Hello everyone With the children not at school on ANZAC Day nor the following day, we held our ANZAC commemoration over the PA system last Friday. School Captains Chloe and Henry did an excellent job sharing a brief history of what ANZAC stands for and also related ANZAC values to the way we can live our lives today. The teachers reported that they were very impressed with the reverence all the children demonstrated throughout the ceremony. Charlie Banias and Ava Booth, together with a number of extremely helpful Grade 5 children, supported the ANZAC Appeal by selling ANZAC biscuits at each of the breaks and again after school. This was a successful fundraiser which we estimate added well over $100 to the monies we raised selling ANZAC badges and wristbands. Thank you for your initiative and organisational efforts Charlie and Ava, and thank you to their band of helpers who assisted during the day. After enjoying a long weekend (wasn’t the weather beautiful!), we hope the majority of families were able to meet with their chil- dren’s teachers at the Parent –Teacher Interviews on Tuesday. The feedback from the teachers and the few parents I have spoken to is that the day was most successful. The interviews provided an excellent opportunity for the teachers to share observations and assessments about the children’s progress thus far this year, and for the parents to share information about the children or seek clari- fication about the programs and expectations from the school’s perspective. We are growing continually optimistic about the communication channels opening up for us through Sentral. While we are aware there were a few anomalies encountered when booking for Parent Teacher Interviews, on the whole the process worked well. At the interviews, parents should have received information regarding the use of the Sentral Parent Portal ‘Messaging’ feature. We hope this medium will replace notes or diary entries as the prime form of communication between home and school and vice-versa. Please have a go at employing this facility, even if just for a ‘test’ run, to familiarise yourself with its operation. Having said that, please keep in mind that the teachers’ prime focus during the day is on facilitating educational activities for the children, so they may not always be able to respond during the hours the children are attending. Over the past couple of weeks, both Teams 3/4 and 5/6 have enjoyed excursions to complement their studies on this term’s whole school focus, ‘Change’. Our 3/4s have visited the Melbourne Museum while the 5/6s have been to the State Library and the Chi- nese Museum. We thank the teachers for facilitating these opportunities and to the volunteer parents who assisted at each of these activities. Next week our Team 1/2s will be involved in an incursion called Silly Science, again to enhance their studies related to the ‘change’ theme. Hello everyone

With the children not at school on ANZAC Day nor the following day, we held our ANZAC commemoration over the PA system

last Friday. School Captains Chloe and Henry did an excellent job sharing a brief history of what ANZAC stands for and also related

ANZAC values to the way we can live our lives today. The teachers reported that they were very impressed with the reverence all

the children demonstrated throughout the ceremony.

Charlie Banias and Ava Booth, together with a number of extremely helpful Grade 5 children, supported the ANZAC Appeal by

selling ANZAC biscuits at each of the breaks and again after school. This was a successful fundraiser which we estimate added well

over $100 to the monies we raised selling ANZAC badges and wristbands. Thank you for your initiative and organisational efforts

Charlie and Ava, and thank you to their band of helpers who assisted during the day.

After enjoying a long weekend (wasn’t the weather beautiful!), we hope the majority of families were able to meet with their chil-

dren’s teachers at the Parent –Teacher Interviews on Tuesday. The feedback from the teachers and the few parents I have spoken

to is that the day was most successful. The interviews provided an excellent opportunity for the teachers to share observations and

assessments about the children’s progress thus far this year, and for the parents to share information about the children or seek clari-

fication about the programs and expectations from the school’s perspective.

We are growing continually optimistic about the communication channels opening up for us through Sentral. While we are aware

there were a few anomalies encountered when booking for Parent Teacher Interviews, on the whole the process worked well. At the

interviews, parents should have received information regarding the use of the Sentral Parent Portal ‘Messaging’ feature. We hope

this medium will replace notes or diary entries as the prime form of communication between home and school and vice-versa. Please

have a go at employing this facility, even if just for a ‘test’ run, to familiarise yourself with its operation. Having said that, please

keep in mind that the teachers’ prime focus during the day is on facilitating educational activities for the children, so they may not

always be able to respond during the hours the children are attending.

Over the past couple of weeks, both Teams 3/4 and 5/6 have enjoyed excursions to complement their studies on this term’s whole

school focus, ‘Change’. Our 3/4s have visited the Melbourne Museum while the 5/6s have been to the State Library and the Chi-

nese Museum. We thank the teachers for facilitating these opportunities and to the volunteer parents who assisted at each of these

activities. Next week our Team 1/2s will be involved in an incursion called Silly Science, again to enhance their studies related to the

‘change’ theme.

Sunday

Yesterday the school’s Orchestra participated at the Boroondara Eisteddfod. Mr Symons has written about this in his column today

so I won’t expand further here, except to say that we know they performed well after rehearsing weekly with Miss Stephen.

Quite a few prospective families have visited the school this term, with many more booked in to join our Wednesday morning tours

over the next few weeks. These visitors are looking for a good school into which they can enrol their 2017 Foundation (Prep) children.

To assist in their deliberations, we will be conducting our school Open Day on Monday 9th May and our 2017 Foundation Infor-

mation Night at 7.00 p.m. on Thursday 12th May. If you are aware of families who will have Foundation children starting school next

year, please let them know about these upcoming events, and encourage them to book for a tour on Open Day or on one of our regular

Wednesday morning (9.30 a.m.) sessions.

All is in readiness for our Working Bee this Sunday to be held from 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m., followed by a sausage sizzle and re-

freshments. The replies received indicate we are expecting a reasonable turn out of willing volunteers to assist, but we could always do

with more. Amongst a long list of other jobs, we will be clearing out the service area to make room for our chicken coop, installing

some seating and re-painting our emergency evacuation numbers. Of course there are autumn leaves everywhere that need to be

cleared away and many other gardening and cleaning tasks. Leaf blowers would be a valuable inclusion if you’re looking to bring

some equipment along. We look forward to working alongside you on Sunday morning.

