Vicens / CORBIS he United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) works with countries around the world to identify and protect cultural and natural places that merit recognition as part of the common heritage of humankind. UNESCO adopted the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1972. Since then, 180 countries have ratified the treaty, and at present 812 properties are inscribed on the list — 628 of which are cultural, 160 natural and 24 mixed (a combination of the two). They are noted here in alphabetical order by country and in the order they were listed. he United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)works with countries around the world to identify and protect cultural andnatural places that merit recognition as part of the common heritage ofhumankind. UNESCO adopted the Convention concerning the Protection of the

World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1972.
