ST. MATTHEW CHURCH GAHANNA, OHIO

DEAR ST. MATTHEW PARISHIONERS, I share with bittersweet emotion that my last professional day at St. Matthew is October 4 and after that I will begin work as the Event Coordinator for the Office of Development and Planning with the Diocese of Columbus. In my six years of ministry work here at St. Matthew, I have learned more about the love of Jesus Christ than I could ever imagine. I will miss greatly my daily interactions with staff and parishioners and look forward to worshipping with you on the weekends. Please keep me and all of our staff in your prayers during this time of transition. Thank you for your collaboration, dedication, and the countless ways you have supported my work here. In Christ, Jenna Zins, Staff & Mission Manager

IN-HOME EMHC NEEDED – We are in need of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to minister to the homebound on Sundays. Recently, two assisted living facilities have opened in our parish area, which has put a strain on our existing In-Home EMHC, requiring the need for additional EMHC. If interested or you want to learn more, contact Max Maksimoski at [email protected].

WORSHIP + SERVE + EVANGELIZE: 60 YEARS OF SPREADING THE GOSPEL PROGRAM – Thank you to all parishioners who have completed and submitted your Commitment Card to the church. For those parishioners who have not yet had the opportunity to submit their card, a letter will be mailed to you with a personalized Commitment Card. It is important that all parishioners complete a Commitment Card as we will be mailing out a Summary Report of the program and need all commitments accounted for in this report. If you have any questions, please contact the Church Office. We also encourage all parishioners to consider our electronic giving method and to set up your reoccurring offertory gifts electronically. To set up Online Giving, simply go to www.stmatthew.net/giving.

PILGRIMAGE WITH FR. PETER – Join Fr. Peter Asantebwana (June 12-23, 2020) for a once in a lifetime opportunity! Fr. Peter will host a group of pilgrims on an experience of holiness and healing to Fatima and Lourdes, continuing on to the Passion Play in Oberammergau. This play has been presented every 10 years since 1634 by the village of Oberammergau as a way of thanking God for sparing the village from the plague. Every stop on this tour is life-changing and breathtaking. For details, plan to attend an informational meeting on Sunday, October 13 in the St. Anthony Room at 11:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. or contact Jerusalem Tours at 614-501-6714 or [email protected].

NURSERY HELP NEEDED - The Parish Nursery is in need of adult and student volunteers to staff the Nursery during each weekend Mass. Volunteers are typically scheduled once a month and we can work around your schedule. We are currently looking for adults for the 12:00 Mass, and both 5:00 Masses. Please contact Maria Ohalek at [email protected] if you are interested in joining this ministry.

GRIEFSHARE – NO CLASS THIS THURSDAY – If you have recently lost a loved one or a close friend, please join us for the next GriefShare session. We will accompany you on your grief journey and offer you loving support and comfort. The session began Thursday, September 12 and runs through Thursday, December 12 (no classes on September 26, October 31 and November 28). Sessions will be held from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Saint Raphael Room. A workbook is available for use throughout the session for a one-time fee of $30.00. Please contact Mary Lager at 614-395–9099 or [email protected] for more details or if you have questions. We look forward to helping ease the pain and sorrow accompanied with your loss.

PARISH PROJECTSAs good stewards of your generosity, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide regular updates on St. Matthew campus projects, improvements, ongoing initiatives, and enhancements. The past week has been focused on putting our best foot forward as we celebrate 60 years as a parish and how we can make the campus safer and more secure moving forward through grants and your investments. This month, we will be submitting several grant applications to The Catholic Foundation related to short and long-term safety and security initiatives. We have started by establishing wireless communications between the parish and school offices and the Facilities Team. The next step is to integrate the security systems to enable either office to lock down the entire campus if there was a threat. The next step in our safety and security plan is to systematically replace aging external doors and to add electronic access. We can significantly improve building security, control, and track entry as well as lock down all doors from any access in the case of an emergency.Last year, we applied for replacement windows in the original 1963 school building. These would be exceedingly more efficient and include additional outside regress points; we were turned down. This year, our focus is on only adding large regress windows to the seven classrooms in the upper north hall of the school. We can then phase in replacement windows over the next few years; safety first, followed by energy efficiency.Other notable updates around the campus include the school LED conversion project which should be completed this coming week; you may have noticed the change in the Parish Activity Center during our 60th Anniversary celebration. Additional enhancements to our Sanctuary sound system continue to be made. The Apse area continues to darken for more depth and the first two upper murals are within a couple weeks of completion and installation. The marble angels are one step closer to the Sanctuary as we assess what adjustments must be made to the Altar prior to final placement. The angels are in the Gathering Space TEMPORARILY.We appreciate this opportunity to provide these updates and welcome suggestions for facility enhancements. Please contact George Harvey at [email protected].

