LAKE NYASA BASIN MAP

INTRODUCTION

Lake Nyasa Basin is located in the South

Western part of Tanzania; is shared by Malawi

and Mozambique. The basin drains into the

Indian Ocean via Shire River system in

Mozambique. Thus, the Lake Nyasa Basin

forms part of the Zambezi River Basin. The

Lake Nyasa Basin extends over parts of Mbeya,

Iringa and Ruvuma regions – and partly of

wholly falls in 11 districts.

Area covered

• The total area of Lake Nyasa Basin is 165,109 Km2 inclusive of lake waters 33,457 Km2), land area (131,652 Km2).33,457 Km ), land area (131,652 Km ).

• Population and its growth rate

Lake Nyasa Basin is estimated to have a population of around 2.2 million people according to the 2002 census. With the growth rate of 2.8 to 3.5 per annum

Major rivers

The major rivers that drain into Lake

Nyasa are Ruhuhu (13,490Km2), Songwe (3550 Km2), Kiwira (1660 Km2), Rufirio (3550 Km2), Kiwira (1660 Km2), Rufirio (1350 Km2), and Lumbira (1414 Km2)

STATUS &FORMATION OF WUAs

A total number of about 76 District Facilitation Teams (DFTs) were trained in all district within Lake Nyasa Basin to facilitate the process of Water User facilitate the process of Water User Associations formation.

Baseline survey conducted

Three baseline survey have been conducted in

Mbinga, Songea and Mbozi districts in Luwaita,

Examples of informal institution found in Lake Nyasa Basin are fishermen, farmer, local miners, women groups etc. Some of their contributions are;

• Information delivery specifically on local expertise, identification of local resources etc

• Their existence as members will provide a valuable contribution in the management of Natural Resources

• Management of water resources at the primary level.

Relationship between WUG and other natural

resources organization

• Consultation and facilitation. Most of them

communicate with formal natural resources

organizations for consultation and facilitation on

technical issues through trainings, seminars,

workshops, write up etcworkshops, write up etc

• Other natural resource organization provides an

opportunity for network extension to various

stakeholders at various levels'
