COMMUNITY MINISTRIES NEWS

Foundation Communities Open House Scheduled Sept. 10As Austin wrestles with the availability of affordable housing, two complexes in the Oak Hill area are prime examples of affordable housing at its best. Live Oak and Southwest Trails are complexes of Foundation Communities. In addition to housing, Foundation Communities offers support services that help their families succeed. If you would like to learn more about these communities and our neighbors who live there, you are invited to attend an Open House on Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. You’ll be treated to a complimentary light lunch, hear from Foundation Communities administrators and residents about their program, and have an opportunity to tour an apartment. There will be no request for financial assistance.

Interested? Contact Vicki Matustik at [email protected] or visit the Connection Station located in the courtyard on Sunday mornings to sign up. We have 30 seats, so respond soon if interested.

Palm Elementary/Oak Hill UMC Partnership OpportunitiesOak Hill UMC has approached Palm Elementary School about sending church members into the school to assist faculty and staff with projects throughout the year.

Move-in/Set-up for teachersPalm has invited five or six volunteers to visit Palm on Aug. 16 from 9 a.m.-noon to assist teachers as they ready their classrooms to welcome students. Assigned tasks might include activities such as putting supplies in order, helping to move furnishings, setting up bulletin boards, etc. The teacher will outline work needed. One time event. No ISD background check required.Fall Festival assistantsPalm has invited up to 12 volunteers to assist the school as it celebrates its Fall Festival. Duties include helping to take up tickets and pass out prepared food and drinks, working a class “booth” such as a cake walk, or craft activities for a short period of time to provide teachers an opportunity to enjoy the festival. Tentative date for the festival is Friday, Nov. 15. No ISD background check required. Time consideration approximately 5-9 p.m.

Track and Field Day assistants Palm has invited 5-10 volunteers to visit Palm on Track and Field Day to serve as helpers at the field events for children. Responsibili-ties might include running stop watches to time events, setting up a course, or assisting teachers or students as needed. Time consider-ation – morning 8-11:30 or afternoon 12:30-3. The date is April 16 or 17.

Skills championsPalm has invited two or three volunteers to consider visiting the campus weekly or at least twice monthly to read and work on reading readiness skills with pre-K and kindergarten students who might benefit from some one-on-one assistance. Teachers will provide the volunteers with the exercise they are to lead or book they are to read with the student or students. We are seeking volunteers who would make a commitment to this at least through the fall semester; hopefully through the entire year. Time consideration approximately 1.5 hours weekly or every other week.

BuddiesPalm has invited two or three volunteers to visit the campus weekly to touch base with students deemed at risk or having behavioral issues in the classroom. The buddies would likely do something together to give the student a chance to bond with the adult buddy and take a break from the activities of the classroom for a short period. Training will be provided by the school. Time consideration approxi-mately one hour weekly.Interested?Interested volunteers should visit the Connection Station on Sundays. Vicki Matustik ([email protected]) can answer questions. Sign-up sheets will be available in the Connection Station. School Principal Ms. Rhonda Coleman has offered to give volunteers awelcome and brief tour of the school so that volunteers are familiar with the school set-up.

An Austin ISD-sponsored background check is required for volunteers working one-on-one with students in the Skills champions and Buddies programs. Other larger group activities will not require a background check; however, Oak Hill UMC honors Safe Gatherings and requires that all volunteers complete the Rio Texas Conference-sponsored Safe Gatherings certification.

A Message from Gwenivere Ward“I want to thank all who helped me with my Silver Award Project. Because of your generous donations, the individuals who helped sew the bags, and my Sunday school group who helped stuff the bags, we were able to give to the Rainbow Room about 70 sewn “Grab and Go Bags” of which 56 were stuffed with a change of clothing, pajamas, toiletry kit, and a small blanket. The “Grab and Go Bags” looked so nice. I hope the children enjoy the bags. I would love to do this again next year.”

— Gwenivere Ward

(Above) Youth from Oak Hill UMC helped stuff the “Grab and Go Bags” destined for the Child Protective Services’ Rainbow Room. Thanks for helping!