BACKUP CHILDCARE PERSON NEEDED FOR WALKING WITH PURPOSE – The Walking with Purpose (WWP) Thursday evening program is looking for a backup childcare person, 18 years or older, who has met the Protecting God’s Children requirements. Childcare is a very important part of the WWP program, as it allows mothers who want to participate more flexibility. You will serve as a backup in the event the regular two childcare people aren’t available. It is a paid position, $10.00 per hour, on Wednesday mornings from 9:15-11:00 a.m. or Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 p.m. If you are able to serve as a backup, please let us know if you are potentially available for morning, evening, or either. If you are interested, please contact Paula Sewell at [email protected] or 740-350-1943. Also, although both the Wednesday morning and Thursday evening sessions have begun, women are welcome to join our programs at any time! Information about all of our studies is on our website, stmatthew.net/wwp. If you have questions about either of our programs, please contact Gina Sergio at [email protected] or 614-806-4356.

Romans:The Gospel of

Paul’s letter to the Romans has been at the center of reflection, conversion, and controversy from the very beginning. Romans: The Gospel of Salvation provides an authentically Catholic, comprehensive, and simple way to understand the overarching theme of Romans – salvation.Romans: The Gospel of Salvation explores the ways in which Jesus is the fulfillment of Israel’s prophecies, which leads to the universal, “Catholic” family of God.

COMPUTER CYBER SECURITY FOR EVERYDAY PEOPLE Come learn how to protect yourself in the Cyber World. Fellow parishioner, Allen Perk, of XLN SYSTEMS, will explain, in non-computer terms, how to recognize Phishing Scams from emails and the phone. Other subjects to be discussed include "passphrases" (instead of passwords), freezing your credit, the Internet of Things IoT, using wireless networks and banking online more safely. This free educational event will be held in the St. Anthony Room on Wednesday, October 2 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Please RSVP to [email protected].

WANT TO SOCIALIZE WITH OTHER SINGLES? Several parishioners are starting a group for single people (widowed, divorced, separated, or single) who are 55 years or older, and would like to get together to enjoy dinner, a movie, and other local activities. The group is planning an initial dinner on Saturday, October 5 at 5:30 p.m. at O’Charley's. Interested? Please contact Carol Lombardi at [email protected] or 614-478-4328 or Jeff Solinger at [email protected] or 614-506-2382.

COOKIES NEEDED FOR KAIROS PRISON MINISTRY – Kairos baked cookies are needed for the upcoming prison ministry weekend. These cookies will represent at least three truths of the Christian life: God’s unending grace. They are a physical symbol of God’s grace, available to all believers (i.e. agape love); The power of Christian community. All Kairos cookies are home-baked, demonstrating that real people on the outside can see the inmates through the eyes of agape love and have prayed for the inmates while baking the cookies; Availability of forgiveness. You can imagine that God’s forgiveness and self-forgiveness are difficult to accept in a prison. ANY amount of baked cookies that you can offer would be appreciated. For questions or the guidelines for baking cookies, please contact Donato D’Alberto at 614-774-5123. Please drop off cookies at St. Matthew in the St. Anthony Room kitchen (look for the plastic bin) before Friday, September 27. Thank you for your generosity!

WE WELCOME INTO OUR FAMILY OF FAITH the following children who were baptized on Sunday, September 1 and Sunday, September 15: Owen James Swartz and Grayson Bradley Balasco.

HOW TO GET THROUGH THE BIBLE…IN AN HOUR!

• Do you have a desire to know how all of the books of the Bible are connected?

• Are you new to reading the Scriptures?• Have you been reading the Scriptures and don’t see the

‘big picture’?Then join us for a free one-hour presentation that will get you started on a lifelong journey of reading the Scriptures with clearer vision. The Bible is such a big book, it's easy to get lost in the forest because of all the trees. You need a map that helps keep you on the main path from Genesis to Revelation. In this audio and slide show presentation, Dr. John Bergsma shares with us the "mental map" of the Bible he wishes he had when he started reading the Scriptures at age twelve. Whether you've read through the Bible many times, or have never picked up the Good Book, you'll enjoy Dr. Bergsma's presentation, as he uses easy-to-draw stick figures to sketch out the main Bible storyline. The message of the Bible has rarely been so easy to see! Best of all, you can use Dr. Bergsma's method to share the Bible message with others. This presentation by Dr. Bergsma is based on his book Bible Basics for Catholics: A New Picture of Salvation History.Join us for this FREE presentation on• Sunday, October 13 after the 8:00 a.m. Mass

(9:00-10:00 a.m.)• Meet in the St. Raphael Room• Refreshments will be provided• Families are welcome!
