Why have Work Experience?• Provides students with an insight into different sectors and

careers•

• Gives them the opportunity to use and apply their skills and knowledge in a professional environment.

• Helps students develop of ‘employability skills’ - sometimes called ‘soft skills’ – that are required not only in the workplace, but in life. These include:

– Communication– Working with others – Problem solving

• Builds confidence and self-esteem by showing students what they can achieve outside school.

• Allows students to ‘try out’ an area of potential interest.

• Provide an opportunity to network - in some cases the company may wish to recruit you later on!

Why is Work Experience so important?Seven…It’ll help you identify your own skills and perhaps even highlight the areas that you might want to work on.

Eight…You might wow them so much that you’ll manage to get yourself a job!

Nine…It’s all about networking. It will help with gaining contacts.

Ten…And yes, work experience does give you something to put on your CV!

Why is it important to arrange your placement early?

• All good placement get taken early• 15 other secondary schools in

Norwich that will be asking for placements

• If a placement isn’t arranged you will stay in school

• When applying for jobs you will be asked about your work experience

Finding Placements• We would ask that you discuss possible

placements with your parents/carers.

• Most employers will have taken students from a number of schools for many years and have well established practices.

• All participating employers need to complete a form the online form.

Support AvailableThroughout the year, form tutors and the Year 10 team have been monitoring how well students are progressing with finding themselves a placement and will be the first point of contact for any queries about work experience.

If you are unsure about how to approach an employer, please go the academy (www.ormistonvictoryacademy.co.uk/careers-guidance/work-experience/) or Work Experience Google Classroom where further guidance can be found. On this page we have included videos and advice on how to speak to an employer via telephone.

Students may also make appointments with our Careers Adviser for help with finding a work experience placement, or drop-in to see Mr Arger, Careers Leader in Seminar 2. To book an appointment, students may email [email protected].

Employers Guide/Self-Placement Form

• Once a placement has been found, please send the employer a link to the online form on our website for them to complete the placement details: www.ormistonvictoryacademy.co.uk/workexperience

• This link has been included in the A5 ‘Employers Guide to Work Experience’ which should also be sent or handed to the employer. Alternatively, there are paper forms available from Student Services if your chosen employer would prefer this.
