ST. MATTHEW CHURCH GAHANNA, OHIO
LETTER FROM FR. SILLDear St. Matthew Family,We are another week closer to being able to resume public Masses, and I know that many of you are excited to return to Mass and receive the Eucharist. I again want to use this space to help you understand what to expect when you come to Mass. Before we get to the details, however, I have some good news. The Bishop has announced that churches may open for private prayer starting Monday, May 18 and that daily Masses can resume Monday, May 25 (for now, 8:30 a.m. only). We will resume Sunday Masses and our regular weekend Confession schedule of 4:00 p.m. Saturday and 11:00 a.m. Sunday starting the weekend of May 30/31. Confessions will be held in the confessional, but will only be behind the screen. We ask that you stand or kneel while making your confession, that you wear a mask, and that you use hand sanitizer before and after handling the confessional door.My staff and I continue to pray for you, and we are always grateful for your prayers and support.Sincerely in Christ,Fr. Ted
DISPENSATION FROM MASS UNTIL SEPTEMBER 13, 2020 – Bishop Brennan has dispensed the faithful of the Diocese of Columbus from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass until September 13, 2020. We understand that many who have mild illnesses may feel well enough to come to Mass, but please, out of charity for the vulnerable in our parish family, do not come if you have any symptoms at all, including a cough, fever, or fatigue. Similarly, if you belong to a high risk group because of age or health conditions, you should not come to Mass. Finally, if you do not yet feel safe in large public areas, please do not come. We are making our Mass environment as safe as possible, but we cannot guarantee complete safety.CHURCH OPEN FOR PRIVATE PRAYER STARTING MONDAY, MAY 18 – Beginning Monday, May 18, the church building will be open Monday-Friday for private prayer. From May 18-22, the church will be open from 9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Beginning Monday, May 25, it will be open from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. If you come to pray, please bring a mask and hand sanitizer with you and maintain social distance from anyone outside your immediate family. Please do not come if you are experiencing any symptoms of illness.SUNDAY MASS SIGNS-UPS – Each Sunday morning the church will open 30 minutes before mass begins. In order for us to get an idea of how many people desire to attend Mass, we ask families to let us know which Sunday Mass they plan to attend in advance. This will allow our parishioners to see which Masses have reached the recommended capacity before arriving and assist in better planning for a Mass to attend. Once we reach our maximum number of sign ups per Mass, we will ask parishioners to choose another Mass. We will communicate more about this online process soon.FACE MASKS AND HAND SANITIZER – Please bring a mask and hand sanitizer with you to Mass, whether daily Mass or Sunday Mass. Please wear the mask throughout Mass, removing it only briefly for Communion. Please use hand sanitizer before and after receiving Communion.HYMNALS AND MISSALETTES – All books and papers have been removed from the pews. We encourage everyone to use an app on their phones, like Laudate or iBreviary, to follow along with the Mass. Because singing has the potential to spread droplets farther than speaking does, we are discouraging the congregation from singing.COMMUNION – We will not be offering the Precious Blood during Communion, and we will be distributing Communion from only three stations: the middle aisle and the two side aisles. We will only have one line per aisle, so pews on each side will need to alternate as they enter the Communion line. Communion will be available in the hand or on the tongue. No matter how you receive, please take care not to touch the Communion minister. We thank you for your understanding as we develop these new policies, and we appreciate your continued support.

IN OUR PARISH
PARISH PROJECTSAs good stewards of your generosity, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide you regular updates on St. Matthew campus projects, improvements, and on-going initiatives to getting our Church open for public Masses. In summary, the official school year is winding down for the summer and we are already working on many projects which we will discuss next week. The church has started the reopening process for the celebration of public Masses. Working with many organizations, your Facilities Team has put much effort into the implementation of our new normal. We will open the Sanctuary for prayer starting Monday, May 18 from 9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Only certain pews will be accessible so that we can control and track what will need to be cleaned daily.Starting Monday, May 25, the 8:30 a.m. daily Masses will be open to the public following procedures described below. We plan to resume all Sunday Masses on the weekend of May 30/31. Seating will be limited to facilitate social distancing. Reconciliation will be moved back into the confessionals. At this time, no decision has been made about the 6:30 a.m. Masses. When you visit the Sanctuary or attend Mass, our primary focus will be on three areas – good hand hygiene, wearing a mask or cloth over your mouth and maintaining safe distancing. Safe distancing will be accomplished by limiting participants to 225 for each Mass. We ask that you register for the Mass of your choice on our website or call the Parish Office.Hand hygiene begins at home; please wash your hands before coming to our campus. All entry doors will be propped open and there will be touchless hand sanitizers at each door; please use them upon arrival into the church. Always wear a mask or cloth face cover (except when receiving the Most Holy Sacrament); if you don’t have a mask, one will be provided.Upon arrival into the Sanctuary you will notice every other pew is marked to be left empty for safe distancing. Pews also have markings every six feet as a guide between people or between different family groups.During Communion, rows will alternate into a single communion line in the center of the aisle same as before, only instead of two lines in each aisle, there is only one with six feet between those taking communion. Your mask should remain on until you reach the priest, then unhook one side and allow your mask to hang to the side (do not take it off and hold it or put it in your pocket) so you can take Communion with both hands. Replace your mask and return to your seat.At the end of Mass, we will be releasing alternating rows starting from the back of the church. Please go directly outside to clear the Sanctuary for cleaning between Masses.Note: We will continue to live stream Masses at 8:30 a.m. daily and 10:00 a.m. on Sunday. We appreciate this opportunity to provide updates on what we are doing in preparation of resuming Masses and activities. Please don’t hesitate to text or e-mail suggestions on how we can better serve you in these difficult times. Contact George Harvey at [email protected] or text 330-904-1083. Stay healthy and God Bless.

CONFESSIONS AT ST. MATTHEW – St. Matthew will continue to be offering Confessions on Wednesday afternoons from 1:00-3:00 p.m. We will be following guidelines set by the Diocese regarding safety and social distancing, one of which is that Confessions will be by appointment only and that appointments will last five (5) minutes each. The Diocese is asking penitents simply to confess their sins; any parishioner who needs additional time for counseling is welcome to contact our priests separately. To make an appointment for Confession at St. Matthew, please call 614-471-0212 or email Hillarie Michaels at [email protected]. We want to offer the opportunity to make appointments anonymously, so we will do our best to answer phones on weekdays afternoons, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Anyone who does not require anonymity is welcome to call anytime and leave a message or to email Hillarie. All Confessions will be held outside the south entrance of the church under the portico. Many parishes in our Diocese will be offering Confessions, and anyone is welcome to contact any other parish for additional Confession opportunities. For a full list of parishes offering Confession and to view additional safety guidelines, please see the Diocesan website: https://columbuscatholic.org/confession-information.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY COVID-19 – We know that many parishioners are struggling financially because of the economic impact of COVID-19, so we are happy to share that our parish has received an Emergency Response Grant from The Catholic Foundation to assist our parishioners during the COVID-19 outbreak. This fund is only available to St. Matthew parishioners. Guidelines given by the Catholic Foundation, as well as the discretion of our Pastor, will be used when determining eligibility and amount awarded. All applications are kept in strict confidence and are considered on the basis of need and eligibility. For more information and to apply, please go to our website, stmatthew.net, and click "COVID-19 Financial Assistance."
