STCW 2010 Amendments

Major revisions to the STCW Convention and its associated Code were adopted by IMO in Manila in June 2010

to ensure that the necessary global standards will be in place to train and certify seafarers to operate technologically advanced vessels

The amendments entered into force on 1 January 2012, bringing the Convention and Code up to date and enabling them to address issues that are anticipated to emerge in the foreseeable future

STCW 2010 Amendments

Amongst the amendments adopted, there are a number of important changes to each chapter of the Convention and Code, including new training requirements relating to:

Modern technology (e.g. ECDIS)

Leadership, management and teamwork

Security, including piracy awareness

Marine environment awareness

OFSTED Audit

An audit of our professional short course provision was carried out in December 2011 by OFSTED, the UK government’s auditing body for education and skills.

The formal report was published on 18 January 2012 and key findings were as follows:

WSA and the Professional Yachting Association (PYA) are setting the standard for interior training, providing the tools and recognised certification for career progression within the interior department.

Over 30 years of operating expertise integrated with an understanding of industry’s needs to deliver world‐leading facilities and programmes

In addition to the teaching block and workshop facilities, the 10 acre lake has a number of key design features:

range of fixed and floating berth options (19 jetties)

straight and curved canal sections

narrow and buoyed channels

critical bends and swinging basins

Lake depth is maintained at 0.9 metres in the canal sections and some harbour areas for demonstration of shallow water effects on ship handling


A range of scaled ship models with realistic manoeuvring characteristics are used to develop:

proficient ship handling skills

understanding of the behaviour/handling of various vessel types

effective ship handling planning

A variety of port scenarios, canal transits and berthing operations can be simulated using ship models, tugs, berths, basins and channels

Emphasis is placed on slow speed control in port areas and coastal waters (e.g. berthing, buoyed channels, canal transits) where incidents can have greatest adverse impact.

Meeting the high standards expected by owners, employers and maritime regulators requires continuing professional development (CPD).

Our CPD management courses address the challenges of working in multi‐cultural environments, with a focus on leadership and teamwork, communication, problem analysis and solution delivery etc.

These skills are honed progressively, recognising and encouraging best practice as part of the lifelong learning required of all competent seafarers.

Also included in this section are RYA accredited courses in the use of superyacht watercraft including Powerboats and Jet Skis, the latter a statutory requirement for superyachts in the Mediterranean.

Owners have the ultimate choice of where to register their vessel, with a variety of options open to them depending on personal, technical and financial preferences.

In the past yachts were usually registered with the owner’s nation state but 'flags of convenience' are often used today for financial, tax or administration purposes.

A number of quality ‘flag state’ alternatives are available, with one of the most popular being the UK’s Red Ensign (along with Red Ensign Group members such as Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Gibraltar and Isle of Man) while other registries include France, Greece, Italy, USA etc.
