IN OUR PARISH

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28All School Mass – 8:30 a.m.MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 2NO SCHOOL – Labor DayTUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3NO SCHOOL – Staff Professional Development Day

THANK YOU, DEACON LARRY KOEBEL! Deacon Larry Koebel has been officially retired as a deacon serving our diocese, but has graciously served here at St. Matthew, his home parish, for the last few years. Due to growing challenges with physical and health issues, he will be "retiring" from his diaconal ministry here at the end of August. We are grateful for the many gifts he shared with us in ministry and for his selfless service. We are happy that we will continue seeing Deacon Larry around the parish even if it means he's sitting in the pews with his wife Laura.

SAINT MATTHEW CHARITABLE WORKS COLLECTION is this weekend, August 24-25, after all Masses. Your kindness is appreciated.

IN-HOME EMHC NEEDED – We are in need of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to minister to the homebound on Sundays. Recently, two assisted living facilities have opened in our parish area, which has put a strain on our existing InHome EMHC, requiring the need for additional EMHC. If you are interested or want to learn more, contact Max Maksimoski at [email protected].

This effort is very important as we move forward with the mission and vision of our parish. We, as a parish family, have changed so many lives in our community over the last 60 years! In order to continue our mission and ministries, we encourage all parishioners to spend time in prayer and discussion with your family reflecting on the work we do. We look forward to seeing all of our parishioners at Mass, especially during our special Commitment Weekend, September 14-15. WALKING WITH PURPOSE THIS FALL AT ST. MATTHEW THE APOSTLE

Do you desire to grow in your Catholic faith? Would you like to connect with other women in our parish community? Are you searching for something more in your life? We invite you to consider joining Walking with Purpose, a women’s Catholic Bible Study, this fall at St. Matthew. Weekly group sessions are starting on Wednesday, September 11 at 9:15 a.m. or Thursday, September 12 at 7:00 p.m.We are offering several study options this year! Opening Your Heart, our foundational study, is designed for a woman new to WWP, whether or not you have any Bible Study experience; you are welcome as you are to learn how the Scriptures apply to our everyday lives. Touching the Divine is a study of the Gospel of John and designed for women who have already participated in WWP and are ready for a more advanced level study as we learn how to know Christ in a deeper, more intimate way. We are also offering Beholding His Glory and Beholding Your King, which are two shorter studies. The mission of Walking with Purpose is to help every Catholic woman and girl in America to open her heart to Jesus Christ. Are you interested in learning more? Please check out our website at stmatthew.net/wwp. There you will find descriptions of each of the studies, frequently asked questions about WWP, and a registration form. If you have questions, please contact Gina Sergio at [email protected] or 614-806-4356. We hope to see you!

CALL TO COME HOME – If you’ve been away from the Church, are drifting away, feel confused, hurt or angry, have questions or concerns, this is an invitation to talk with us. Please contact Pat Martin at [email protected].

NURSERY HELP NEEDED – The Parish Nursery is in need of adult and student volunteers to staff the Nursery during each weekend Mass. Volunteers are typically scheduled once a month and we can work around your schedule. We are currently looking for adults for the 8:00 a.m. and both 5:00 p.m. time slots, and student helpers for each Mass time. Please contact Maria Ohalek at [email protected] for more information or if you are able to help.

CLERGY ABUSE CRISIS RESOURCE – Copies of Bishop Robert Barron’s pastoral letter “Letter to a Suffering Church” are available in the Parish Office. Bishop Barron speaks from the heart and urges us to “stand and fight” for the Church.

PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN SAFE ENVIRONMENT SEMINAR The Diocesan Safe Environment Compliance program requires that for an adult to interact with minors at the school/church, he/she must meet three requirements: attend a Protecting God’s Children class; have a background check performed and complete the code of conduct (attached to the volunteer application). The next Protecting God's Children class that St. Matthew will be hosting is Wednesday, September 18 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. in the St. Anthony Room. As a convenience, Fast Fingerprints (a third party) will be on-site from 5:00-6:00 p.m. to do background checks before the class starts. The background checks will stop once the class starts, so if you want to have your background check done that day, please plan to come early. The line can get pretty long. If you have already taken the PGC class and just need to have the fingerprinting done, please feel free to come to just the background check part. To register for the class, please visit https://www.stmatthew.net/protecting-gods-children.

TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 25, 2019

BISHOP ROBERT BARRON’S PIVOTAL PLAYERS – ST. AUGUSTINE AND ST. BENEDICT ARE

COMING TO ST. MATTHEW! (FREE EVENT!)CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players is a multi-part series that illumines a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church, but changed the course of western civilization. This video focuses on two incredible saints from the fourth and fifth centuries: St. Augustine of Hippo and St. Benedict of Nursia.St. Augustine, the Teacher, is possibly the best example of how faith in Christ changed a person. Augustine’s narrative of personal transformation in his book Confessions provides a template for life in Christ that still rings true today. Many would argue that St. Benedict, the Monk, contributed more to saving western Christian culture than anyone else. Born just after Rome fell, Benedict founded the religious community that would, in time, preserve the best of the old and allow for the emergence of an authentic, Christian way of life.Join Bishop Barron as he traces the lives and contributions of these two pivotal saints.

ST. AUGUSTINE VIDEO: • Tuesday, September 3, 10:00-11:30 a.m., St. Anthony RoomST. BENEDICT VIDEO: • Tuesday, September 10, 10:30-11:30 a.m., St. Anthony RoomAll viewings are free of charge. No need to register. Please bring a friend! Questions? Contact Lorraine Curtin at [email protected] or 614-946-7585.

LOOKING FOR A LITURGICAL MINISTRY? Mass sacristans are needed for the 5:00 p.m. Saturday and 12:00 p.m. Sunday Masses. Sacristans are scheduled approximately once a month. Responsibilities include preparation of the sacred vessels for Holy Mass and cleaning up afterwards. Training will be provided. To volunteer, please contact Vicki Wengert at [email protected].

USHERS NEEDED! St. Matthew is in need of more ushers for certain Masses. It is time for our community to embrace the gifts we’ve been given and we can’t wait to see how God provides for these specific needs. Please contact Jenna Zins at [email protected] or 614-471-0212 for more information or to contribute.

ST. MATTHEW CHURCH GAHANNA, OHIO

AROUND THE DIOCESE

PROPOSALS TO REDUCE GUN VIOLENCE, INCREASE MENTAL HEALTH PREVENTION, TREATMENT – Ohio Governor Mike DeWine recently announced a series of legislative reforms to address gun violence and outlined further action to increase mental health prevention, identification, and treatment to better protect Ohioans. “Gun violence doesn’t just take the form of mass shootings, people are victims every day in Ohio and across the country,” said Governor DeWine. “I believe that this is both a public safety issue and an individual wellness issue – we must address both sides to help solve the problem. It’s time to do something, and that is exactly what we are going to do.” This series of solid, workable reforms will help get guns out of the hands of people who should not have them under the law while protecting the rights of law-abiding citizens who are entitled to the right to bear arms and will help prevent and treat those struggling with mental illness. For more information on Governor DeWine’s proposals, visit https://governor.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/governor/media/news-and-media/20190806.

PARISH PROJECTSAs good stewards of your generosity, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide regular updates on St. Matthew campus projects, improvements, ongoing initiatives, and enhancements. We would like to thank those who were able to visit the new Parish Cafeteria last weekend. The final construction punch lists have been completed and this project has now been turned over to the parish to utilize and enjoy for many years to come. Your continued support of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal is greatly appreciated to help replace funds borrowed from the Diocese to finish the project. We had planned to complete the kitchen in two phases but were required to do the entire renovation to meet all current health, safety and building requirements. Again, we thank you for your continued support.School is back in session. Your Facilities Team continues to address the expected start-up issues after the summer break. As those issues are addressed, we are committing additional time and effort to the Church in preparation of our 60th Anniversary as a parish. We will be celebrating with a special Mass with Bishop Brennan and a parish picnic.Additional lighting has been added to the Apse area behind the altar to better highlight the angel murals and wall enhancements. Work continues on the latticework murals. We are hoping to install the lower latticework panels in September. We appreciate this opportunity to provide these updates and welcome suggestions for facility enhancements. Please contact George Harvey at [email protected].
