sunnysidepublic plazas under the elevated 7 train.Sunnyside Shines applied to the NYC De-partment of Transportation’s (DOT) PlazaProgram last summer with strong supportfrom our local elected officials, residents, property owners, business owners and com-munity organizations.

The two plazas, the Lowery Plaza (at40th Street) and the Bliss Plaza (at 46thStreet) will be improved with the installa-tion of several planters in each site as wellas moveable tables and chairs. In the BlissPlaza, DOT will level the surface to createone even space, similar to the level spacecurrently in the Lowery Plaza. SunnysideShines will be responsible for maintainingthe space, including the tables, chairs, plants and planters.

What does this mean for Sunnyside?

Well, construction is expected to start soon, and the plazas are expected to be open thissummer! This means that we’ll have twonew public spaces in the neighborhood forresidents, shoppers and passersby to sit downand enjoy an outdoor lunch, catch up on agood book or participate in an occasionalpublic event in the plazas.

We are very excited about these publicspace improvements coming to Sunnyside, and are extremely grateful to the communityleaders who supported our application. Thankyou to Council Majority Leader Jimmy VanBramer, Community Board 2 Chair JoeConley, Queens Borough President MelindaKatz, Senator Michael Gianaris, Congress-man Joe Crowley and several communityorganizations, residents, businesses and prop-erty owners who have supported this ideaover the last year. We did it!

Stay tuned for more information on theopening of the plazas.

Site of the future BlissPlaza - improvements likeplanters, moveable tables& chairs and an evensurface to come!

St. Sebastian’s Parish center in Woodside treated the Scouts of Pack 390 Woodside, their siblings and parents for a dip in their pool on Saturday, May 31st. Lead by Cub Master,Marvin Jeffcoat, the Scouts covered the requirements to earn a Swimming belt loop, whichinvolved learning the rules of Safe Swim Defense, the buddy system and completing the 100yard swim test.Cub Scouts Pack 390 Woodside is chartered by St. Teresa’s Roman Catholic church andthe organization is grateful for the generous consideration by St. Sebastian’s to providethe boys the opportunity to attain their Swimming achievement at their center.

The intention of the contest is to advanceand highlight the creative and academic skillsof the youth and is one of many initiatives theKiwanis Club holds annually for the benefitof the neighborhood’s children. The essayswere read by a panel of Kiwanis membersand graded from first to third place for eachgrade submitted in each school. A grandprize-winner was then selected from a blindsubmission and review of all the first placewinners. Attending the luncheon at the Club’sexpense were all the first place grade win-ners, their parents, and a school staff repre-sentative. Several of the Kiwanis memberswere present to cheer for each award recipi-ent. Dr. Chris Kitson and Kiwanis ClubPresident Carol Masiello presented each ofthe awardees with a certificate, a scholarshipmedal, and a Staples gift card courtesy of theKiwanis Club of Sunnyside while Club Trea-surer Jerry Lederman took photos of all thehonorees. The Grand Prize winner had theadditional distinction of having his nameand school engraved on a special perpetualtrophy cup which akin to the Stanley Cupwill be kept by the Grand Prize winner’sschool for a year until next year’s contestvictor is announced.

The essays portrayed both the pros andcons of the proliferation of social mediaoutlets and their effect in our society here inthe United States and globally. It wasinteresting to note that although just aboutevery student who wrote an essay usedsocial media sites and applications, not ev-eryone believed their effects were positiveand some felt youth of their age should notbe accessing this type of media. First placegrade winners this year for the respectiveschools were: PS 199Q- Mahesa Miah (4th);PS 150Q- Reshab Khan (6th); IS 125Q-Prachee Sarkar (5th), Kreetana Bhusal (6th),Sameeha Gani (7th) and Inhyuk Jun (8th);The Razi School- Alif Rahman (5th),Muhammed Mahdi Abdulkarim (6th),Abiha Kazmi (7th) and Nuzhat Wahid (8th);Saint Sebastian’s School- Ridita Ekram(5th), Mary Muir (6th), Hikaru Jitsukawa
