1 October 28 th 2018 Words by the German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) following the Nazis' rise to power First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. . As Christians, along with many others, we are called upon to do the speaking out… we know of brave people who rescued or hid people during the persecution of Jews and other groups in the 2 nd WW . Living now in relative peace, we may think we don’t need to say or do anything about any issues that don’t seem to affect us, but we are urged to seek for justice in this world: to love our neighbour as ourselves. We are the ones left to speak out. Jesus says, I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. So if you aren’t interested in seeking justice or in loving one another in practice, if you don’t really like to be challenged with the unpleasantness of slavery today, then, as they say on the news when announcing the football scores I suggest you look away or block your ears now! I am going to briefly mention what modern slavery is, give an example and offer at least one way we might respond as Christians. Firstly what is modern Slavery? Some of the ways people are enslaved today include prostitution, pornography, manufacturing, domestic servitude, forced begging, and organ removal. Modern slavery happens in all parts of the world, including the UK, even though some people don’t think it is here or an issue. In 2016, 3805 men, women and children were rescued from modern slavery in the UK but there are estimated today to be 11,700 victims of modern slavery. Many people who end up being enslaved are looking for legitimate work.
