We have long wanted to host our Africa Gala Ceremony in Kenya, regarded as one of the most beautiful places in Africa and widely preferred as the ultimate “Out of Africa” destination.

During 2013, we are celebrating 20 years of World Travel Awards. At the start in 1993 this was a concept created to celebrate the leading brands of travel, tourism and hospitality at just one prestigious event each year. Now, as the premier global travel award programme, we are hosting eight events in 2013, and it has been an incredible journey.

Our locations, categories, nominees and most importantly our database of voting travel professionals have increased exponentially each year showing how the travel, tourism and hospitality industry and the travelling public have come to regard and trust World Travel Awards as the ultimate accolade and benchmark. Other organisations have tried to copy World Travel Awards, but none has the experience, the gravitas, the organisation, or the loyal following of nearly a quarter of a million travel, tourism and hospitality professionals worldwide who vote to

choose those companies and organisations they feel deserve recognition for excellence of service and product. A World Travel Award is the result of hard work and innovation, dedication and passion.

I would like to extend our sincere thanks to our hosts this evening, Safari Park Hotel & Casino. This truly outstanding resort offers the very best in accommodation, world class cuisine, thrilling entertainment, leisure facilities and beautiful gardens in the heart of the city.

We have to make mention of the tragic events which occurred in this city 21st September, but, sadly, nowhere seems to immune to such horrific episodes. However postponing or cancelling our Gala Ceremony would not have helped the Government or people of Kenya, for whom tourism forms a vital part of the country’s economy.

African tourism has grown from virtually nothing over the past three decades to dominate the hospitality landscape.

Here Breaking Travel News brings you the headlines from the some of the key players on the continent as they

prepare to battle it out at the World Travel Awards.

Considered one of the leading airlines in the world, South African Airways has implemented a codeshare agreement with TAM Airlines, one of the largest carriers in South America. SAA will place its designator code “SA” on flights operated by TAM from Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Curitiba, Brasília, Salvador, Florianopolis, Iguaçu Falls, Recife, and Belo Horizonte, connecting ever more passengers to South America.

Likewise, TAM will place its designator code “JJ” on flights operated by SAA between Sao Paulo and Johannesburg, and to other cities within South Africa,

namely, Cape Town, Durban, East London and Port Elizabeth. SAA currently has eleven flights per week between Johannesburg and Sao Paulo and has an extensive schedule from Johannesburg to these coastal South African cities.

“Alliances and partnerships of this nature forms a crucial part of modern airline management, which is about providing convenient connection for customers to as many destinations as possible without necessarily using your own resources. Moreover, this code share provides a platform to tap into the potential that lies in both carriers’ respective markets in a

manner that would significantly enhance benefits for passengers of both airlines,” said Manoj Papa, SAA acting general manager, commercial.

The collaboration by the two airlines will not only offer leisure travellers a bouquet of holiday options, but also access to multiple business centres.

“This code share operation is vital in that customers travelling to and from various parts of Africa, South America and countries in the east are able to use SAA’s Johannesburg hub as a convenient connection point to various parts of the world,” elaborated Papa.

Record Breaking Tunisia In the north of Africa, Tunisia enjoyed a bumper summer season, welcoming 287,541 Brits between January-August 2013, a boost of 29.4 per cent on the same period last year and up 22.5 per cent on 2010’s record breaking tourism figures. The numbers come as a boost as the destination continues to battle back from the Arab Spring. In August, 55,329 Brits spent their summer holiday in Tunisia, an increase of 26.5 per cent on 2012’s figures and topping the record-breaking 2010 visitor figures by 22 per cent.

“Tunisia has long been a popular destination with UK holidaymakers and these record-breaking figures are testament to our diverse and strong tourism offering. With over 3,000 years of culture, stunning natural landscapes, over 45 lavish thalassotherapy centres, and a range of boutique Dars and family-friendly seaside resorts, we are confident that 2013 will be our best year to date,” explained Wahida Jaiet, UK & Ireland director, Tunisian National Tourist Office.

Europcar Europcar has signed a partnership deal with American car rental giant Advantage. This deal will strengthen Europcar’s strategic development in a fast moving environment and will fully complement its responsive and innovative mobility solutions for its evolving customers’ expectations. FSNA, a public company trading on the Toronto Venture Exchange, operates Advantage Rent A Car from major airport locations in the United States.

This new partnership will allow Advantage customers to have a global network open to them providing them with a worldwide car rental service. Europcar customers will be served by Advantage in the USA and Advantage customers will be served by Europcar in the rest of the world, as of August 19th 2013.

With World Travel Awards in town there is plenty to celebrate in Kenyan tourism sector. Here we bring readers up to

date with exactly what has been happening in this rapidly growing tourism hotspot.

First off the United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organisation has announced the Mount Kenya-Lewa Wildlife conservancy will be added as an extension to Mount Kenya Natural Park which was designated a World Heritage site in 1997. Lewa and Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve were inscribed as an extension to the Mount Kenya World Heritage site in June following Kenya’s proposal to expand the boundary to include the cultural and traditional values of Mount Kenya.

This expansion will enhance the protection of the property as a world heritage site and improve the conservation status of the mountain.

In aviation, British Airways has launched an additional flight between Nairobi and London, which began May 12th. The new flight departs London at 20:00 on Sunday evenings and land at 04:55 the following morning. The return service will leave Nairobi at 22:45 on Monday evenings and arrive in London at 08:25 the next morning. The extra flight will increase capacity on the route by 266 seats a week.

