  • ST. MATTHEW CHURCH GAHANNA, OHIO

LENT IS A TIME TO RETURN – This Lent, we invite the parish to reflect on these words from the prophet Joel: "Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, and relenting in punishment." Lent is the perfect time for people to return to the Church in preparation to meet the Risen Christ at Easter. We are here to welcome everyone, no matter where they are in the faith journey. Starting on Ash Wednesday, invitations to come home will be available in the Gathering Space. Please take one (or more) and invite family and friends who have been away to join you in celebrating Jesus’ triumph over sin and death. We will also have small handouts available with some suggestions for how to talk to people about returning to the Church. We hope to provide additional information in the future that can help us learn how to have these difficult conversations, and, most importantly, how to listen. For more information, please contact Pat Martin at [email protected].

LENTEN REFLECTION BOOKS AVAILABLE – We hope this Lent will be a spiritually fruitful time for everyone, and we are happy to offer Lenten reflection books as a gift to our parishioners. Books will be available in the Gathering Space starting this weekend and are the perfect size to keep in your pocket, purse, or car. Please take one and use it to build a regular prayer life as we enter into the mystery of Christ's Passion, death, and Resurrection.

EASTER FLOWERS – It has been a tradition in our parish to remember a loved one by making a contribution to our Easter flowers. (Suggested donation is $10.00.) An envelope for Easter Flowers is included in our monthly and quarterly packet of offertory envelopes or you can give electronically through Online Giving. Please clearly print the name of the person(s) you wish to remember and drop the envelope in the collection basket, or submit the names through Online Giving by Sunday, March 29. Thank you.

STEWARDSHIP AT ST. MATTHEW – If you are currently giving through our ECO (electronic contribution option) automatic withdrawals, we encourage you to learn more about our Online Giving system. Over the next few months, we will be phasing out our ECO and asking anyone who wants to give through automatic withdrawal to set up an Online Giving account instead. For more information, see our website: www.stmatthew.net/giving or email us at [email protected]. Thank you for supporting our efforts to worship, serve, and evangelize!

MAGNIFICAT – The time is now to renew or begin a subscription to the Magnificat for June 2020 through May 2021. The Magnificat is a monthly publication that provides daily Mass readings, morning and evening prayers, a daily meditation and stories and lessons about the saints. If you subscribe through the parish, the cost is $26.50. This is a savings of $20.50 from normal cost. To renew or place a new order, please contact Joan Rovnak at [email protected] or 614-475-4785 or 614-205-9396 (cell) by Monday, March 16. Joan is the new contact for ordering and distribution. Peter will host a group of pilgrims on an experience of holiness and healing to Fatima and Lourdes, continuing on to the Passion Play in Oberammergau. Every stop on this tour is life-changing and breath-taking. For details, contact Katy at Jerusalem Tours at 614-501-6714 or email [email protected]. Spaces are filling quickly, so call today!

VISITING MINISTRY – Saint Matthew Parish has numerous care facilities for the elderly within its boundaries. In these care centers as well as in private homes, there are numerous parishioners who could enjoy a visitor every once in a while. When I go to visit or to take Communion, these elderly are so appreciative. Please consider becoming a part of our Visiting Ministry and sharing a half-hour of your time each week or every other week with someone who is lonely. If you are interested, please contact Carol Ann Lombardi at 614-478-4328 or [email protected].

PARISH NURSERY – We are happy to offer a nursery for young children during the 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon Masses on Sundays, but we are unable to offer nursery care during the other weekend Masses due to lack of available volunteers. The safety of our children is our top priority, so we thank you for understanding. If you have any questions about the nursery, please contact Maria Ohalek at [email protected].

USHERS NEEDED! St. Matthew is in need of more ushers for certain Masses. Our priests rely heavily on the ushers to make all parishioners and visitors feel welcome, to administer the collection and also pitch in when extra duties are necessary. It is time for our community to embrace the gifts we’ve been given and we can’t wait to see how God provides for these specific needs. Please contact the Parish or 614-471-0212 for more information or to contribute.

FOLLOW ST. MATTHEW ON SOCIAL MEDIA! Follow our social media accounts for updates on Parish events, worship times, and more! Facebook: @StMatthewGahanna; Twitter: @GahannaStMatts; Instagram: @stmatthewapostle.

PLEASE NOTIFY THE PARISH OFFICE – To fulfill our Spiritual Work of Mercy to pray for the dead, we encourage parishioners to notify the Parish Office of the death of a loved one. Names and death dates are compiled, either as the funerals are held here or as parishioners inform us of a loved one’s death. All the deceased are remembered by name at the annual Mass of Remembrance, held on All Souls’ Day, November 2.

IF A FAMILY MEMBER IS SICK OR SERIOUSLY ILL, consider contacting the Parish Office at 614-471-0212 for one of the priests to administer the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist and the Anointing of the Sick. Due to HIPAA privacy laws, hospitals no longer notify church offices when parishioners are admitted. As well, in the case of serious illness, families are encouraged to contact us early allowing the priest and patient to talk about any spiritual needs they may have including receiving the Sacrament of Penance.

