We dedicate
this book,
Memoryku
to
Andrew Clements, who really got us thinking about haikus,
All people who like Japanese poetry and
Ms. Payne
because
she was there for the haikus and artwork,
if we’re stuck on something, she helps us think of ideas,
she lets us have ongoing studies which involves making choices about what we want to learn, like reading silently or working with partners or small
groups,
and
She is always there for us!
Process Page
We read Dogku by Andrew Clements and we thought it would be cool to write our own haikus. A haiku is a special Japanese type of poetry where you write 5 syllables on one line, then the next line has 7 syllables, then the last line has 5 syllables. One haiku only has 3 lines but we decided to write a series of haikus to tell a story. We made a list of our Favorite Memories and our Worst Memories and picked one memory to write about in haiku. After we wrote our haikus we conferenced with buddies to make sure our poems made sense, had the right number of syllables, and used descriptive words. We discovered that it was important for the first line of our poem to grab the reader’s attention and make them want to read more. We made many drafts of our haikus to make sure we got them just the way we wanted them. It was also hard to fit what we wanted to say into only 5, 7, or 5 syllables.
We drew self-‐portraits with Mary Lou. After we drew our self-‐portraits we made collages with scraps of cut paper. Starting with our head, we worked down until we got to the feet. Then we glued the cut paper self-‐portrait onto a piece of colored paper as a background. One of the hardest parts was making our eyes and making our clothes the right size to fit our heads.
The Nervous Kid
It is so creepy You do not want to come on
You will scream so loud
Pompeii was so fun Burning fire around me Statues falling around me
Pompeii was a town
Destroyed by a volcano Just a ride for me
I felt nervous
Pitch black, huge boom like thunder Then comes a water hill
Threw my hands up high Wasn’t nervous anymore
That ride was so fun

Space Mountain
Dark in the building My heart beating fast
It is my turn now
It jerked me so hard Big brown eyes got enormous
Stars are in the sky
Fast as a cheetah It did a flip in the air Screaming very loud
We go to slow down
I turn facing up a hill We go down the hill
Start to see planets
Are very different looking One is red and blue
I felt very weird
Was going side to side The ride is over
Birds were in my head
I do not know what happened I went down the steps
By Austin Bowen
Snakeku
Days with rolling balls
My mother calls me inside
Something about snakes
New snake coming soon
I am very excited
Long days pass by
Very long thinking
The clocks go tick-tock, tick-tock
Longest day ever
Today was so long
Long waiting for a pet snake
Slithering snake time
In their house, I’m here.
The neighbor is very friendly
6:00, it’s time
She slithers around
Frederica loves dead mice
She strikes her mouse
This is a good time
This is the day, after months
This is a good time
Walking across the yard
through the door. Up the tall stairs.
Into my small room.
Putting her down here
She slithered around her tank
She likes to slither

My Very Own Haiku
It is my birthday
Finally the time has come Family has come
A pile of cards
Chatting, yelling, and talking I am excited
What is the one there?
It is a remote-controlled plane What is the next one?
It is gigantic!
It’s an aircraft carrier! It goes with my plane.
Next year is too far
It is time to go to bed Then I say goodnight

Butterfly
Wind brings wings to sky Cobweb glides brushing my hand
My wings at last rest
A tiny peach ledge Bitter water in my palm
My wings at last rest
My heat fades away I forget all but my drink
Eating to stay alive
Fluttering, not flight My black-striped glides can now sleep
The creature lifts wings
Nectar in my hand Fluttering, still not in air
Not moving foot
I try to free him He does not budge a glider
Can he now be dead?
By Charlotte Clements

Touchdown
Running down the field “Make a touchdown!” yells my dad dodging the defense Defense got angry Thirty-yard touchdown is mine My dad was so proud The bench was boring Time for the defense to go on I’m off the bench Now I’m on the grass I look at the quarterback He looks at me back Sadiq got the ball Look, we tricked the other team Sadiq ran the yards Sadiq spins, jooks, jumps Whole team danced around the field He made the touchdown By Mekhi Brown
Rollercoasterku
Fresh air in the sky Whoosh! Going down fast
Wow, the ride is done
Let’s take a long break Time to ride another one
Oh yes, this is it!
Every one in line Waiting very patiently
Finally we’re here
Let’s sit down right now Time to buckle our seat belts
Started moving fast
We got to the top But on dad’s watch it was six
It was time to go
I was very sad I whined but it did not work
So we had to go
We got in the car Then drove all the way back home

Tea Party
I lay out blanket. Pass out little fat tea cups. Can feel the smooth cup.
Pour tea into cups.
Fuzzy adorable pets. Sipping fresh fake tea.
We play tea so long
Golden cups that go cling, cling. Great tea party a?
Sit and sip with pets.
Finally tea party ends. No more tea party.
But of course again,
The tea party comes and goes, Goodbye tea party.
I had so much fun
With my cute little stuffies. Again, tea party!

Stair Accident
I was on my dad’s back. We started down the hard stairs.
And we tripped on down.
We were tumbling. Down, down, down scared as could be.
I started to cry.
We are half way down. My head hurts badly.
My stomach hurts bad.
We are at the end. My dad says “Are you okay?”
“No daddy, I’m not”.
We start to the couch. It is very hard to walk.
Mom gets some icepacks.
Cold ice on my leg. I tell my mom it hurts bad.
She rubs it lightly.

Great Wolf Lodge
I love great wolf lodge, Because of its water slides,
The water feels great,
I stay there so long, So I go back to my room,
I dry off and change,
I get my game wand, Go down stairs to the lobby,
I can play at last,
I zap my fat wand, I play so long I don’t care,
Go back to my room,
10:00 at last! I go to sleep that was fun,
I’ll do it again,
I wake up early, Make my bed, get dressed and go,
I’ll never forget!

We saw a tiger It had black and orange stripes

But it was ok
We ate a good lunch It was almost over, sad We see one more thing
