WOODSTOCK 1969

Here at ABSOLUTE ROCKS we pay homage to the originator, the mother of all music festivals, the one that is still talked about, documented and remembered to this day. In August 1969 500,000 people rocked up to a dairy farm in Bethel USA to attend the WOODSTOCK MUSIC & ART FAIR. It was here where 32 leading and emerging musicians performed at one of the greatest events in music history. The Who, The Band, Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jefferson Airplane, Ten Years After, Joan Baez, Santana, Joe Cocker, and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young all took to the stage and then made history.

WOODSTOCK 2019

Michael Lang, the original co-creator of Woodstock 69,as revealed plans for a possible 50th anniversary concert in 2019. Lang also said an annual Woodstock festival could happen beyond the 50th anniversary. Speaking about how the time is right, Lang added: “[Woodstock] is the original and most famous festival brand.” He continued, “With the prevalence of festivals out there, and all the excitement about them, maybe it’s time for that,” referring to an annual concert driven by the Woodstock name. Woodstock is world renowned, all eyes will be waiting to read the line-up for 2019…we are ready, are you?

THE GRATEFUL DEAD

So, The Grateful Dead…never could a band be more fitting to play Woodstock. Heavily influenced by Psychedelia, Blues, Soul, Folk and of course Rock n Roll! However, The Grateful Dead’s set was sadly cut short due to heavy rain which flooded the stage. Band members were actually getting electric shocks when they played their instruments or tried to sing in the microphone. They managed 95 minutes on stage and ended with “Turn On Your Lovelight’ (or should that have been turn OFF your light!). Regardless of all this, The Grateful Dead are still regarded as one of the best live bands of all time.

WE’RE WITH ‘THE BAND’ Best known for their Folk Rock sound, The Band played Woodstock on the Sunday around 10pm. They had only one album under their belt at the time (even though they had been around for many years) but ‘Music from the Big Pink’ had already achieved cult status and so they played 7 songs from the album and for the encore, ‘Weight’ which was the track made famous by the classic movie Easy Rider. The Band are also linked with Bob Dylan having toured with him before and after Woodstock. Since then their career saw them inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1989 and in 2004 Rolling Stone Ranked them No 50 on its list of 100 Greatest Artists of all Time. In 2008 they also received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Her strong performance included tracks from her first solo album, ‘I Got Dem Ol Kozmic Blues Again Mama!’ and her encore included ‘Piece of My Heart’. Since her death, Janie Joplin’s albums have gone Gold, Platinum and Triple-Platinum. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.