ARE COMING TO ST. MATTHEW!(Free event)

CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players is a multi-part series that illumines a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of western civilization.

    Bishop Fulton J. SheenThe Communicator

Long before the Internet and social media, Fulton Sheen pioneered Catholic evangelization through the media. At a time when most preachers spoke only from pulpits, Sheen used electronic media as a means to reach far beyond the parish walls. His innovative radio and television programs, beamed out to believers and skeptics alike, reached upwards of 30 million people per week. Sheen had a gift for spreading the faith clearly and persuasively, and he paved the path for today's media evangelists.

    Flannery O'ConnorThe Storyteller

Flannery O'Connor's influence on contemporary culture, particularly literature and film, is profound. Her novels and short stories have been described as shocking, convoluted, funny, and violent, and they are filled with unforgettably strange characters. But they are also, from beginning to end, haunted by Christ. O'Connor radically changes our idea of what religious fiction can be. Her startling prose awakens us to sin and, consequently, to the need for salvation.Join Bishop Barron as he traces the lives and contributions of these two pivotal players.

  • FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 1, 2020

THE SUNDAY MASS READINGS EXPLAINED: THE SEASON OF LENT & THE THREE TEMPATIONS OF CHRIST

Every Sunday at Mass, Catholics from around the world hear about 3 or 4 passages from the Bible – the Old Testament, the New Testament, the Psalms, and the Gospels. Over the course of a year, you literally hear hundreds of passages and at the same time, many Catholics feel very lost, asking themselves questions such as:• Where do these passages come from in the Bible?• What do they mean?• How do the New Testament and the Old Testament passages relate to one another?

The solution is Dr. Pitre’s video Bible Study series focused each week on the particular Sunday Mass readings, explaining them in depth, how they connect to one another and how to apply them to your life.Get the most out of the Word of God that you will be hearing this Sunday. Lent is the perfect season to join in. To view a portion of the video for this week, go to https://catholicproductions.com/blogs/mass-readings-explained-year-a.

Here is what you missed from this week’s 1st Sunday in Lent session:Quotes from Dr. Pitre:• With this Sunday we begin our study of the readings for the holy season of Lent. Over the course of the next six Sundays, the

Church is going to stop reading the Gospel in the way we've been doing it up to this point during Ordinary Time, and start choosing the readings according to some different principles… you'll notice that the Old Testament readings are in the order of the history of salvation. So, there is not always going to be a one-to-one correlation between the Old Testament reading and the Gospel during the Lenten season.

    • Every year, the first Sunday of Lent is always on the temptations of Christ in the desert. I want to just highlight a few key questions that are critical for our understanding not just of this Gospel, but why the Church chooses it for the first Sunday of Lent every single year….

    • First, notice the fact that Jesus goes out into the desert to be tempted by the devil. So why is He in the desert being tested by the devil?

    • Number two, notice that He fasts not just for any period, but for 40 days and 40 nights. What's the significance of 40 days and 40 nights? And I know what you're probably thinking here, you’re probably thinking “well that’s Lent” because Lent is a 40-day period. And that's true, but the question is what would it have meant in the first century A.D.? What would a Jew have understood by 40 days and 40 nights? What was the significance of the number 40?

    • The third key question I want to ask is, what is the nature of these particular temptations? In other words, I will put it this way, why these three temptations?

    • What is the significance of this exchange between Jesus and Satan? Let's walk through each one of those together here…

    AROUND THE DIOCESE

PARISH PROJECTSAs good stewards of your generosity, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide you regular updates on St. Matthew campus projects, improvements, ongoing initiatives and enhancements.Even the Facilities Team is amazed by the high utilization and variety of activities supported by our St. Matthew campus. A perfect example is the Hutta cafeteria. The Hutta is a central drop-off and pick-up area, serves lunch to 600 children and staff, is utilized by Latchkey and then supports evening activities. Last week, evening events included Boy Scouts, Right to Read Week Family Fun Night with two giant bounce houses and the Knights of Columbus Fish Fry. Additionally, the church, church undercroft and the Parish Activity Center are utilized seven days a week, including evenings. It is our pleasure to serve so many ministries. On Monday, we are hosting the Diocesan Honor Choir which is comprised of 240 students representing 26 parishes throughout the Diocese. During the day, almost every room in the church will be utilized to host this huge event which rotates through St. Matthew once every five years. You are invited to attend their performance at 6:30 p.m, Monday evening in the Sanctuary. Please note that the Blessed Sacrament will be removed from the Sanctuary Tabernacle and will lay in repose from 9:00 a.m. Monday until 6:30 a.m. Tuesday. The Adoration Chapel will remain open 24/7.A quick update on the School LED conversion project. We now have three months of electric usage to compare year over year after the conversion. Our lighting costs have been reduced by 60% resulting in over 30% lower total electric consumption. We are currently saving over $1,200.00 per month on our total electric bill. In addition to this direct savings, we should not need to change any light bulbs for several years. We appreciate this opportunity to provide these updates and welcome suggestions for facility enhancements. Please contact George Harvey at [email protected].