Our Buildings and Grounds Committee met last night to discuss many issues pertaining to the school’s physical environment and to

organise the aforesaid Working Bee. Over the last couple of years we have lost several of our long-term committee members as their

children have move on to secondary school, so our numbers have dwindled. If you are interested in joining this very practical group

which meets once per term (usually on a Tuesday at 7.00 p.m. for about an hour), please contact the office. We’d love to hear from

you!

At our assembly this coming Monday we will be presenting Chess trophies for Term 1 to some of those children in our Intermediate

and Advanced groups. Amongst many of our regular features, we will also be promoting the French Poetry Competition open to our

Grade 3 children and our Free Dress Day (‘what I want to be when I grow up’) next Thursday in support of our Ethiopian Sponsor

Child, Yem.

Due to the hectic nature of recording the names of our place-getters in the Fun Run / Cross Country events and the pressing need to

meet the newsletter deadline, several of our runners had their names spelled incorrectly in last week’s Press. Sincere apologies are

extended to Leonor Tinoco, Ryan Huynh, Srishti Sharma, Isabella Ciavarella, Kaj Harper-Lietoff, Kamil Hegazi and Kenichi

Chang.

Condolences to the Smith family (Stephanie in 6SR & Nicholas in3KJ) on the death of their maternal grandfather, to the Chin family

(Zaria in 1ML) on the death of their maternal grandfather and to the Harrison family (Milla in 1/2C) on the death of their paternal

grandfather

SCIENCE IMMERSION IN 1ML

This week I visited Monica Lindau and 1ML for their Science immersion session. In last week’s Assistant Principal Report

Jane Woodman spoke of the inquiry model which operates at BPPS. Our school focuses on various concepts across the year

levels. This term is ‘change’ and for the 1/2 team it means a focus on Science.

The lesson began in the classroom with a student sharing a book from home on the five senses. This provided an opportunity

to revisit this aspect of the unit. From there the class viewed a YouTube music video about the senses. They sang a very

catchy song, again about the five senses.

Monica dressed up as ‘Professor Lindau’ taking on the personality of a scientist. Professor Lindau focused the students on the

sense of sight. The students put on their special glasses, directing their focus even more. Professor Lindau prepared the stu-

dents for observation and shared the see, think and wonder model to prepare them for their observations. This was introduced

through a picture stimulus. The expectations were clear. In this case they were 3: be quick, quiet but not messy. The class was

asked what they knew about twisters? They had to watch ‘super carefully’ as the experiment took place. It’s a shame you

weren’t all there as it was great!

The class moved to the gallery where a number of tables had been set up. The students used their sense sight to investigate

various objects linked to the inquiry unit. The students rotated through the tables. This session was the last in a two week im-

mersion process. As Monica said, students need to see Science as than more experiments. Students choose what they were

most interested in and wrote about it before they went to lunch.

Although the focus was on the sense and investigations, Monica implemented various resources and approaches – whole

class, individual and small group to immerse the students in the focus of the Science unit.

This week the students began the next stage of their inquiry. I look forward to seeing many scientists in our Grade 1/2 area as

the term progresses; in fact I came across a group of botanists yesterday who looked very similar to the students of 1ML!

MUSIC AT BPPS

When I first visited BPPS one of the areas I was most impressed by was the Performing Arts program. At Boroondara Park

we have the expertise of two staff - Llaaneath Poor and Beth Stephen. Apart from weekly performance arts sessions which

include exploring dance, drama and music, students have the opportunity to be part of Junior School Choir (Grades 1-3),

Senior School Choir (Grades 4-6), the Girls’ Vocal Group (Grades 5-6), the Boys’ Vocal Group (Grades 5-6) and the Re-

corder Ensemble (for students in Grades 4-6). We also provide a comprehensive number of instrumental music through mu-

sic tutors who work alongside our staff.

Yesterday I was fortunate to attend the Boroondara Eisteddfod with our school’s 15-piece orchestra. This group has been

working with Beth this year. These students come from Grades 3-6 with their experience ranging from 12 months to over 5

years. Having the opportunity to perform in front of the audience, competition or not, is what most performers look forward

to the most. Having a background in music added to my enjoyment and honour to watch the students as they tuned up, ran

through each piece, walked into the performance hall and ultimately performed. They were in tune and in time. What more

could you ask for?

Providing a well rounded curriculum is essential in developing the whole child and the Arts at Boroondara Park is certainly

doing their part in this development.

ARTIS OF THE WEEK A magnificent Autumn tree features in the work by our next Artist of the Week, Adrina Hosseinpour of FSA. Adrina has filled the length and breath of her page with a drawing of a large spreading tree. She used rubbing crayons to create the bark of the tree and food dye was washed over the entire work. The following week, Adrina created Au-tumn leaves from torn tissue paper and these were collaged on to complete the work. Well done Adrina! Chris Trollope & Jennifer Hortin

Thank you to those who have put themselves forward to help. There are many days still left to fill; please complete the Canteen

Helpers form if you can help. If you feel you cannot commit to the canteen the whole day remember anytime you can help is

appreciated If you are unable to work on your selected days, could you please let me know on 0419 506 318.

Save the Date! 2016 BPPS Fair Saturday 19th November 2016

This year’s BPPS Fair will be held in November, offering a fun community day full of stalls (for some early Christmas shopping)

rides, food, free activities and more.

Further information will follow as we will need plenty of volunteers to help with all aspects of planning and preparation leading up

to and at the event. Thank you to those who have volunteered already.

Any ideas or enquiries contact Bek and Jacquie and [email protected]
