TRAINING SCHOOLS

Jointly with Mistra Urban Futures (MUF) based in Gothenburg, Sweden we look into establishing a toolkit on transdisciplinary research and co-production.

We tested the first draft of the toolkit in the first INTREPID training school.

Recognizing that many of the identified competences and skills in the framework are not being taught in the urban programs we are involved with the second phase focuses on the future role of academia and re-imagine urban curricula across Europe.

Second phase

The future of universities “Re-imagining the urban curriculum”

Objectives• to part-recover, part-expand, the overall mission of Universities as a public good that delivers

education (knowledge and capabilities), wellbeing (of those inside and outside its ‘walls’, notably the city: a porous university), and social equality.

• to rethink the practice of transdisciplinarity as a suitable learning experience for students. • to brainstorm on which capabilities, skills and dispositions we would need to teach in an urban

curriculum, so as to equip students with the ability to tackle future challenges linked to sustainability and (in)equality (in relationship to ID/TD but not only);

• to expand the remit of curricula to embrace a broader notion of ‘knowledge’ that includes new ways of thinking, acting and being which can serve some of the following issues: critical thinking, the ethical dimension of applied research (the ‘should’) and the need to co-create values – showing the ‘value of values’, the relevance of active rather than inert knowledge, the need to rediscover the value of ‘generalists’ and their capacity for bridging and synthesis.

• to identify a series of cases (urban-type courses) and possibly course leaders 'open' to rethink an urban curriculum for the future or simply interested in the topic.

Page 20: WORKSHOP „RE-IMAGINE URBAN CURRICULA ( a needs assessment) Ljubjana 5-7th of December 2018 - Intrepidintrepid-cost.ics.ulisboa.pt/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/WG3_Ljubjana... · argument

The future of universities “Re-imagining the urban curriculum”

In order to obtain these objectives, following suggestions are made• To first conduct a survey on transdisciplinarity in curricula within the spatial disciplines

(architecture, urban planning, architecture and geography). This would deliver the basic argument for the need of a revised curricula and first ideas on how to proceed.

• Second, to develop a ‘manifesto’ that all involve partners sign up to and which will be the framework for testing innovative new ways of dealing with rebalancing our focus between teaching knowledge and building capabilities, skills and dispositions.

• Third, to apply for further funding in order to develop a round of ‘workshops’ with students for transdisciplinary approaches in diverse localities with a rotating host as part of a larger initiative on re-imagine urban curricula. -> Erasmus Application on Capasity Building in HE
