ST. MATTHEW SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES for children age 3-kindergarten will begin on Sunday, October 6. Our year will start with a short parent meeting at 9:30 a.m. with our normal class period of 9:45-11:00 a.m. to follow. YOU CAN STILL REGISTER! Do you have a child that does NOT attend St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic School? If your child does NOT attend Catholic school, they should be registered for Faith Formation classes in the St. Matthew Parish School of Religion. This includes our Sunday School classes offered during the 10:00 a.m. Mass for children ages 3-kindergarten and evening classes offered for children in 1st-8th grade. OPPORTUNITIES IN MUSIC MINISTRY

HANDBELL CHOIR – The bell choir season will begin with rehearsals on Tuesday, September 24 in the practice room behind the choir loft. Anyone interested or with questions, please contact Dawn Shininger, Director of Music, at [email protected] or 614-532-0627.

FUNERAL CHOIR – For any parishioners interested in singing and who are retired or with a flexible schedule during the day, the Parish Funeral Choir might be for you! The time commitment involves the day of the funeral only and to attend funerals as often as your personal schedule allows. ADULT CHOIR – The adult choir season will resume on Sunday, October 6 at the 10:00 a.m. Mass and run through Pentecost Sunday on May 31, 2020. Rehearsals will be held during the week on the 1st and 2nd Thursdays of the month, with additional rehearsal time on Sunday mornings from 9:20 a.m. until the start of Mass. The choir sings at every 10:00 a.m. Mass, as well as special liturgies on Christmas and during Holy Week. THANK YOU, DEACON LARRY KOEBEL! Deacon Larry Koebel has been officially retired as a deacon serving our diocese, but has graciously served here at St. Matthew, his home parish, for the last few years. Due to growing challenges with physical and health issues, he will be "retiring" from his diaconal ministry here at the end of August. We are grateful for the many gifts he shared with us in ministry and for his selfless service. We are happy that we will continue seeing Deacon Larry around the parish even if it means he's sitting in the pews with his wife Laura.

IN-HOME EMHC NEEDED – We are in need of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to minister to the homebound on Sundays. Recently, two assisted living facilities have opened in our parish area, which has put a strain on our existing InHome EMHC, requiring the need for additional EMHC. PILGRIMAGE WITH FR. PETER – Join Fr. Peter Asantebwana (June 12-23, 2020) for a once in a lifetime opportunity! Fr. Peter will host a group of pilgrims on an experience of holiness and healing to Fatima and Lourdes, continuing on to the Passion Play in Oberammergau. This play has been presented every 10 years since 1634 by the village of Oberammergau as a way of thanking God for sparing the village from the plague. Every stop on this tour is life-changing and breathtaking. On Thursday, September 19, we will travel to the Maria Stein Shrine of the Holy Relics which includes transportation, two chapel tours, catered lunch and a chance to walk around the beautiful chapel grounds and shop in their fabulous gift shop! Opening Your Heart, our foundational study, is designed for a woman new to WWP, whether or not you have any Bible Study experience; you are welcome as you are to learn how the Scriptures apply to our everyday lives. Touching the Divine is a study of the Gospel of John and designed for women who have already participated in WWP and are ready for a more advanced level study as we learn how to know Christ in a deeper, more intimate way. NURSERY HELP NEEDED – The Parish Nursery is in need of adult and student volunteers to staff the Nursery during each weekend Mass. Volunteers are typically scheduled once a month and we can work around your schedule. We are currently looking for adults for the 8:00 a.m. and both 5:00 p.m. time slots, and student helpers for each Mass time. CLERGY ABUSE CRISIS RESOURCE – Copies of Bishop Robert Barron’s pastoral letter “Letter to a Suffering Church” are available in the Parish Office. Bishop Barron speaks from the heart and urges us to “stand and fight” for the Church.

PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN SAFE ENVIRONMENT SEMINAR The Diocesan Safe Environment Compliance program requires that for an adult to interact with minors at the school/church, he/she must meet three requirements: attend a Protecting God’s Children class; have a background check performed and complete the code of conduct (attached to the volunteer application). The next Protecting God's Children class that St. Matthew will be hosting is Wednesday, September 18 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. in the St. Anthony Room. As a convenience, Fast Fingerprints (a third party) will be on-site from 5:00-6:00 p.m. to do background checks before the class starts. The background checks will stop once the class starts, so if you want to have your background check done that day, please plan to come early. The line can get pretty long. If you have already taken the PGC class and just need to have the fingerprinting done, please feel free to come to just the background check part. LOOKING FOR A LITURGICAL MINISTRY? Mass sacristans are needed for the 5:00 p.m. Saturday and 12:00 p.m. Sunday Masses. Sacristans are scheduled approximately once a month. Our priests rely heavily on the ushers to make all parishioners and visitors feel welcome, to administer the collection and also pitch in when extra duties are necessary. AROUND THE DIOCESE

PROPOSALS TO REDUCE GUN VIOLENCE, INCREASE MENTAL HEALTH PREVENTION, TREATMENT – Ohio Governor Mike DeWine recently announced a series of legislative reforms to address gun violence and outlined further action to increase mental health prevention, identification, and treatment to better protect Ohioans. “Gun violence doesn’t just take the form of mass shootings, people are victims every day in Ohio and across the country,” said Governor DeWine. “I believe that this is both a public safety issue and an individual wellness issue – we must address both sides to help solve the problem. It’s time to do something, and that is exactly what we are going to do.” This series of solid, workable reforms will help get guns out of the hands of people who should not have them under the law while protecting the rights of law-abiding citizens who are entitled to the right to bear arms and will help prevent and treat those struggling with mental illness. PARISH PROJECTSAs good stewards of your generosity, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide regular updates on St. Matthew campus projects, improvements, ongoing initiatives, and enhancements.We would like to thank those who were able to visit the new Parish Cafeteria last weekend. The final construction punch lists have been completed and this project has now been turned over to the parish to utilize and enjoy for many years to come. Your continued support of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal is greatly appreciated to help replace funds borrowed from the Diocese to finish the project. We had planned to complete the kitchen in two phases but were required to do the entire renovation to meet all current health, safety and building requirements. Again, we thank you for your continued support.School is back in session. Your Facilities Team continues to address the expected start-up issues after the summer break. As those issues are addressed, we are committing additional time and effort to the Church in preparation of our 60th Anniversary as a parish. We will be celebrating with a special Mass with Bishop Brennan and a parish picnic.Additional lighting has been added to the Apse area behind the altar to better highlight the angel murals and wall enhancements. Work continues on the latticework murals. We are hoping to install the lower latticework panels in September.We appreciate this opportunity to provide these updates and welcome suggestions for facility enhancements. JOIN CUB SCOUTS - PACK 317 – ST. MATTHEW PARISH – Cub Scout Pack 317 will host a "Sign-Up" Night to join the Pack sponsored by St. Matthew Parish. Sign-up Night is Wednesday, September 4 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hutta Gym at St. Matthew School. The cost to join the Pack for the school year is $60.00. We accept either cash or check. Boys in Kindergarden through Fifth Grade are eligible for membership. Families and future Cub Scouts are welcome at the Sign-Up Night. Our Pack hosts a traditional Cub Scouting program with family camping, pinewood derby, and pack meetings with skits and activities. Our dens are where the Scouts complete their rank advancements. Join us and start the "Trail to Eagle." The Cubmaster is Trey Porter.