Kenya is a growing economy and the additional flight has been scheduled as an overnight service so that customers, particularly those travelling on business, can make the most of their time in Kenya. By the end of this month the

airline currently serves 18 routes in 15 African countries.

From June 2nd Kenya Airways has also met tourist’s demands by increasing the frequency of flights to the city of Eldoret from 11 to 14 weekly flights. On Mondays, Tuesdays and Sundays the additional flights will depart from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi, playing an important role in opening up the North Rift region to tourism. Eldoret is located in the Rift Valley region which offers stunning views and a collection of tourist attraction sites and resorts. The route is served by Embraer E170 aircrafts with the flight lasting approximately an hour.

Mombasa Air Safari, the longest serving airline operating on the Mombasa-Amboseli-Mara route, has also now announced the launch of its Nairobi Wilson-Mara schedule service. The airline will operate two daily departures from Nairobi Wilson Airport, the morning service departing at 10:00 and the afternoon service at 15:00.

Technology NewsThe Kenya Tourism Board has introduced a ‘Magical Kenya’ Android app allowing tourists to discover the beauty and excitement of Kenya at the touch of a button. The app invites users to explore Kenya’s tourism products through a detailed travel guide helping to prepare visitors for their trip and providing general information and tips on the destination.

The Magical Kenya Android app provides recommendations on where to go, what to see and enables users to connect with local business, hotels and restaurants and also offers them the opportunity to create a fun souvenir video which can be shared with friends on Facebook.

New Hotels in KenyaKenya’s portfolio of luxury hotels has continued to increase with more five-star brands opening properties in the country this year. The latest addition to the Hemingways Collection officially opened in April 2013. A member of the Small Luxury Hotels, Hemingways

Nairobi is a new luxury boutique hotel situated in the peaceful suburb of Karen. The hotel is a graceful plantation-style building with 45 enchanting suites, each overlooking the Ngong Hills. Hemingways Nairobi is the only hotel in Kenya that offers personalised butler service setting a new benchmark to the hotel industry. The hotel’s main public building opens onto large, airy terraces on both the ground and first floors with stunning views towards the Ngong Hills. The orientation of the buildings is set overlooking the rolling lawns with the Ngong Hills in the distance. The hotel also features a wellness centre, swimming pool, gym and spa.

Located on the border of the Olare Motorogi Conservancy in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Mara Toto, has revisited the past by taking a ‘back to classics’ design approach inspired by Africa’s original explorers. The magical and romantic era can be embraced within five spacious canvas tents all fitted with en-suite bathrooms where enjoying a piping hot shower can be accompanied by a chorus of hippos lounging close by. The camp is hidden within a cluster of ebony trees on the banks of the Ntiakitak River protected where their local wildlife wanders the riverbanks. Mara Toto is an exciting adventure camp that also offers a stylish experience. Activities at the camp include early morning hot air ballooning across the Maasai Mara Reserve and visiting local schools and community projects.

The newest addition to Kenya’s vast safari camp offering was eagerly anticipated with Sir Richard Branson’s Mahali Mzuri opening its doors in June 2013. ‘Mahali Mzuri’, which means ‘beautiful place’ in Swahili, is a luxury tented safari camp in the Maasai Mara ecosystem in western Kenya. Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice reportedly visited the luxury resort in November 2012 ahead of its opening this year. The Virgin Limited Edition collection property offers a unique African safari experience featuring 12 luxury tented suites with spacious bedroom and deck with stunning views.

Finally, the Emaar Hospitality Group is set to open a new property near to the Maasai Mara at the end of 2013. The Enkeri Mara by the Address Maasai Mara will have easy access from Olurruk Mara Airstrip and guests can enjoy stunning views over the reserve from luxury safari tents. The resort will feature an array of restaurants and a wellness spa that uses traditional Mara herbs and concoctions. Emaar Hospitality Group properties include the fashionable Address Residence in Dubai.

World Travel Awards, “the Oscars of the travel industry”, has launched a new programme to acknowledge

the finest brands in the global ski industry. The inaugural World Ski Awards will take place at A-ROSA

Kitzbühel, Austria on 15-17 November 2013.

World Ski Awards will be the first of its kind to celebrate the pinnacle of the wintersports hospitality industry. The exclusive awards programme will feature categories: best ski resort, hotel, chalet and boutique hotel.

The elite organisations from the world’s top 20 ski nations have been nominated in their respective categories, and have entered a public and industry vote.

Countries in the programme are: Andorra, Argentina, Austria, Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland and USA.

At the ceremony, the national winners with the most votes will be announced as the victors in their respective world category.

Kitzbühel in Austria’s Tyrol will provide the perfect setting for the inaugural red-carpet ceremony. Home to the legendary Hahnenkamm Race, the historic medieval town is synonymous with ski tourism and is one of the world’s most popular wintersports destinations.

The landmark ceremony will be staged at the world-class A-ROSA Kitzbühel, which enjoys a spectacular location overlooking the Hahnenkamm peak.

Sion Rapson, Director, World Ski Awards, highlights the role that the programme will play: “World Ski Awards will serve as the definitive awards programme to reward and celebrate the elite of the wintersports industry. The gala ceremony in Kitzbühel will bring together the leading players and provide a unique forum for exchanging ideas and top-level networking.”

World Ski Awards has revealed A-ROSA Kitzbühel will play host to its first Gala Ceremony on 15-17

November 2013, as the World Travel Awards spin-off recognises industry leaders from across the ski and

mountain tourism sector.

The award-winning 115-room, 35-suite property, which was the first A-ROSA resort to open in Austria, is a stylish meeting place in the Alps for discerning visitors from all around the world.
